  1. Hey Guys, I'm quite stuck on how to write my introduction for the extended essay. The thing is that now, since we don't need the abstract, I'm wondering what words I can use to link or relate the methods and content that will be discussed in the essay with the research question. My art supervisor somehow cannot access the think IB web therefore I don't have access to any guide or sample EE. Does anyone know or have a link to a recent arts Extended essay? Thnx Kind Regards AZ
  2. IA rough drafts are due within the next few days, so, being the procrastinator I am, I just started my rough draft this past week. This is my first time writing an IA and my first time writing a math Paper. My paper is over the probabilities of different autoimmune diseases and evaluating a possible connection between autoimmune diseases (if you have 1, are you more likely to have another?). I am in severe need of assistance, so here is my intro: "While considering my own interests and experiences I realized the probabilities of my own life and conditions. I have an number of autoimmune diseases: type 1 diabetes, Celiac Disease, and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. There is no one I have met who has these three diseases, as I do, so I began to wonder what the probability of possessing them is and if, perhaps, having one autoimmune disease makes an individual more susceptible to another." Any advice is appreciated! Thank you in advance!
  3. I was wondering if introduction for 300 words is enough or not. What do you think? Should I extend it?
  4. For the physic IA, what should the structure of the introduction be? I know that 1)the design & method,2) the theory& background, 3)Method and materials needs to be there. But what is the order of them all? and how detailed should the descriptions be?
  5. I have quite a ****ty EE supervisor and he keeps giving me conflicting comments about how things should be. Last time he told me that an introduction should provide a background context and just ease the reader into the essay; now he tells me that "our introduction needs to introduce your whole paper (state your research question, answer it and briefly summarise the points you will make to explain this answer)." That sounds more like an abstract to me and I'm not quite sure what to write for my introduction anymore (or my abstract, for that matter). Please give me some advice on what introductions should include. At the moment, it has background context and general conclusion of my EE but not my research question and the points that support my conclusion.
  6. Hey there fellows my extended Essay is on film. I have written the intro tho it is 3 pages long, 880 words and 6 references more less. Its just I tried to show knowledge and investigation on the topic but at the same time I couldnt pad it out. And these two criterion are kinda hard to reconcilliate... Is it too long for an intro? What about the references? Is 6 a lot? I tried not to talk on too much factual things, just the necessary for my thesis and "matrix". Could you briefly tell me whats important to have on an intro? I know this may seem useless, but I want to garner points on every single criterion. So yeah I started with the social cultural and histórical background, then talked about the director a bit and its relations with the topic... best regards, Richard
  7. Hey guys Im just confused on the structure of my IOP, is it written in a commentary style? Or can It be written in SSLS. Also any good tips for writing a good introduction for an IOP?? would appreciate the help.
  8. Version pdf

A comprehensive and quick review of the components required in the IA for highest possible marks for HL
  9. Hello peoples! I'm doing my Maths IA on the correlation between age and screentime, and I'm not quite sure what I should put into the introduction portion of the IA. How long should it be? I've written about a hundred words for it now, referencing people's ability to use technology, the relation of this to screen time, and the elderly's capabilities in the usage of technology which brings in the age aspect of my study. Would this kind of progression be acceptable? What else do I need? EDIT: Also, how do I add that "IA" flair that some posts have? Or does a mod have to do it?
  10. hello all, i started working on my TOK essay, since my teacher wants a first draft in 10 days (october 15). now i wrote an introduction, but i want some one to proof read it and tell me what needs improvement in it, since my TOK teacher refused to do that and hes not that good or that reliable anyways (hes new) im doing the first prescribed topic. “In gaining knowledge, each area of knowledge uses a network of ways of knowing.†Discuss this statement with reference to two areas of knowledge.“In gaining knowledge, each area of knowledge uses a network of ways of knowing.†Discuss this statement with reference to two areas of knowledge. my areas of knowledge are art and history, and my ways of knowing are emotion and sense perception if any one can help, please direct message me on here. thanks
  11. Hi there fellow IB students, For those doing english language and literature Higher Level, my main weakness is indeed the introduction for my paper 1! is there anyone out there who could offer me tips and tricks to a more structured introduction? Much appreciated!
  12. I need help with my introduction... I chose the second prescribed title : “There are only two ways in which humankind can produce knowledge: through passive observation or through active experiment.†To what extent do you agree with this statement? For what I have in my intro so far doesn't really specify specific areas of knowledge, because honestly I could talk about all of them. I'm not sure if I should... So the question is: should I pick a few specific AOKs to talk about or can I not specify/do a lot? THANK YOU SO Much guys!!
  13. Hello. My EE is under Psychology and my topic is on attachment and its contribution to the formation of relationships between people. I think that understanding attachment during childhood plays a crucial role in the formation of adult relationships. Thus, I was able to come up with this. I just finished writing my Introduction and I was hoping if you could give me constructive criticisms. Thank you.
  14. Hi, Is there any particular way to write the "reason for research question" section in the introduction part of the Extended Essay? because i'm having troubles writing it. Thanks.
  15. Hi, I was wondering if any of you guys could give me some advice about the introduction? my history ee is about colonization, and so my arguments go in chronological order of events where I give a quick summary of what is happening at the time of an event, then analyze it and move on to the next event. Do you think it's necessary to then give any major background info in the introduction?
  16. Hi everyone, So this is my first topic here. I am sorry if someone already asked the same question, but I couldn't find it anywere on this forum. Alright, I am writing my History IA now and I am working on an introduction in the analysis part (D). Is it alright if I include the title in the introduction? (My title is: To what extent was the Second Balkan War of 1913 a disaster for Austria?) Thanks!
  17. I am doing an extended essay in Biology, specifically microbiology. I am testing the effect of comercailly available disinfectants on 3 different bacteria growth. I want to start writing my introduction but I don't know where to start. What do I include in my introduction, and what would I include in my appendix? How do I format my introduction? Thank you in advance!
  18. Hey people, I need help to know what's the best structure of an Introduction for my EE! (To what extent can the international law control the child slavery/labor in Somalia?) Is it Ok to speak about the main problem internationally (child slavery) and then speak about the situation in Somalia for the kids before I start my EE?
  19. I just read the English subject report for May 2012 and one of the advice that the report gave was that candidates should not be encouraged to "write a template i.e where the introduction to the commentary briefly summarises the plot of the extract/poem and then outlines the range of literary features that which will be employed in the analysis". Our teacher had advised us to do exactly that. We have been penalised by doing any different. So my question really is what should be included in an introduction to a commentary and what should be included in the conclusion; I noticed they also mentioned 'thesis statements' for the introduction and I am wondering what that is and how I can employ that in my paper! Good Luck May 2013!
  20. Hello, I am done with my Introduction of IB Psychology HL except in this book I have, it asks "How did your ideas develop from the previous research and why was this considered to be an interesting area of investigation" What does this mean? I talked about 2 case studies (including the one I am replicating) and one theory in which those case studies support. So, what exactly am I supposed to say? Thank you, IB Kid in Need
  21. Hi everyone! I'm writing my Extended Essay in Visual Arts and my research question is: To what extent has Christian Dior influenced modern fashion designers? I'm looking at 4 different creations designed by Christian Dior and comparing them to several designs made by designers of the 21st century- so basically a big analysis and all that stuff. I'm going to eventually conclude that although Dior laid the foundation on which modern designers continue to build upon, he isn't the only influence seeing as there are numerous factors and inspirations which might have an impact on the designers today. I have been struggling to write my introduction and so after several weeks of failure I decided to leave it till the end, just before I write my abstract. Now that the deadline is coming up shortly, I need to wrap up my essay and my introduction is still missing. So I really need some advice from you guys if you would be kind enough to help!! I've tried to start it from different angles, but I don't know how to continue with each of them and go from there, you know, connect it to everything else in the essay. 1) starting with a quote, e.g. 2) starting with stating Christian Dior's reputation as one of the most authorative designers in the world and all that, e.g 3) starting with the reason why I'm writing this essay, so basically talking about how my own interest in Fashion Design as a possible career goal arises out of my passion for beauty and the way a female body is aesthetically dressed and what inspired me to write this essay on Christian Dior specifically - problem is I don't know how to a. word the whole thing, and b. tie it all together and connect it to the rest of the essay without making it look way to personal and narrative That's all that I have right now, so please please reponse with contructive advice and anything that would potentially help me! Again, as I said earlier, my deadline is coming up shortly, so please be quick! Thank you so so much in advance!!
  22. Hello, to all Ib survivors, Im writing my EE at the moment and I could use help. Now as im sure Im not the only one with this problem, I opened this topic to focus the students with problems writing. Ill start off this thread by posting my question: What is an effective way to "hook" the reader for my introduction? I know how to write, but the elusive snare that makes something worth reading has always passed me by. Any suggestions?
  23. Dear everyone, Am I the only one who is having trouble finding the supporting studies for their original research?? I couldn't find anything relevant to my study. I am doing Glanzer and Cunitz (1966) the primacy and recency effect on the free recall of the list of words. I am only doing one part of the experiment (only the recency effect, not the primacy). It is about the list of the words that people need to remember. One group of participants is doing maths problems after learning the words and then recalling and one is recalling the words immediately after they learned it. Results show that those doing math problems after, remember better the first words and less the last words from the list. Actually, I did find the researchers who did similar experiments but I can't find the method and findings of their experiments. Do you know any webpages or the ways I should search for them? DOES ANYONE KNOW ANY STUDY SIMILAR TO THIS ONE OR WITH SIMILAR RESULTS. Please help, I am going crazy. Thank you very much
