    Dropping Math HL to SL

So I currently take HL Biology HL Economics HL Math SL Chinese B SL English Lit SL Visual Arts Semester reports came out recently and i ended up with a 6 in bio, 7 in Econ, 4 in math, 6 in Chinese, 5 in english, and a 6 in art. I also participate in a crazy amount of after school activities and face a LARGE amount of stress from my math class. As far as college, I plan on applying to highly competitive schools (UC Berkeley, Stanford, UChicago...) I currently have a low 4 in my HL math class and I know it's only going to go down from there. The only thing discouraging me from dropping math' classes is the fact that colleges will see that I dropped to an "easier" math class and will see me as a quitter or unintelligent. Which weighs more, me getting a higher grade in an "easier" class and my mental health or the possibility of getting rejected for dropping classes?

Surviving a grade 1 in exams?

Well, is it possible? I get good okayish grades in every other subject, but I'm bound to get a 1 in math studies. I've worked hard in math but I'm just not a math kind of guy, and I've heard a sufficient grade average makes up for a 1 in math, but I've seen people on here claim a single 1 keeps you from getting the diploma. Can I get a final verdict?

IB Math SL IA help needed!!

Hi, so for my IA topic I chose to explore if there's a correlation between race/country and adoption. I've run into a problem though because I'm focusing on 5 different countries and then the number of adoptions from each of those countries over 19 years so I have 5 seperate scatter plots. If I try to find the correlation based off each scatter plot, it would be between the number of adoptions and years for just that one country, instead of all the countries and adoption rate as a whole. How can I fix that? Do I look at it a different way or am I just focusing on it the wrong way? Please help!!
  5. Hello everyone! As a part of my math ia, I am analysing the pharmacokinetic profile of a drug. A part of the pharmacokinetic profile involves finding the area under the curve of the medication's concentration - time graph. I think this area is meant to represent the total exposure of the drug to the paitent's body. This is what it says online as well. In other words, it would be the total amount of drug absorbed by the body. However, I'm not quite sure how this works, as the units used for the y axis (miligrams of the drug in each litre of drug - mg/L) are completely different from the x axis (time in hours or minutes). Multiplying these units would give you (mg*hr)/L. What does this mean?! My question is: what would the area under the curve of a concentration - time graph represent? Please take a look at the picture below if you need a visual. (I found this picture online) Thanks for any help you can provide!

    EE Math HL HELP

Hey, I don't have a lot of time and I'm desperately searching for my EE topic. I've been thinking about applications of continued fractions or looking for the best way to define pi number by probability. I dunno what to do with the first topic to show my personal engagement and I'm not sure whether the second idea isn't too simple and should be used rather to write an IA. Can you comment on them and/or eventually give some ideas? :/ I feel like committing a suicide but I like this subject... Any tips to survive?

    Math IA Help!

Hello! I want to make an IA on the carbon dioxide emission in my and one neighbor country. I will make the best corresponding functions for them and then I will connect my results with the population in those states. So I will find the correlation between emission and number of people, conclude and predict the future outcome. Is this ok? Could you suggest something?
  10. Hi, for my IA I was thinking of doing the hat check problem. Essentially it goes like this; group of men walk into a restaurant checking in n number of hats at the door. The restaurant mixes the the hats up and as the evening is over, each man is randomly given a hat from the pile. What is the probability that no person gets their hat back? Suprisingly, the answer is 1/e. I am a math Sl student. I figured HL/further math students would likely recognize the problem. If anyone is familiar with the problem could you please elaborate on whether this is SL level or above. I have found some explanations rather complicated and wondered whether it was ultimately worth it given the amount of energy it would require with mocks coming up. I know I would be able to get my head around it, but have begun to doubt whether the return (in terms of marks) for this question would be worth it. I have time to change my topic so I am not particularly worried.

    Math IA Help!

Hi, so I decided that for my math IA, I wanted to look at the impacts of asteroids hitting the Earth using this website: https://www.purdue.edu/impactearth/ The idea I have is to collect different data like how big the crater size is and how it changes depending on the size or speed of the asteroid and more stuff like that. I then want to make graphs and find trends and see if these factors makes equations and stuff. I was also thinking that I could use the Richter scale to look at the intensities of the earthquakes and maybe show how that works. I don't know if this is very in depth and I know that I should use more math when exploring this but I'm not sure what else to do. I was wondering if anyone had any input? Thank you

    New Math Curriculum?

I'm from class 2021 (which means that I'll start DP next school year) and I had just recently learned that there are going to be changes in the math curriculum going into effect starting next year. So I heard that maths will be divided into 2 different subjects, Analysis & Approaches and Applications & Interpretations. With these new changes and my subject selection coming soon, there are a few questions I would like to ask: 1. What are the differences between the two 2. How do they compare to the current Math curriculum (Studies, SL, HL) in terms of difficulty/workload 3. And finally, if I'm planning to study Economics in the UK which one should I select (university entry requirements aren't updated to the new IB math curriculum yet) Thanks

    Math IA

Hey guys, basically my math IA first draft is due tomorrow and I don't have a research question yet, my IA topic is on the math of figure skating and I am having trouble finding or creating a research question that shows the correlation between math and figure skating, my topic might have some physics but that's not the point, if anyone can help me find a research question for my topic I would be grateful. Thank you in advance. - Sara.
  14. Hi everyone! This is a survey for my Math Internal Assignment (for the IB diploma). I am analyzing how humans perceive beauty, specifically if people consider a face more attractive if it is closer to the Golden Ratio. It is a quick, anonymous survey which will take only a few minutes and it would be a great help to me! It took me a long time to edit all of these photos so I would be really grateful if you participated in it, thank you! Link: https://www.surveylegend.com/s/122r

  17. Hello guys, as a topic in Math IA, I chose to explore mathematics behind voting systems. According to my research from various papers, its closely related to probability/statistics, but nothing else. If I won't have Calculus and stuff like logarithm in my IA, does it mean it is a weak IA? If anyone has Math sources on voting, please help me out. Thank you in advance

    Is it always this bad?

SOoooo I being open here is the IB always this hard. I'm a year 1 and I'm 2 months into school. So far I am doing terrible in all of my classes except Mandarin SL. It gets better right? Because if yes, how did ya'll do it??

    MATH IA HELP

Soo, I did my IA based on Newton's law of cooling (for differential equations) and, although in the beginning my teacher said it was ok, now he told me that it is too simple and that I should somehow expand on it. Does anyone have an idea on how I could make it a bit more complex? Or perhaps something that I could add to make it more diverse?
  20. Is finding the derivative of trigonometric/circular functions, like the sine and cosine functions, part of the Math SL syllabus? Is this the level of Math SL or is it more advanced? I'm thinking of doing this in my calculations for my IA. Would it work?
  21. Hi guys!! Im retaking HL Chemistry and SL Math this upcoming November and I was wondering if there is any advice anybody could give me?.. Or if there is anybody in the same position as me who is also retaking one of the subjects in November:) If you guys have any advice regarding possible online review courses, materials you recommend, or just the nature of the November examinations I would really really appreciate it. Thank you!!☺️

    Math IA

I still havent started my IA, but i was looking for a good question that doesnt include probability does anyone have suggestions
  23. It's my first year at IB and I took English, Biology, Chemistry and Geography as HL, but I wasn't good enough on my math test so the teachers assigned me into math studies without any chance to even shift to SL. I was wondering, are there any unis that accept you for having a high level of sciences, but a low level of math? I was researching some stuff and most of it is terrifying for me since they require to have a minimum of SL. I was looking around Western Europe and Canada and I don't know what to do. Please help me ;-;
  24. I am am work on my mathematics extended essay, and I want to do it on: 1. Coming up with a general formula for the volume of the five Platonic Solids (I need to know from other mathematics higher level students if this is two simple). 2. The proof(s) for Euler's polyhedron formula. 3. The Travelling Salesman Problem (not sure how much math is involved as opposed to computer science). I am most interested in the first but willing to drop it if it is too simple. I am also open to suggestions of other interesting topics in geometry (the subject I have the most interest in). I want to get some work done before the summer break ends in about 4 weeks, so I could really use some advice (especially considering my adviser has gone incognito).

    Permutations and Combinations?

Hey guys, Im not sure whether or not IB goes into Permutations and Combinations too deeply or even at all. I've asked my seniors and other IB schools if they did this topic, for which i got a reply saying no. IB HAS stated Permutations and Combinations in their 2016 syllabus so does that mean it's going to be in IB diploma exam? btw i start the IB program in 2 days
