  1. My exams are next year and I'm looking at Universities. I currently study: FRENCH B HL ENGLISH LANG AND LIT HL ECONOMICS HL NATURE OF SCIENCE SL MATHS STUDIES SL GERMAN SL I want to study French at university and am thinking about going to study in France. However, I am not sure if I would be taught in English as an International student or taught in French with other natives... I also want to study German alongside the french; does anyone know any good universities to study two languages in France???? This summer, I also would like to go visit some universities there in France, would they allow me to look around or would I need to wait for an Open Day?
  2. If you are a native German speaker (preferably one that is May or November 2018), could you please message me to indicate interest in being a penpal, before the Language B exams. Danke.

    German IOP

I'm having my IOP's in German soon. We looked at the Books Jakob der Lügner, Homo Faber and Das Parfüm. We also watched the films. Generally speaking does any of you have any recommendation what to do if we have to analyze and compare two works? What specific aspect would you look at?
  4. hello guys.I'm really confused [among French, Spanish and German] to take one of these up as my foreign language. French is considered to be common these days, but I want to know which language will benefit me the most in airlines management courses.. so please can you help me out?
  5. I have to write a written task in German A Language and Literature. I decided to defend the bavarian dialect, based on an opinion piece offending this dialect. By sticking to the third or fourth question (How and why is a social group represented in a particular way? Or. Which social groups are marginalized, excluded or silenced within the text?). But since I am bavarian myself, I am unnerved by the possibility of my piece being an opinion piece, since it could sound like I'm defending my culture, which I will indirectly do. However, if I use concrete evidence to back up my claims, would it be a good idea? Or is the risk of me missing the point of the actual topic too high? Thank you.
  6. Hi guys, These are some very useful tools for learning a language. They provide you with all sorts of help related to translation (obv ) proof reading, grammar, examples, and usages. - www.Wordreference.com as many of you may know is a dictionary for many languages and often gives you a few example sentences and basic facts (masc. feminine, noun, etc.) - www.linguee.com is a great website if you come across a word and want to find other forms it's used in. It basically finds real-life websites/articles/etc. that use a word in 2 languages (e.g. English and French) It also has a basic dictionary and works in many languages. - www.Bonpatron.com is great for proof-reading your work, it checks your grammar, articles at the beginning of a noun, etc. However, it's only limited to French. - www.conjugation-fr.com is great for conjugating a verb in French. It provides dozens of various tenses (some of which are literary-level). It's an all tenses in 1 place. Hope it helps
  7. Hi, all! At my school, we're having IB course selections and I would really appreciate some input. English Literature HL (I’m really good at English and really enjoy it!) Psychology HL (I’ve always been interested in psychology) Biology HL - Chemistry HL German ab Initio SL (Excited for this course) Math SL (I’ve always been horrible at math. I don’t want to do math studies.) If not, what can I change? Let me know what you think!
  8. hey everyone so, im panicking a little, because we had our interactive oral in my last german class, and now we're meant to write a reflective statement... but I have no idea how? Do i just write 'I thought this' and 'i realised that', is there meant to be any introduction or summary of the book or personal thoughts?? Im so confused! our teacher just said to write about what we learned about the culture and the time in our discussion, but we didn't really discuss that at all, more of the charakter traits etc. I mean i can write about the time as well its just that that will have nothing to do with what we discussed.... I really don't understand what she expects from us!! Does anybody know what the rough format is meant to be? Thank you so so so much in advance!
  9. Hi guys, I currently have a 6 from German B SL. My Paper 2's are usually moving around 20 to 22 points out of 25, so basically a 6, however my huge weakness is the Paper 1, which I sometimes even get a 4 on. I have a question. I cannot seem to understand how I can prepare or improve my skills in the Paper 1's, do you guys have any special techniques or any tips? My MYP German teacher was completely useless and I feel I am catching up everything in these two years. I am graduating soon, so any feedback would be appreacited. By the way, I have a lot of vocabulary papers, concerning Grammar as well. Thanks for your help, any feedback or help appreciated.
  10. Hello, nice to meet you; I'm very new here, so please forgive me if I'm a little weird/rough around the edges lol. However, the main thing is that right now I'm quite conflicted. I'm a British student currenty in Year 11, going to an IB sixth form in 2017, and I have had a massive dilemma for the last few months. I want to do Computer Science at university, or at least a STEM subject to be broader, and my current choices are: SL Literature and Performance (as I like creativity, and Drama appeals to me more than normal English) HL Maths (daunting, I know, but for where I want to go I'm willing to take it on) HL Physics (to keep my options open rather than taking Computer Science, which would be a one-way route) A SL Humanity that I haven't decided yet as I hate them all I can't decide between them just yet. However, for my Language B and Group 6, I have 3 subjects I want to do, but only 2 spaces open to take them: German, which I've taken for 4-5 years now and have LOVED; Music, which I'm 'naturally gifted' for and have done all my life; and Japanese, a language that I'm absolutely fascinated in and have always loved, to the extent where I have tried studying some alone, despite not learning the language in school. The TL;DR of this text is that I can only choose 3 of the following combinations; HL German and SL Music, HL German and AI Japanese OR AI Japanese and HL Music, and I'm not sure which one would be the best in terms of enjoyment, doability and point-getting. There are points for and against each subject, which makes the overall decision process much harder. German is something I know I love and do well in, but I'm not too confident in getting a 7 at HL due to a low turnout of 7s in HL Language B in IB schools throughout my area. Furthermore, I've heard that many Germans speak fluent English, making the need for fluent German pretty unnecessary. Music is something I find relaxing and natural, but I've only been doing my grades for a year or two now (I'm Grade 4 piano right now, learning Grade 5), so the performance part of the syllabus is quite hard/scary for me (though I still believe getting a 7 in HL Music to be slightly easier than getting a 7 in HL German) and I can continue doing my grades without taking IB music lessons, meaning I won't close any doors by not taking it. Japanese is a subject I've wanted to take my entire life* and have made an effort to teach myself, which I find fun and interesting though I don't have the self-discipline to sustain self-study lmao. I already know hiragana, katakana and some very basic kanji from my time in Japan, so learning it shouldn't be impossible, but the problem is that I've never actually taken Japanese, hence the choice only being Ab Initio. I think I prefer Japanese, but should I really place it over Music and German, which I know how to do and know I love, on the hope that I'd like Japanese more than them? Honestly, I know that none of these subjects are particularly useful for my career path, but I LOVE creativity through logic, which is what attracts me to Computer Science, composition in Music and languages in general, meaning that I feel like I'll make the IB draining, boring or too stressful if I don't make the right choices. I've thought about this dilemma for ages and have made many past conclusions, but for some reason I can never seem to stick to an idea once I believe in it and always find myself back at square one. Please help me; I've been stressing about this so much, especially with my GCSEs still getting closer! (P.S. If it means anything again, I used to be conflicted between German, French and Music, but from everyone I asked in my school, people were overwhelming for Music and German. I've never asked about Japanese however, due to it only recently becoming a possible option, and Japanese and French are worlds different, so I'm not sure if this holds any value lol) * = (Not important but kind of a backstory, but I've originally always wanted to learn French and Japanese since I was little. When I first got into my secondary school however, I was placed into doing German without choice, as a compulsory GCSE choice for my form and I, which sucked at the time until I realised how much I enjoyed it lol. I was given a choice for my second language in Year 8 though, which I placed down as Japanese, but as there were insufficient numbers of pupils, Japanese as a class was cancelled and so I was placed in French, which saddened me A LOT back then. I've disliked and confused myself with French for as long as I can remember, but I've tried as hard as I could regardless because I thought it was an undeniably useful language in the working world. Now, I finally have the chance to take Japanese once more, but at the price of dropping German for it, which is a VERY hard choice to make...)
  11. Hello, so school started in August and when I received my schedule I noticed I was put into IB Spanish instead or IB German. I just went along with it for the last months, however my IB dean never informed me of why this change was made. Our grades were just finalized and I practically in my eyes failed with a 78, I feel like this is unfair because I haven't been learning Spanish for the last two years like everyone else leading the to all receive As. I know this sort of sounds like know that my grades are good I'm complaining, but I have been concerned about this since the first day of school. However, the Spanish teacher refuses to reteach a language for one student when there are 20+ other students who are ahead. What should I do about this?
  12. I'm on my second year of Ab initio German and I am struggling. My class last year was really relaxed and I have a different teacher this year that expects me as well as the German B students to be fluent in German. I get these crazy hard assignments when I can barely write a properly structured paragraph in German. I have extra textbooks and resources to help me but i'm nowhere near the level of the work my teacher gives. Any tips and advice please?
  13. Hi guys, I am writing my extended essay in german b. i have a topic and a structure ready but i do not know if it is going to be ok. A friend of my brother did an ee in german and got an E because of some strange reason. It was too much of the historical side and not the language/literature. In German B is the main thing they look for the language it is written in or the content? Could i for example write about a historical topic, but in german? i do not know if there is a difference between Language A and B EEs. My EE question translated is:" The Holocaust. Two survivors recall their stories: A comparison of two autobiographies set in auschwitz." In the essay i will do two book analyses and a comparison of the two. Is this a good path and is it a decent foundation to start writing on? (obv. ive read the books and done tons of notes) I am asking because my EE tutor is not answering her emails and im starting to run out of time. Thank you, The.plate
  14. Hello everyone I am thinking of writing my history IA on the aspects of WW1 that lead to the failure of the Weimar republic, but I feel like its not good enough, any ideas to refine it? Also any suggestions for good sources on this topic??
  15. Hey guys, So I started IB this year, my exams are in May 2017, and we got told about out Extended Essay yesterday in Assembly. We have a deadline to submit our Extended Essay forms at the start of February, so I really need to come up with an idea for it soon! I want to do my Extended Essay in Business, possibly on how I think technology is going to change certain industries over time, but I realise this is quite a broad topic and was wondering if you guys could help me narrow it down. P.S ~ I also was wondering if you think it would be insane if I did an Extended Essay in a foreign language (German) but based on a business topic such as the one above, or would that be a suicide mission? Thanks!!
  16. Hi! I'm choosing my subjects in 3 days and I just want to know what other IB students (with more experience) think about my plan. I want to take * Swedish LangLit A HL * English B HL * Business & Management HL * Math Studies / SL * Economics SL * Environmental Systems & Societies SL * German SL I don't know what I want to study after finishing IB but I'm sure it won't have anything to do with math/science. So I though that it might be a good idea to take Math Studies, and then add an extra language (German) to "compensate". The chancellor at my school told me it might be more useful to take an extra language if I don't want to study something requiring a higher math qualification at Uni. Also, German is not a language that many non-German people know these days, so it is probably something that will make my education "stand out". I want to study in the US. What do you think? Would you choose this, or rather take Math SL and skip German? Thanks!!
  17. Hello All! I hope exams are going well! Just wanted to open a topic about the German B exam (if anyone indeed takes this language!) How did everyone find the papers? I believe not all language B exams have been sat,so please refer to the exam discussion schedule to make sure your exam is allowed to be discussed!
  18. Hey does anyone have that paper?
  19. So, how did y'all find Paper 2? I believe it was TZ0 so we were all doing the same one. I chose #3 on Health. We did similar prompts to that in class, plus it's literally all you hear about in medical TV Then #6 (the argumentative portion) seemed to be a breeze! I was in separated classes in primary school so having some real-life experience probably helped me out for this. I feel like this one was definitely much easier than May '14's argument piece.
  20. Hi guys! I'm currently taking German B HL, and I wanted to share some useful verbs that are irregular/commonly used. SEIN - to be - PAST PARTICIPLE: sein gewesen - IMPERFEKT: war Ich bin Du bist Er/sie/es ist Wir sind Ihr seid Sie/sie sind HABEN - to have - PAST PARTICIPLE: haben gehabt - IMPERFEKT: hatte Ich habe Du hast Er/sie/es hat Wir haben Ihr habt Sie/sie haben LESEN - to read - PAST PARTICIPLE: haben gelesen - IMPERFEKT: las Ich lese Du liest Er/sie/es liest Wir lesen Ihr lest Sie/sie lesen LAUFEN - to run - PAST PARTICIPLE: sein gelaufen - IMPERFEKT: lief Ich laufe Du läufst Er/sie/es läuft Wir laufen Ihr lauft Sie/sie laufen As a GENERAL rule, most regular verb follow this pattern with the following endings: Ich -e Du -st Er/sie/es -t Wir -en Ihr -t Sie/sie -en Another good resource is a website I frequently used during my German experience: http://dict.leo.org/ This website has TONS of vocabulary, verb conjugations, and forums that definitely aid in the comprehension of the German language. Feel free to add more irregular verb conjugations or anything else you find useful below.
  21. I have looked everywhere and i can find most subject papers for may 2014 online somewhere! does anyone know where i could find German B HL paper 2? thanks
  22. Hey guys, yes... I know... another Pre-IB student asking for some advice on course selections So far I have chosen: German A Lit HL English A Lang&Lit SL Economics HL Biology HL Mathematics SL Geography SL To be quite frank, I absolutely loathe writing essays. It's not that I'm particularly bad at it, I just dislike writing in general. So here are my questions regarding this: -I've heard a fair amount of older students say that Eco HL is hell if you do not like writing essays. Is that true? -Secondly, I'm not quite sure which English course I want to pick yet: English Lit or Lang & Lit? Which one is more manageable in terms of workload/essays? Which one is more enjoyable? -Lastly, I haven't really decided on my sixth subject yet - I randomly chose Geo because I heard that it was quite easy going in terms of content and workload. What do you think? Would you suggest something else? Also, let's just say that I'm not always the most productive or organized student ... Is my subject combination manageable with a medium work-input? Don't get me wrong, I have a GPA close to a 7, but I'm pretty stressed out right now and plan to take things a little easier next year for my health. Thank you
  23. Im currently taking german B and finding it next to impossible (predicted a 3). i took german iGCSE foundation and got a C does that mean that i am not allowed to take it at ab initio? thanks
  24. Hey there, I've just started with IB and since we're quite a small school, it seems like I'm the only one to take German B HL. Therefore, the two extra HL classes will be one-to-one and as such can be individually adjusted (bearing the syllabus in mind, of course). So I just wanted to ask those of you who have more experience with B languages, preferably German, what to focus on during the two years so that the exam is a piece of cake in the end. I just don't want to miss anything that might be important... Thanks
  25. Short intro: 10th grader, planning on doing HL: Math, Physics, English A Course ; SL: German A LangLit, Economics, Chemistry My question: What exactly is the difference between the 'Literature' and the 'Language and Literature' courses? (Especially in English A). I understood that the 'Literature' course is very literature focused (and analysing, etc.) but then what exactly do you do in the language and literature course? I looked at the each syllabus but still did not quite understand what exactly the difference is... Thanks for replies
