  1. How do you embed the knowledge framework in a TOK presentation? My KQ is: what role does language play in the acquisition of knowledge? The AOKs I am studying are the natural sciences, mathematics, and the human sciences. I already have links to personal and shared knowledge, and I explain how language is required for majority of the shared knowledge to be transmitted from one person to another. So what else should I include? My teacher said that my presentation will not score high marks because I have no links to the knowledge framework. Thanks!
  2. So, I have my final TOK Presentation this week and I was just wondering: what is the difference between a knowledge question and a knowledge issue? Or are they the same thing? My teacher never explained this to our class... 🙄
  3. I have my TOK presentation very soon, hence through a discussion with my supervisor, I came up with this knowledge question. This knowledge question seems to have depth, although It is quite hard for me to get my head around it. It would be great if someone helps me out here, who can talk me through some claims and counterclaims of this KQ. Thank You
  4. Okay, so my teacher expects me to know all of this just because I have had examples of my classmates, even though I was not here for the IB prep year (second in France). So can someone give me a way of making knowledge questions???
  5. I want to write a TOK presentation question about Human Error. I had something along the lines of: To what extent can human errors negate the theoretical backing of the natural sciences. My RLS was the Jeju-Daegu air korea plane crash - where the crew were negligent and forgot to read all 12 steps of the safety procedure plan - resulting in a crew miscommunication leading to the crash. What are some other questions related to human error? Is the scope of my TOK presentation a realistic one?
  6. How is this as a TOK knowledge question: "Is it ethical to criminalise expression of creativity?", to which my answer is: “Although it may be ethical and even necessary to criminalise art under certain circumstances, on the whole, it should be deemed unethical". I was wondering if it is necessary to reference the AOKs or WOKs in the question itself, or if I need to change the phrasing of my question. Other than that, I do think I have a very "TOKesque" question
  7. Hello there! I'm currently struggling with the tok essay , i chose the 5th prescribed tittle 'the best explanation is the simplest explanation' .since it is necessary for the maximum grade to have ''a sustained focus on knowledge questions connected to the prescribed title—developed with investigation of different perspectives and linked effectively to areas of knowledge and/or ways of knowing.'' this is not clear enough since i read reports about the tok essay that said many students didnt use knowledge questions properly , plus we dont have anyone that can help us with tok in the highschool ,if you know how to use them in the essay could you explain them please?
  8. Hello! I'll be doing my TOK OP soon and my teachers aren't very helpful.. so I was wondering if I could show you all my brainstorm here and if you guys could deduce if it is doable? To what extent is language a reliable way of knowing in the natural sciences? My RLS is: The Father of Genetics, Gregor Mendel, in 1865 presented his results in German, the language of the Austro-Hungarian Empire of which he was a citizen living in Brun now in the Czech Republic. Unfortunately, his work was not noticed by the rest of the world until it was rediscovered by American researchers in the early 1900s. Much to their credit, they attributed the discovery of Mendel's Laws to him. How much more would the Science of Genetics have progressed had Mendel's work been known by the rest of the world instead of just among the German speakers since 1865? I'm arguing whether language is a reliable WOK in the natural science and my stand is that it is not because of it's inherent flaw as a WOK (language is subjective, the ubiquity of languages makes it difficult for the AOK in natural science because natural science is an objective study and language is tethered to emotion, culture, etc.) There's also the issue of loss in translation. In my presentation, I'm planning to talk about how monolingualism is a solution to the issue of the unreliability of language in natural science (i.e. adopting a universal language in natural science, it's always been a thing. Today, it's English) and real life examples of this is the use of IUPAC. On top of this, the use of models, diagrams help to overcome the unreliability of language. The reason why people need to come up with ways to work around the flaw of language is because without language, scientists would not have access to earlier established and accepted theories which means they would all have to start from the very beginning, the very basic ideas in their science. My counter-argument is that in practice, this 'homogenous' attitude selected a very specific way of looking at the world (due to monolingualism), therefore one can make it easy to discount other types of information as nothing more than folklore. I'm arguing that knowledge that isn't produced via traditional academic research methods which commonly exists in other languages still have scientific value such as indigenous tribes in Indonesia who knew from oral histories how to recognize the signs of impeding earthquakes, enabling them to flee higher ground before the 2004 tsunami hit. Furthermore, the very act of eradicating different languages in the approach to natural science might actually be a disadvantage to the construction of knowledge in general as less scientists may be motivated to conduct these experiments if the audience is not wide enough in their native tongue. What do you guys think? How can I improve? Thank you!
  9. Discussion for the May 2017 TOK prescribed titles: “It is only knowledge produced with difficulty that we truly value.” To what extent do you agree with this statement?
  10. I recenetly started on my TOK essay after choosing question number five: Given access to the same facts, how is it possible that there can be disagreement between experts in a discipline? Develop your answer with reference to two areas of knowledge. I am simply wondering how many knowlegde questions it is normal/appropriate to discuss during the length of the essay. Any advice is highly appreciated :)
  11. Which title do you think is the Best??? or wich one did you chose???
  12. My Knowledge Question is To what extent are we morally obligating to follow others ethical theories?" do you think this question works? Why or Why not. How can I improve it? My RLS are Trump and how he has his own ethical theory and maybe we should accept him. My other RLS is how a shooter believe what he does is justified and ethical.

Also if you do believe staying up all night is crazy are here any situations which justify staying up all night? Thanks, BongSoldier OUT.
  16. So I have an essay due May 10th. (Originally May 4th, extensions are IB kids' best friends lol) The topic is as mentioned above. I wanna focus on 4 points (2 strengths and 2 weaknesses) For strengths, I have deductive and inductive logic provides evidence-based knowledge. For weaknesses, I have the rigidity of deductive to be used in ethical knowledge claims and the problematic nature of inductive logic as it encourages fast generalizations. I need help Thanks fellas
  17. HI y'all I would appreciate some pointers on the Theory of Knowledge presentation. I don't really understand how you can formulate a second order knowledge question from a real-life situation or even what a second order knowledge question is. I believe a knowledge question is just a question about knowledge so would a second order knowledge question be a question about a question about knowledge? Very confused. Any help would be much appreciated and accepted. Thanks, Crash «MemeReviewer» Bandicoot
  18. Dear IB Survival, I'd like to do a TOK presentation about the Torture at Abu Ghraib and I'm trying to find an overall knowledge claim to fit with it. I want to focus on who is to blame, where does the responsibility lie when no one said anything? It's based on the bystander effect and the human sciences in general. I have no clue how to structure this as a knowledge claim... please help
  19. WE ARE DESPERATE, WE DECIDED TO DO IT IN A GROUP OF 3 SO WE HAVE 30 MINUTES TO KILL. Our knowledge question: Is it true that sense perception lets the imagination flow and affects the perception of reality in the moment of knowing? We thought about using the tv show the voice or aliens as our real life situation but we still have no idea what to do. We would be very grateful and bake you cookies
  20. Without application in the world, the value of knowledge is greatly diminished. Consider this in respect with two areas of knowledge. I need help with ideas of what to write in here i cant find any information and I am confused. Is the value of knowledge always the same or it varies? Does the individual put a specific value to a knowledge, making it change its value? I am not sure if i am on the right track with this, also having trouble answering those questions.
  21. I am doing a TOK presentation on the banning of religious symbols in France. My real life situation is this banning as a whole, but more recently in 2014 a Muslim student in France was ordered to remove her hijab during a class at the La Sorbonne university. I am trying to think of a good knowledge question but can't come up with anything. I think I want it to have something to do with ethics and religion. Here is a link to my real life situation: http://english.alarabiya.net/en/perspective/features/2014/10/01/Hijab-controversy-returns-in-France-after-student-asked-to-remove-her-thing-.html Can anyone help?

For each WOKs, I will include one real life example and compare it to religion. Any feedback will be helpful
