  1. Hey future ib colleagues, I’m the next victim of IB! Its that time in my life where I actually have to think about what I want to be in life. I HAVE NO IDEA. Teachers are commanding (I’m over exaggerating a bit) subject choices for IB. I chose subjects that interested me other than actually dying and trying to figure out what career I want. Here it is: Higher level: Chemistry Arabic Psychology Standard level: Math English Physics can people who took these topics give me advice? Also what career can I get out of these choices??? Help!!!!
  2. Hi guys, So my friend is deciding to replicate an old IB math exploration. I was against it but she said it wouldn't matter. The old ib exploration scored a high grade and it was on motion. She's gonna do motion too in another sport similar to the previous one with her own data though. Same format and general ideas and calculations throughout but again, her own data. Would this count as plagiarism? Also, the old IA didn't get sampled. It got 20/20 in 2014. Would this be detected on turnitin? Basically it's a complete replication of what was found in the IA using different numbers and different wording, just the same format and order and ideas.
  3. My math class has been assigned our IA's this past month. I'm wondering what kind of math processes would fit my topic best. the question is "Is there a correlation between number of drunk teen drivers and the total number of alcohol related crashes?" Although I'm not even sure if correlation would fit this best. I have to have the math portion of my IA done Wednesday so I'd really appreciate some helpful feedback.
  4. Dear Sir's/ Madam, I am currently struggling to derive a suitable Math IA topic for my Math Sl course. My teachers say choose something personal, that interests you. I am very interested in language and literature. Are there any Math IA topics that are associated with language and literature? Thank you in advance.
  5. Long Post I am in Year 1 taking Mathematics as my subject for the extended essay. Initially i decided to use rotation of conic sections as my topic for my EE but i decided to change my topic again right before my IRS is needed (bc i dont feel motivated anymore on the old topic). Now, i am still trying to think of a new topic so that i can start writing next year. So far i read a Sample EE that garnered 32/36 points. It is about optimizing the distance of the kick of a ball from the conversion point to the try line in rugby considering only the plane parallel to the ground. The EE was easy to understand and as it simply defined the diagram and applied trigonometry, functions, and calculus(derivative) to look for the optimal distance and angle. Along with this method, he also used Circle theorems to achieve the same result. This EE kind of inspired me because it is simple yet his investigation is profound and he had a lot to discuss. Because of this, i thought of switching to the topic of applying maths in sports. One of my considerations is soccer or football as it is closely related to rugby as well as ice hockey since it doesnt deal much with gravity, but alas i dont play soccer, football, or ice hockey so it may not benefit me to look into this (but i am willing to look into these if it is simpler) Another one is table tennis where i thought of looking into the finding the range of angles wherein when hitting the ball, it would land and the maximum location(edges of the table) or near the net. One problem i encountered with this problem is that there are multiple variables regarding defining where the farthest and shortest trajectory of the ball with respect to the racket, how i hit the ball: angles along x and y, position of ball on the table, height where i hit the ball, gravity, spin on the ball, velocity etc. Last problem is how i will pattern this as a math EE as physics concepts are used here as well (projectile motions, angle of incidences etc). in short, id like to ask your insights and possible remedies to my problem on 1. Concepts in sports where i can apply mathematics 2. How to deal with the plethora of variables that can be seen in the topic 3. math concepts i can use to tackle it the table tennis problem 4. how to tackle the physics here mathematically, any advice Hope you guys can help, im sorry for the long backstory and the very demanding questions.
  6. Hello, in a few weeks, my math I.A. is due and for it to be completed I need candidates to fill out a google form. It will take no less than 5 minutes and your completion of the form is necessary for my I.A. If you guys have any feedback afterwards feel free to reply to this post. 8. I am doing my SL Mathematics IA on the connection between inflation and unemployment rates and made model, calculated future rates and used differential calculus to compare and contrast results from both developed and developing countries. I think that I still could incorporate more maths but am all out of ideas. I was wondering if anyone could think of some extensions or other areas which I could inquire into. Thanks beforehand!
  9. I have my first rough draft of my math IA due in one month, and I am having trouble understanding if my topic is too simple, difficult, or vague for a Math IA, I would appreciate some advice. NOTE; I DO NOT TAKE PHYSICS, NOR WILL I BE TAKING IT. I realise many people say I should take on a topic that involves physics if I don't take it or completely understand the concepts I am using from Physics, but I have no choice. My math teacher told me I can't change my topic, so I'm stuck with it! My idea was to maximize the success of a volleyball serve using the concepts of projectile motion. I wanted to find the math behind the sport I've played since I was a child, and improve the actual serve. There is a direct correlation between the height of a serve and the distance it travels. The math I am planning to use is parabolas, differential calculus, and maybe showing the spread of distance data collected in an experiment. My math teacher told me it would be best to start with collecting data, as it would help to structure my IA better. My tutor mentioned I could use an online simulation to simulate results of a volleyball serve and the distance it would travel under the specifications given (which would not account for air resistance or other resistance factors). Or, I may have access to a machine we use during practices which launches volleyballs to mimic a serve, for passing repetition purposes. I could set the angle to release the volleyball at, which I would change (Independent variable), which would result in a change in distance (dependent). The speed would stay constant. I would measure the total distance the ball reaches based on the angle I release the ball at. My tutor said I could use a differential calculus equation to calculate the height at which my ball reached before its downfall. However, upon speaking with an IB physics teacher at my school, he believes that this would not work well in terms of relating back to projectile motion because projectile motion that we learn at school uses one-dimensional and two-dimensional scenarios. It does not take into account all resistances against the volleyball serve. My math teacher said this was fine, as long as I explain these limitations in my investigations, and suggested I could try another ball with a different mass/density to do the same experiment to show how the density of the volleyball affects the way it performs in my sport. Am I on the right track? I am confused and stumped as to what my next steps should be. All help and criticism are appreciated.
  10. Hi everyone! I am a DP2 student and our Math teacher has started talking about our IA. My main idea is to compare acceptance rates of for an example, top 100 colleges in the US for Econ (which I want to study) and then compare it to the median salaries graduates get from those unis. I want to see if there's any correlation between the two in order to figure out whether I should apply for highly selective schools. If the correlation is not that high, then it doesn't really make sense for me to apply to them as the return will be the same if I go to a moderately selective school. I would construct a regression line and everything. My main question is - is this too simple of a concept for Math SL? I want to add a more complex concept that would fit in with the topic, but I can't think of anything. Do you have any ideas that might help me? For an example, I thought about constructing a utility value curve or something, but after discussing it with my teacher, we figured that it wouldn't work. She suggested constructing some pie charts, but it sounds like that would be way too simple. I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me as this is due by the end of the month. Thanks!
  11. Hi! Please help me! I want to do my Math IA on something involving Korea and/or K-pop!!!!! I have no idea if I am allowed though to use as I'm not even sure where to find info for!
  12. Hi to all! I have to submit my HL Math IA tomorrow (Hopefully I will get another chance to update the file), and I have two topics. One is Modelling climate change and the other is Fibonacci series. Idk which one to go ahead with and how to do the IA Please help! I prefer to go ahead with Fibonacci series since it is the easier of the two. I really really need help as to what to include in the IA. Also what format should I use I know this is super last minute, but procrastination got the worst of me
  13. I was thinking of doing my SL Math IA on the optimization of a rugby kick. This involves some calculus and conics. I was wondering if this is a decent math IA idea? Thank you!
  14. Can I do medicine in the United Kingdom without doing Math SL in the ib?
  15. I'm done with my math hl ia but it involves a lot of 3d geometry and stuff. I think I want to write it by hand I have a very neat handwriting and I can also draw the shapes. Can I do that or would it effect my grade negatively?
  16. Hi! I want to do my extended essay on proving Newton's law of cooling. I want to use different liquids and do an experiment in order to compare what the law says to the real life situation. I'm on Math HL and Physics SL and I'm not quite sure where this ee could fit. My preference is math, but I'm afraid that maybe it's too experimental. What do you think? Thank you!
  17. I was thinking about doing my EE in HL maths and found some interesting topics like Rubik's cube permutations, golden ratio and beauty, what 'e' is, what 'π' is, and so on. One of my hobbies is coding (I also do HL computer science and know python), and on one website, someone said that you could involve coding in your EE. How exactly is this done? Has anyone done this before? Thanks, help is always appreciated!
  18. Please could guys take this survey so that I can get enough data for my Math IA? I already have 24 responces and I only need 50. It is very quick, only four questions and it is basically how many IB/AP classes you take and how much sleep you get per night. https://goo.gl/forms/JIJQmFDp40hUYepq1 Thank you guys so much I really appreciate it.
  19. Can you guys please take this survey? I need 50 responses to do it in my Math IA and it would really help me out. It is very quick just 4 questions long. It only asks about how many IB classes that you take/took and how many hours of sleep you get/got every night. https://goo.gl/forms/0dADpYKOblMchQP82 Please help me out guys.
  20. Hey guys! I'm looking for a math IA topic along the lines of medicine! I feel like the topic of the spread of infectious diseases is extremely overused and that maybe there could be a spin on it I could look at? Maybe somehow using statistics to find the most or least susceptible countries after findng the spread of infectious diseases? Also is there any calculations that could be done for some sort of bacteria immunization and how anti-biotics work to find out estimations of when antibiotics stop working for that bacteria? I would love to a medical math ia and any help is appreciated!
  21. Hello everyone I just started my first year of IB (woohoo) and my subjects are English HL, History HL, Biology HL, French B SL, Math SL, Art SL. I want to study Law and I was wondering if the UK universities had any specific requirements for the law course? I read that generally uk university care more about your final score than the actual subjects that you take (or atleast for law). My dilemma is Math SL, I really want to drop to Math Studies to be able to maximize my IB score and because Math SL is going to be too challenging for me. So will having math studies affect my college application in any way? Thank you!!
  22. I'm a month into IB and my classes so far are: HL Maths, Physics, Chemistry, and Arabic B; SL Economics and English LL. However, I've been rethinking what I want to do in the future and have been moving away from engineering/physics towards more Maths and computer science. If I decide to drop chemistry for comp sci, my schedule will be as follows: HL Maths, Physics, English LL; SL Comp Sci, Economics, Spanish AB. My school doesn't offer computer science Higher Level. I'm worried that this setup is not as strong as the first one with regards to me applying for mathematics at Oxford. Also, without CS HL, there is no way I can apply for CS at Oxford and be taken seriously. Thoughts?
  23. Hey I live in the Netherlands started DP1 this week and I was wondering if any European students that were also doing the IB wanted to create a study group. It would be cool if we took similar subjects so that we could help each other out, and I think it doesn't matter really were in Europe as the time is either the same or 1 or 2 hours difference Anyway if anyone is interested hmu. My IB classes are the following: Chemistry HL Biology HL English A Lit HL Geography SL Spanish SL Math SL
  24. Hi, I have my mock exams soon, and I heard they're important if you want to directly apply for university, however in my case I am forced to take a gap year due to personal reasons. Would the predicted grades from my mocks still even matter or can I just apply to university with my final grades? If they don't matter, it doesn't matter, I studied for them anyways, but I just want to know whether they are necessary. Thanks in advance!
  25. Hello everyone, I'm currently working on my math IA but I havent decided on which topic I want to do. However, I want to do my math IA on integration or differentiation. If you know any topic that is suitable for HL, please comment. Your response will be appreciated!
