  1. Hello people of IB Survival, I desperately need your help with brainstorming an idea for my Physics IA. I was thinking about doing an experiment on the affect of the angle made by a rooftop (which has crushed ice on it), on the range that the crushed ice covers - basically how further away it falls from the edge of the rooftop. This applies to real life since ice slipping off rooftops is an actual problem in countries that have those heavy snow fall days. But, I believe that we are meant to expand on the syllabus for the IA... and hence I think this RQ and this investigation would be too simple. Could I do this as my IA? Any suggestions would be appreciated x
  2. Hi!! This is my second year of IB and in order to study ESS more efficiently, I made a summary of the whole book. Let me know if you want it
  3. When processing data, which values should I calculate the average from? Masses or moles of Mg and O, or ratio? Help!!
  4. Hey guys, so I am doing my Chemistry IA on enthalpy changes of alcohol.. and so I was like half done my experiment (collected data) when I came across an IA topic researching exactly what I am researching, like my introduction, background info are different but our methodology to carry out the experiment is the same and data processing method is the same.... I was wondering is it okay to carry on? I still have my own original data, original background information, original introduction...its just our method to carry out the experiment and the way to find out the calculations is the same....... shall I carry on with my IA? please do let me know if you have any input on this, thanks.
  5. So I have this idea for my chemistry IA that I'm not sure of. I want to compare and contrast the effect of the different ratio between baking soda and acid vs. the amount of baking powder on the height the cake after baking. Baking powder is a mixture of baking soda and another acid that reacts when mixed with wet ingredient; it is used to make a cake "fluffy." I want to see if baking soda + acid will have the same effect as baking powder and how different amount of it will affect how much the cake rises. Possible variables: Independent- the ratio between baking soda and an acid + amount of baking powder (the total mass of baking powder and acid will be constant, and the mass of baking powder will change) Dependent- The height of the cake after baking Control: size of the mold, the amount of ingredients for the cake (flour, water, oil, etc.), baking temperature & time, amount of batter before baking, type of acid, type of baking powder, type of baking soda. The problem with this idea is that there are too many variables that can influence the result of the experiment. For example, how it is mixed, placement in the oven, spread of the batter etc. Will this be a good topic to do? Is there any way for me to control these variables? Or change some aspect of it to make it more controllable?
  6. Hi, I'm supposed to come up with a rough proposal of the chem IA. I've thought some and as I need to connect this to myself, I tried to something Korean. So I thought of measuring Vitamin C content in kimchi and its change according to the storage period of kimchi, and I'm not sure if this suits an SL IA. I also haven't learned oxidation and redox things yet, so would it be hard for me to do this without any pre knowledge? Thank you for your help
  7. Here is a website our bio teacher gave us, after seeing the amount of idea requests, I thought it might be an idea to share it. It has a list of practicals, most of which can be used for an IB bio lab report. There are also some documents such as examples, and consent sheets.
  8. Hi, so I'm not sure about my research question. I've been told that I need to be extremely specific and that the reader should know everything about my experiment after reading my research question. When I tried framing it, I saw that it was too long, but my teacher said it was okay. I'm really confused, because I've never seen such a long research question before. It is: What is the effect of different sugar concentrations (0.8M, 0.9M, 1.0M, 1.1M, 1.2M, 1.3M, 1.4M of 1:1 glucose/fructose solution) on the percent of sugar fermented by measuring the amount of ethanol when 1.00 ± 0.01g of yeast is added to 10.0 ± 0.1ml of sugar solution, by back titration with potassium dichromate, potassium iodide and sodium thiosulfate? Please advise me on how I can improve it. Thanks
  9. Hello, My individual investigation for biology is due next week. My topic was quickly approved by my teacher, but I missed the optional draft due date due to the fact that I was having trouble processing my data. My lab is about exercise physiology, and more specifically, the effect of resting time during running on muscle fatigue, meausred by how long it took test subjects to run a lap around a track after resting for different amounts of times between trials. When researching my topic, I found that a lot of what I was testing was outside of the basic ATP cellular respiration taught in IB bio SL. In my lab background info, I talk about ATP creation in muscles, which has to do with creatine phosphate, etc. So after all that rambling my question is, is this okay?? I'm freaking out cause my teacher has not even seen my report and will not look at it until its handed in because I missed the optional draft due date If anyone would also be willing to look at my lab, that'd also be great Thanks!
  10. Does anyone know any good Nervous system labs?! Or does anyone where to find some?
  11. Ok so my bio ia topic is about how temperature affects whether or not a enzyme denatures and causes my jello to become solid.... what do i do for my processed data........ and my calculations and stuff... plz help idk what to do and this ia is due like tmr so plzzzz help thank u!!!!
  12. So im doing my EE on biology, and im thingking of two topics right now, the first would be to do a comparative study between two small lakes in my neighbourhood, the lakes are about only a few kilometers apart, but on has been subjected to pollutants due to people using the area for recreational purposes, the other lake has remained pristine. I will do a water analysis to find the compounds dissolved in the water, and also collect the plants found in both lakes, also noting the densities and the species of plants found. The other topic im thingking of is to do an experiment where i compare the antibacterial effectiveness of natural and locally founds herbs and plants against modern and commercially available antiseptics. For example the locals in my area use garlic, tumeric and a mixture of other hers to form a paste that they rub on wounds. I will use an incubator and petri dishes with agar jelly to test the effectiveness of these local drugs.
  13. Hi everyone! Recently I have had all of my wisdom teeth removed and given to me, and I was wondering if you would have any ideas as to how I could incorporate them in an IA. Could I do something with bacterial growth? Thanks!
  14. Hey guys I have the first draft of my Bio IA due sometime in the first week of February. My research topic is: " What is the effect of temperature on the activity rate of amylase". Right now I'm having trouble finding a way to get my materials together. My top priority is enzymes as we can borrow scales, beakers and etc. I've been searching online but with no success. On Amazon they have a good deal, but it won't ship to Canada. I saw this other website but the approximate time it takes to ship from their warehouse in Montana to Calgary takes 2-3 weeks, which is past my deadline. As a last resort if I cannot get enzymes, I'm wondering if I could use saliva as it has amylase to convert starches to sugars or use another enzyme (trypsin, but I think this is harder to find). Where do you guys get your materials for your IA? On a side note, I need a way to regulate high temperatures without the use of the incubators we have at our school because our lab technician says most of them are being used for chemistry IAs. -PW
  15. I have quantified the calcium amount using EDTA titration in milk powders. Later I used this to check the effect of milk powders on chicken bones. The second part is solely based on observations. Is this a valid Chemistry HL topic? How can it be made better.
  16. Hello! I´ve been thinking about my Bio IA and I had an idea but now I have to change it. I´ve come up with something but to be honest I´m not sure if my topic is good enough for Bio SL, so I´d appreciate if any of you could give me your opinion. My topic: I would measure the sweat rate per hour of 3 men and 3 women practicing 3 different sports. Some studies have showed that men tend to have a bigger sweat rate than women so my experiment would try to support that hypothesis. I feel like the experiment is too easy, and apart from doing some calculations to get the sweat rate and plotting my results I don´t think I´m doing a really deep analysis. Maybe I can change it up a little bit, but I would like to know if any of you have any ideas on how to make my topic a better choice for my Bio SL IA.
  17. Hi, is there a specific structure/layout to be followed when writing the a HL biology IA. My teacher says to put the titles as they are marked (like Personal engagement, exploration, evaluation) but i feel that this is not the correct or general way to do it. and would they mark you down for structuring it that way, as it takes away from the general structure of a lab report. thanks in advance.
  18. Hi I am designing my chem IA on quantitative determination of acid content and doing one on acidity of vinegar and I'm not really comfortable with Chemistry IA's... And it seems like google isn't really helping me at all. So just a quick question because I just wanted to be sure, would temperature and exposure to air affect the acidity of Vinegar? Are there any other factors? Also, if I wanted to do temperature or air exposure, what would you recommend the temperature or time range should be? Thank you so much! I really appreciate your help!
  19. Hello, I have my ESS IA due friday and I was told to include error bars, however my figure is a bar chart and the error bars are very small. How would I analyse this in the analysis part of the IA? Thank you
  20. I am doing my Biology IA on the effect of using your dominant and non-dominant hand on reaction times as a response to visual stimuli. If any of you has some spare time, could you do a very quick reaction time test, which will take maximum five minutes, to provide me with some more data? All you have to do is visit this website: You do the test twice, once with your dominant hand and once with your non-dominant hand. Every test consists of five reaction times. Once you do it, could you please post them for each hand for me? This will mean 10 times in total, 5 for each hand. There is no need for the averages. Just remember that after you click once, you should note down the time because only the average is shown in the end on the website. In case you do it, thanks, it will be such a huge help in increasing my sample number
  21. Hi! I am currently in the midst of writing the first draft for my biology IA, but due to the fact that I am making a study on the inheritance of pied mutations in budgerigars, i.e. not working in a laboratory, I am struggling to structure my IA. What differs in the presentation of field research from a laboratory experiment? What is the general recommended structure? Thanks in advance, and please help a sister out.
  22. I was considering doing my IA about tea (because I'm obsessed with it heh). One idea that I have is measuring the effect of water temperature on the caffeine content of black tea. Considering I'd have to measure the caffeine content at different temperature intervals, and also take multiple trials, is this far too complex? And is extracting caffeine itself a complex procedure for an SL Chem IA? merci merci merci for any help Also, any other suggestions would be highly appreciated.
  23. hey again guys, I have one quick question that I hope someone can answer. Do you think it´d be fine if I used two independent variables for my Bio IA? I´m scared that my experiment would be considered too easy so I thought that maybe using two independent variables would make it better. The problem is, there won´t be a relation between the two independent variables so I´m not sure if I´m gonna be having troubles when writing my report.
  24. It was really hard for me to find a biology IA, specially because I really wanted it to be something that I´m interested in and passionate about. So finally I decided to choose something that is related to me in a way. I have Hyperhidrosis, which is a medical condition in which a person sweats excessively and unpredictably. The idea for my IA is to see if there is a correlation between a person who has hyperhidrosis and a person who has cystic fibrosis. What I´m planning to do is use a conductivity sensor to measure the electrical conductivity in sweat produced after performing a physical activity in a person with hyperhidrosis (me), in a person with anhidrosis (which is the contrary to hyperhidrosis, aka a person who almost never sweats), and a normal person, and see if any of the results (sodium and/or chloride concentrations) are related to those of a person who has cystic fibrosis. I wouldn´t perform the experiment on a person with cystic fibrosis, but I found some information about the concentration of chloride in a person to see if he or she has CF: Equal to or less than 39 mmol/L = CF is very unlikely 40 – 59 mmol/L = intermediate means that CF is possible Greater than or equal to 60 mmol/L = CF is likely to be diagnosed My teacher said the experiment seems fine, but I´d like to hear other opinions. Also, I´m not sure if the conductivity sensor will be able to measure sweat, so do you think that I should go to a medical lab or hospital and ask for the materials used in a normal sweat test?
  25. My proposal for my bio EE is due soon, and I'm still unsure of what I should research on. I'm generally drawn to researching on the antibacterial effects of different substances, and am wondering if it will be easy to carry out in the lab. I was thinking about how different soaps may have different antibacterial effects, but I'm unsure if it seems too easy for an EE. Additionally, I was thinking of studying the effects of different probiotics on bacteria. Are there any other subjects of research that I should consider? I'm not sure if bacteria is easy to work with, as the results may be unpredictable. Will working with plants be easier? Thanks!
