  1. My exams are next year and I'm looking at Universities. I currently study: FRENCH B HL ENGLISH LANG AND LIT HL ECONOMICS HL NATURE OF SCIENCE SL MATHS STUDIES SL GERMAN SL I want to study French at university and am thinking about going to study in France. However, I am not sure if I would be taught in English as an International student or taught in French with other natives... I also want to study German alongside the french; does anyone know any good universities to study two languages in France???? This summer, I also would like to go visit some universities there in France, would they allow me to look around or would I need to wait for an Open Day?
  2. This is what I used to review the material on the digestive system, nutrition and the liver. The document is in french.
  3. As of right now I am still midway of MYP year 5 (which is the last year of MYP) and so for me, DP will still start next school year (summer of this year) but we did already choose our DP subjects. So as for my second language, I decided to choose French ab initio (which I have no prior knowledge on) and I kinda just wanted to start learning the language so I kinda get a head start and so it will make it a bit easier for me next year. Therefore, I just wanted to ask you guys how I should start studying French (e.g. do you recommend me to learn through language-learning platforms, through textbooks, videos, etc and if so, if you can, name specific resources). I actually had started using Duolingo recently (currently lvl 8 ) but I read from somewhere that its content is a bit irrelevant to the IB's syllabus. So what do you guys recommend me to do? Thanks in advance!
  4. I understand that with words of quantity like 'beaucoup de', the 'de' stays the same. But I'm confused as to when I should write just 'de' or 'du/de la/de l'/des', if I have a phrase like "[noun] de/du/de la/de l'/des [noun]". For example: Le chat des enfants. Le chat de l' enfant. versus Mon mode de vie. Une épidémie d' obésité.

Language B EE - viva voce

Hey there, So basically I've done a French B EE and my school wants to conduct the viva voces but they do not know what language I have to conduct my viva voce in as I am the first ever student to do a Language B EE. Would anybody happen to know if I have to do it in French (the language of my EE) or in English (the language my exams will be conducted in)? As you can see, I'm in a bit of a sticky situation and would REALLY appreciate some help. Thanks in advance!
  6. My school offers 3 different Language B subjects: Indonesian Acquisition, Chinese Acquisition, and French ab Initio. Out of these 3 languages, I am only fluent in Indonesian since it's my native language, however, due to this, there's some policy restricting me from choosing it, leaving me with Chinese Acq & French ab Initio. With no prior knowledge at all regarding these two languages, I decided to choose French since it's in an Initio. With that in mind, will French ab Initio be difficult and is it a time consuming subject when it comes to revisions?
  7. I am moving to a new IB school in Canada during the middle of ninth grade. In my old school I did Advanced Algebra 2 in 9th grade. Do they have an option of continuing on that path or do I have to start at algebra 1? I also was doing French 2 at that school. Can I countinue that?
  8. Does anyone have any tips for the interactive/group oral (oral intéractif) in French B HL? I couldn't really find anything online for it.
  9. Dear All, Hope you're all doing? Could somebody guide me since when is this taking into effect? My latest batch started school year in Aug 2018, so will they be appearing for IB exams in this same format in 2020? Please help! Thank You in advance
  10. Hi everyone, I got my IB results today and i did not pass sadly. However, history is my 7th subject and if I switch it with my 6th subject which is French I would pass. Im just wondering if its a thing that could be done so that history would be on my actual diploma and French be the additional subject. Thank you guys in advance

    Glendon BA at York

hey guys, so I was checking course enrollment and the degree requirement/ "anatomy of a glendon BA" manual at York and it mentioned a "bilingual requirement"? does this mean that french is mandatory? If so, my ab initio level isn't going to help me much 😕
  12. Hello, I am about to submit my final draft of my French B written assignment. My word count is currently 418 (SL word count is 300-400), which means I am over the word limit by 18 words. I told this to my teacher at school, but she says I shouldn't worry about it. Which is why I was wondering whether going over the word limit by a bit is really okay like my teacher says or will this result in a one/two mark penalty? I have been avoiding the submission process as I am worried (I don't want to lose a mark for something as dumb as this)
  13. Hey there, I've finally decided on doing an Extended Essay in French (Language B) and have set my heart on looking at the following works: - 'L'Etranger' by Albert Camus (book) - 'Lacombe, Lucien' by Louis Malle (film) But I just need a little help in narrowing down my focus and would really appreciate some help from you guys. So far, I've come up with the following: - Comparing the characters of Lucien and Meursault (first I will carry out a character analysis of the 2 characters and then compare these analyses) - Proving that 'Lacombe, Lucien' is an absurdist work (first I will look into the features/characteristics of absurdist works and then find evidence within the film that supports my argument) I'd just like to know your thoughts on the above and whether I can even do the above in my EE! Thank you
  14. Hey there, Let me just cut to the chase - I have my EE proposal due within this week and I have a rough idea of what I want to do However, at the moment, it's a very general idea and therefore it's not very clear/focused so I was hoping I could get some help from you guys! Since I'm doing a Language B EE (in French), I naturally selected a novel to look into which in this case is 'Les Belles Images' by Simone de Beauvoir. Now something my supervisor and I came up with was to compare feminist literature in Europe with feminist literature in Asia, around about the same time (40's to 60's). My question is can I simply compare the 2 novels or would that no longer be a Language B EE? Or should I simply look into an aspect of the French book itself? If you guys have read the book or have any ideas as to what I can do - you don't need to tell me the an idea word for word, but I would just like a direction - I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks again
  15. Hi, I'm on the fence about a few of my IB courses. I want to major in Psychology and attend an Ivy League Law school after I graduate. I wanted to do History but our school, unfortunately, doesn't offer it. I'm currently in grade 10 Chemistry and have an A-plus; moreover, I'll be doing grade 10 Biology next semester. Apart from the fact that I like Biology, I believe that taking that course will make me appear to be a more well-rounded student who is good at both sciences and social sciences. I've never taken Psychology or Business classes before; however, I'm interested in them, especially Psychology. Option 1: HL: English, Psychology, Biology SL: French, Math, Business and Management Option 2: HL: English, Psychology, Business and Management SL: French, Math, Environmental Systems and Societies Option 3: HL: English, Psychology, Business and Management SL: French, Math, Biology
  16. Hey Guys! I'm new to this whole forum thing so please bear with me. So a few of my classmates and I are enrolled in the Pamoja French ab initio course although, we seem to be having a few problems with our teacher. Firstly, no matter what we do none of my classmates, nor I, can please our teacher when it comes to assignments. We have tried everything including sticking as close to the rubric as possible and even going so far as to create our own study group with native speakers to try and learn as much grammar as we can to add to our written assignments but even if we use advanced grammar we still get 70s and 80s. Here's the real kicker, we were quite suspect about our teacher's grading habits and so, to test this, we had a native speaker write a short assignment for one of my classmates to have graded. We made sure they kept to the rubric and did everything that was asked. When that person got the assignment back the score, as usual, was 80%. The feedback as well was ridiculous, the teacher was saying that the grammar wasn't good enough and pointed out mistakes that were correct. Keep in mind this is work from an A1 French student. Secondly, orals are another source of stress for us. Firstly, for one oral that we had to take time out of school for, the teacher canceled after we were waiting for ten minutes then rescheduled with a ludicrous time none of us could make and when we tried to explain we couldn't do it then since we had prior commitments he simply said, "Well too bad, you shouldn't have missed the practice." We still don't know how we are going to be scored for it since orals are a graded assignment. Also, we took all both problems with our Pamoja advisory teacher who said he couldn't really do anything. If anyone else is doing or has done the Pamoja course and has any advice or tips that would be fantastic. Also, feel free to comment as my classmates and I could use all the help and information we can get. Thanks all!

  19. Hi, I am currently in my first year of IB, I moved to France with no experience of the French language. I am currently doing French B and my teacher suggested French Initio, would this be a good option considering I don't know French?
  20. Dear students, How hard was french B SL? Did you sometimes find yourself staring at your comprehensions not understanding a word? In my school, it's extremely hard (even at SL). Is it really very hard? Thank you!!
  21. I started writing my EE for the French B topic field. It is about French, written in English. Myself, my supervisor and even the IB coordinator do not know if this is acceptable, so a yes or no answer as to whether I can do this or not is appreciated from someone who has done this or knows more about restrictions around second language (language B) Extended Essays, thanks.
  22. Hey. I just started year 1 of IB, and not knowing what I was getting into, I chose French B SL. Now I don't know about any of your schools, but at mine, the French 10 teacher I was placed with was really really bad. They didn't prepare me or anybody in the class at all for this class, and now I'm completely lost. My teacher speaks maybe one or two English sentences per class, and teaches almost entirely in French. I don't understand what he's saying or what he's telling us to do at all. I understand that IB was going to be extremely hard, but I was prepared for the other subjects. The only subject that's actually scaring me right now is French.

  24. Hey everyone, I'm writing this as my school does not allow me to take my first language (French) as a B language while all other subject classes for B languages contain native speaker in them. to give a bit more informations I was born in France where I stayed and studied until Year 2 when I then moved away. From there I studied in a bilingual system where half my classes where un French and the other half in English, this lasted until Year 6. From there I completely stopped French and moved to a full English school where I once again did not study French. Last year I then joined the native French class to improve my French which with time has gone down hill. I did not even sit the GCSE exam due to my level being too low for it (getting Ds). Now my school allows Mandarin students who took native classes and pass successfully with great results to take B Mandarin while I can't do French? Only my speaking is better than other students while my writing is at an awful state and needs a lot of work even for B level. do you think I should be allowed to take French B?
