    Calculator Tips (Paper 2)

Hi again, so my exam is in a few days and I'm pretty much done studying. All I'm really wondering is, are there any calculator tips or any videos/websites that thoroughly explain the functions of the Ti 83 Plus Graphing Calculator? Particularly for like probability or statistics but any general special tips or hacks would be nice. If you have any videos, websites or just personal tips, please let me know!!! Thanks!!!!!

    Math IA guidance needed!!!!

Hi guys. I'm in my last year of Math IB (SL) and I'm in desperate need of some guidance. I have no idea how to go about doing my IA. I've decided that I want to find the optimal speed at which a vehicle (a tank specifically) should travel to get the best fuel efficiency. Along with this, I might also try and figure out the temperatures at which oil would freeze inside the engine by like graphing/modelling it somehow?????? As you can see, I'm really lost and I don't know how to approach this topic and I don't even know what math I should be using. Any advice on how I should try and pursue this?
  4. Hi I'm wondering if anybody can explain the reverse chain rule to me? I don't mean the whole U-Substitution thing, I mean the "shortcut" way. The formula is ∫f'(g(x)) · g'(x) dx = f(g(x)) + c. Also, we haven't learned calculus and trig or calculus and logs yet so please just use basic equations in any examples. Thank you!!!!

    Math IA Projectile Motion Help

Hello everyone, currently I am writing a new math IA and i decided to write it under the topic of Projectile Motion. What what I want to do is take a video of a setter (in volleyball) and him setting the ball up. I'll take that video and create a graph and will derive that function. The thing is, I think that this is a little to vague, and I really don't have a clue on what to really explore within my topic. For the volleyball idea, I wanted to originally see what's the best place to put the ball in the air to get a good hit in for the spiker. If you have any further suggestions on what else I should do with this topic, I am open to any suggestions. Thank you!
  6. Can you use the TI-83 (plus) calculators to create a frequency histogram with uneven classes? (we call it a frequency density graph) If so, how? (I'm not sure how to input the ranges, for example, the range is 0-30, 30-40, 40-60 etc. I have calculated the frequency density itself I'm just not sure how to create the graph on a calculator.)

    Math IA - Correlation

I really need some help rn. I'm thinking of doing a math exploration in the topic of Correlation between GDP Per Capita and Gini Coefficient in Countries. Basically, Gini coefficient is a measure of income equality in a country. The higher the coefficient is, the higher the income inequality. However, the mathematics skills & analyses I will use & do will probably only be from the topics of descriptive statistics and linear modelling. And so far, the IA samples I've seen with similar topics in correlation are only from math studies, so I'm getting concerned. is this topic too simple?

    Math IA Help!

Hi, so I decided that for my math IA, I wanted to look at the impacts of asteroids hitting the Earth using this website: https://www.purdue.edu/impactearth/ The idea I have is to collect different data like how big the crater size is and how it changes depending on the size or speed of the asteroid and more stuff like that. I then want to make graphs and find trends and see if these factors makes equations and stuff. I was also thinking that I could use the Richter scale to look at the intensities of the earthquakes and maybe show how that works. I don't know if this is very in depth and I know that I should use more math when exploring this but I'm not sure what else to do. I was wondering if anyone had any input? Thank you

    SL or HL Maths?

Hey guys, I'm in a pretty stressful situation as I can't decide whether to change my current SL Math to HL Math, and we're already getting to the point where it is too late to change. My situation: Currently taking HL Bio, Chem, Eng A Lang/Lit, Danish B and SL Math, and History. I want to study medicine in the UK after I graduate in 2020, and my dream is to go to Cambridge, but as I've read on their website only 2% of acceptances go to those who only have 2 subjects out of HL Bio, Chem, Phys, and Math. As I can only have two sciences, my only option is to switch to HL math (which is already quite a bit ahead of SL) to push myself out of those ridiculously low chances (on top of the already low chance of getting into Cambridge). I've talked with my teacher about it and he said that it would be incredibly difficult to catch up, but think I would be able to. My main concern is whether the work I have to put into getting that 6 in Math HL will damage my grades in my other classes (currently getting 7 in Bio and Chem which I definitely need to keep), and whether it would be better to simply stay in SL Math and get a 7 in that class without as much effort. Thanks for any help, I am really stressed about what to do cause I know that HL Math would look better on my diploma but I'm not sure whether it would overall look worse if I get a worse grade in HL than I would have in SL and my points go down cause of it. Edit: Realised I forgot to write about why I posted it on the maths forum. Mainly looking for advice from people in HL who can tell me if it would be too difficult, as someone who is good at math but no genious. Currently have a high 7 in standard but I have heard that the gap between SL and HL is so massive that it means nothing. Was wondering what you guys think and as a person who is okay with math, but doesn't love it, if they could survive HL math.

Math SL book - Cambridge online version

Hello, I am looking for the online version of the Mathematics for the IB Diploma Standard Level published by Cambridge University Press. Does anyone have a google drive link to it? Thanks!
  12. Hi guys!! Im retaking HL Chemistry and SL Math this upcoming November and I was wondering if there is any advice anybody could give me?.. Or if there is anybody in the same position as me who is also retaking one of the subjects in November:) If you guys have any advice regarding possible online review courses, materials you recommend, or just the nature of the November examinations I would really really appreciate it. Thank you!!☺️
  13. Hi! So my math sl ia is due sometime soon, and I can't seem to get started with it. This is the fifth time I've changed my topic, so I've wasted quite a lot of time. I finally decided to do my math sl ia on this topic: Modelling the development of swimming performance in the Asian Games.I'm planning to focus on the gold medal winning times in the women's 50 and 100 freestyle. However, I'm not sure on what mathematical concepts and processes I'm supposed to use to model it. I've read a lot of literature on it, but I still don't quite grasp the concept of how to model it. I've tried asking my teacher, but she isn't much help. Anyone can give me some guiding points on how I should take on the topic? Thank you so much!

    HELP Needed for Math IA

Hi I’m going into math sl and we have to write an IA. I wanted to write an IA on population growth in China but i have no idea how to. Can someone tell me how to write this and if it’s a suitable subject for Math SL IA?
  15. So I am trying to get my math IA done this summer but am having a hard time choosing a topic that I like. I am really interested in film and cinematography and would like to incorporate it in my math IA but have found nothing on math ia topics that involved film from past math IA topics. I decided that I would come up with my own math IA exploration that has not been done before. My topic/question is "Does movies/films that use the Fibonacci sequence and Golden Ratio make high profits compared to movies that don't?" Is this a good idea for a math IA topic? Could I make it better? Are there any other math IA topics that involve film or cinematography? Is there other ways I can involve film and cinematography in my IA like through geometry, conditional probability, etc.? What general topics make for a high marked IA? What makes for a good IA? Also these are my other topics for a math IA if film doesn't work out are: Modelling Infectious Diseases Medical Data Mining Finger Ratio Predicts Maths Ability? Modelling a Nuclear War Are these good topics that could get a high mark? Between 18/20 to 20/20? I am also interested in a topic in healthcare/medicine. Any topic ideas for that? All replies are appreciated, Thanks.
  16. Hey guys. It’s my first year of DP. I’ve gotten an overall score of 6 in my previous semester, and I seemed to be surviving all right. But in the past few tests I took, I got a 2 and a 3. It felt like I understood the concepts properly and I didn’t have that much of an issue answering the homework and past exam questions that my teacher prepares before tests. She also seemed concerned about my grades. I’ve spoken to her, and she said that I would just have to keep on doing more work. There is only a few months before the end of the first year. I don’t understand why I’m struggling so much all the sudden, and dropping to studies now would require a lot of catchup (I was never a math guy; even if they’re stuff I’ve learnt before, I’ll still have troubles revising them after missing out for so long). Do any of my fellow warriors of the Depression Programme have an advice on what I should do, and perhaps a reason to why I’m doing so bad now? Thanks.
  17. Hello everybody, So i did the IB exams may 2017 and I ended up with a final result of 27 points which I am quite pleased with considering how I really struggled throughout the programme and was predicted to fail. However, the only grade I don't like is the grade 2 I got in Maths SL. I really regret taking SL and wish would have taken Studies instead. I am actually going to resit Maths SL and although I have studied, it has been a struggle to do so independently. I am interested in applying for UK unis in 2019 and I have found several unis that accept 27 points. (I want to study architecture). Anyway, my question is, if I don't manage to get a better grade, can they overlook my 2 in Maths? I am thankful for your answers.
  18. Hi there! So I've been wondering for a while now- should I drop from Math SL to Math Studies? I'm currently averaging a 6 in Math SL, but I feel like with the steady increase of work I might not be able to cope up with it and fear that my grade might drop significantly (I already scored a 4 on a test that we did recently...) . I want to study Politics/International Relations/History/Economics at uni (undecided major- I'll probably end up double majoring) so really, do I need Math SL (I ask this because Econ is one of my major options) ?? Please help!
  19. I studied for my mocks in maths, and i was studying for a little over a month. i did all the questions in the book and almost all of them were correct. however when the mocks came, i started solving problems with ease and i left out 1 or 2 questions. i though that the minimum i would get was a 5. becuase if i studied for such a long time, every week i would put 10 hours just for maths for a little over a month. When i get my mocks back, I'm confused, angry and just miserable. i got a 2. My dad saw me studying maths for such a long time and he knew that i was going through the book easily, but i also was working hard. He was disappointed at what happened and eventually the rest of my family too. anyone who has ever gone through this know how to cope with the situation im in?

Math SL II or AP Calc AB

Hey everyone! Please help a junior decide which math course to take senior year. I'm not a diploma candidate, but taking 2 HLs next year and 1-2 SLs. Currently taking IB Math SL I, thinking about SL II next year, but my current math teacher said that if not pursuing the diploma - take AP calc AB instead. Pros for AP: * in US, more likely to get college credit * don't have to do an IA (but I've never done this before, so I don't know how tough it is). Pros for IB: * I'm told that I won't go as far into calc concepts as I would with AP calc (I don't like math, so this is a plus!), but I'm not sure if it's worth the trade off of the work required for the IA * I'm probably going to be an arts/humanities major, so I'm not so sure advanced math concepts are all that important anyhow * the whole reason I enjoy IB vs. AP - holistic approach to learning Thoughts??

    Math IA - Traffic modelling

Hi, I need some help with my IA. I have a database about monthly traffic volume per year. I want to model a function that satisfies with the trend for the last 17 years... I don't know if that is enough for my Math SL course requirements. As well I don't know exactly what to say in the analysis. Thanks. Let me know about any doubts!
  22. So recently I just received feedback from my teacher regarding my firts draft for my Math IA. I got 2/6 for criteria E because apparently my IA didn't commensurate with the level of the syllabus. I found this rather surprising since previous SIR Model Math IA's have score very well in this criteria and in overall. My teacher said I need to demonstrate my level of understanding and knowledge by using differential equations in more depth..which is HL. So who is in the wrong here? My math regarding the model is correct. Will the IB moderate my IA up? And how do I talk about differential equations in more depth? I did some calculations with the equations to get the rate of change of each individual components of the model and graphed them. But that's it. And now my teacher penalized me heavily because I didn't use the right level of math. Please help me!

    Math IA topic help!

I am a year 1 student and just covered 4 chapters in the book, but my teacher told us to do our IA already without telling us how to do it. So I just did my presentation before winter break about the Fibonacci Sequence and the teacher told me to change it since it's overdone. However, since we haven't covered much I was worried about my current level and what I can do for IA. Is there any Math IA topics to avoid other than the Golden Ratio? I was thinking of investigating the math in Islamic art because I am interested in photography and art. The other topic I'm contemplating is math in bridge building. Thank you!
