  1. I have a test where I have to formulate a Strong Knowledge Question from a video that I will watch. Can anyone have any idea of a Knowledge Question for the following video? I need two knowledge question. One of them should not include the following AOKs: Ethics and Human Science. And the other one can be anything. Please help me with formulating a KQ.
  2. Hey guys, I'm just confused about something and would like to ask you for advice: How broad does the knowledge question(the main one) in the tok presentation have to be? The two tok teachers in my school have different opinions and I'm really puzzled. Thanks in advance.
  3. Hey guys, I have my TOK Presentation on Monday. My KQ was "How can we justify aggression in society?" Aggression in society is too narrow a term. I need help in modifying it. I modified it to "How can we justify emotional responses?" What can be my claims and counterclaims? I already have one claim and counterclaim sorted Kind Regards, Aryan
  4. This is my first post on this website - I've been relying on your answers for surviving through the year, so maybe if I scream into the yawning you'll answer me back. I've been looking at creating a KQ off of a RLS, and though this is a practice presentation for my TOK course, I was really curious to how a knowledge question could be formed off of this very specific situation. The article link is here: https://www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2017-07-24/black-women-picking-up-firearms-for-self-defense It plays a lot into gun control, racism, etc, so I think in the right hands this would be a really interesting topic (this is just my practice, so it's up there if one of you want to check it out). How would you guys formulate a KQ to this? I've got a couple like 'to what extent can the right to protect the self triumph the safety of a general population?', or 'what role does morals play in making exceptions to disadvantaged groups of society to ensure their wellbeing?', but none of them really apply, and to be honest, they make assumptions that aren't what I want to go off of.
  5. So, I started making my TKPPD and TOK presentation a few weeks ago. My original KQ was "To what extent is it right to exploit the knowledge of human science?" About a week ago, I was told that using right(which relates to ethics) is not a good idea as ethics is very questionable, it is more of an opinion rather than a second order question. My TOK presentation focuses on magic, in this KQ it was hypnosis. I have given a lot of other KQs but it wasn't good enough. I need input on what my KQ can be. Please help, this is urgent. I'm in my second year of IB and everything is piling up, I am getting more and more overwhelmed. I am supposed to finalize everything by tomorrow Your feedback would highly be appreciated, Thanks in advance guys
  6. Hi guys, I'm writing a TOK oral atm (we're doing practice ones at our school) and my group's topic is can we define universal beauty for women, (the physical appearance of women - our kq may need some rephrasing). In my group I am primarily focusing on beauty throughout history, and in different cultures. I was just wondering how many subsidiary/secondary questions I should bring up in my section (which is roughly 7 mins). some ones i was thinking of are - has our notion of beauty always been the same - why might different cultures define beauty differently - is the media responsible for modelling our perception of beauty today Also open to any advice and suggestions!! thanks so much xxx

so basically I am planning to take beauty and media as my topic in my tok presentation.my KQ is that to what extent is media;s perception of ideal body image affects our own body image?is that okay for a group of 3 and is there more scope?
  8. Hello! I'll be doing my TOK OP soon and my teachers aren't very helpful.. so I was wondering if I could show you all my brainstorm here and if you guys could deduce if it is doable? To what extent is language a reliable way of knowing in the natural sciences? My RLS is: The Father of Genetics, Gregor Mendel, in 1865 presented his results in German, the language of the Austro-Hungarian Empire of which he was a citizen living in Brun now in the Czech Republic. Unfortunately, his work was not noticed by the rest of the world until it was rediscovered by American researchers in the early 1900s. Much to their credit, they attributed the discovery of Mendel's Laws to him. How much more would the Science of Genetics have progressed had Mendel's work been known by the rest of the world instead of just among the German speakers since 1865? I'm arguing whether language is a reliable WOK in the natural science and my stand is that it is not because of it's inherent flaw as a WOK (language is subjective, the ubiquity of languages makes it difficult for the AOK in natural science because natural science is an objective study and language is tethered to emotion, culture, etc.) There's also the issue of loss in translation. In my presentation, I'm planning to talk about how monolingualism is a solution to the issue of the unreliability of language in natural science (i.e. adopting a universal language in natural science, it's always been a thing. Today, it's English) and real life examples of this is the use of IUPAC. On top of this, the use of models, diagrams help to overcome the unreliability of language. The reason why people need to come up with ways to work around the flaw of language is because without language, scientists would not have access to earlier established and accepted theories which means they would all have to start from the very beginning, the very basic ideas in their science. My counter-argument is that in practice, this 'homogenous' attitude selected a very specific way of looking at the world (due to monolingualism), therefore one can make it easy to discount other types of information as nothing more than folklore. I'm arguing that knowledge that isn't produced via traditional academic research methods which commonly exists in other languages still have scientific value such as indigenous tribes in Indonesia who knew from oral histories how to recognize the signs of impeding earthquakes, enabling them to flee higher ground before the 2004 tsunami hit. Furthermore, the very act of eradicating different languages in the approach to natural science might actually be a disadvantage to the construction of knowledge in general as less scientists may be motivated to conduct these experiments if the audience is not wide enough in their native tongue. What do you guys think? How can I improve? Thank you!
