  1. Hey, So I have been doing HL math for about the last 6 months of so, and I have done Topic 1, Topic 2, and Topic 3, and I more or less understand the topics, but the problem is when it comes to tests or quizzes I dont know how to attempt these questions, its like I have never seen them before. Can someone guide me on how I can study and learn these question as I am about 2-3 grade points under where I want to be. Thanks.
  2. Hello people, I know I will sound crazy/weird, but is it possible to self-study HL mathematics? My school does not teach the HL math, and so I am 'stuck' with SL. I really enjoy maths and I am quite pretty good at it. Also, I want to be a chemical engineer, so HL Chem, Phys, and Math are highly recommended. I am already doing HL Chem and Phys, which is satisfactory for most of the universities, but I really feel like I should also do HL Math. Thank you for your answers
  3. Hi, I am going into IB for the 2018-2019 school year. I have a general idea of what I want my course to be, HL Chem HL Bio HL Lang/Lit HL Geography SL Math SL Spanish My main concern is SL Math, currently I am in Honors PreCalculus and I hear that a good part of SL Math will be what I learned this year in HPC. I am on the fence for math, I want to do HL, but I also want to double on science and keep geography to raise my grade. For the future, I want to go to Medical School, so I think the double science is important. I wonder what you guys think about my current plan and your plan. Thanks!
  4. Hello, I am looking to study civil engineering (and eventually environmental engineering) in Germany (no specific university). I currently take high level physics, ITGS and mathematics in IB1. However, I am not the best at the type of math I am studying and as a result I got a mid-4 on my mid term exam. On the first term I got a 6/7. Although these grades seem sufficient, I personally struggle a lot with the material and know my situation is only going to deteriorate as material becomes extensive and more difficult. I would like to ask if high level mathematics is absolutely necessary in most German universities for engineering, because, after looking at standard level math material, I am sure I can get a minimum of a 6 in standard math. Dropping high math would also allow me to focus more on my sciences, high physics and standard chemistry (high chemistry after dropping high math). So I would much rather get high grades in standard math than struggle and possibly fail high math, but if I have to take it then I will do my best to achieve a good grade. I did some research already but did not find such details. I did find that a 37 in the IB is the minimum recommended grade for most universities, and I doubt this will be possible for me in high level math. 1a) Does anyone know if HL math is required for engineering in German universities? 1b) If so, what is the minimum grade? 2a) What is a recommended/suggested grade to get for the end of IB1 for engineering? It would be nice to have a known minimum to exceed. Thank you for your time!
  5. Hey, so I just made my choices for DP. HL: Math, Physics, Chemistry SL: English lang & Lit, Biology, Dutch self taught. I have a strong background in all the subjects and I need most subjects for university. But....... Did I seriously just kill myself? I mean will I have to stay up until 4am every single night? Is it even doable? Peace out!!
  6. hey, (English is not my first language so excuse the poor grammar, but I'm sure most people would get what I'm saying here) So I think I am in trouble. I've tried for the past 5 months to solve and understand this issue. Let me tell you the whole story right from the beginning, so I enrolled into IB this year with only two GCSEs in my hand both of which I managed to screw up, D in business and B in math. Now I know I may seem stupid with those grades but I've never cared of school and studies till now and these past 5 months I've been completely reformed. I was forced to be in MATH STUDIES, but I knew I what I wanted to do in the future and that was to be an engineer. So I worked my ass off and got to HIGHER LEVEL MATH through self-studying their topics by myself and taking their monthly tests and ****ing proved the school I wasn't a donkey. After all that, I was happy I got in and satisfied with myself ( this could be an inspirational story to those who think they're dumb just cuz they did badly in one test), but my troubles didn't end there. After some surfing on uni applications for engineering, they all seem to require Math HL and PHYSICS HL!! Ok look I love physics I wish I could do HL but I'm just too far into the school year for them to accept me to join that class. I'm in physics SL btw so there might be a chance they'll accept me? I don't know tbh and its really bugging me. I looked at the difference between HL and SL physics and there is are 4 topics apart. Like srsly I don't get accepted due to not studying 4 chapters? Ok so I've heard of foundation year, but that's a total waste of my time for not doing 4 topics of physics! I'm however prepared for it if there is no option. Also this new school I'm in looks at my GCSE grades and uses them to place me in the right classes, like **** off, Math studies to Math Higher level. Anyways I came to this site for help from people and to see if anyone is in a similar situation as I am. So if u guys have any advice for me and stuff pls do say I really need to solve this issue quickly.
  7. Hi, I am currently an MYP student and the time to choose my subjects for next year is coming up so I just wanted some advice on what people thought of my choices and whether I'm biting off more than I can chew. For background knowledge about my subject choices, I'm aiming to get into a CS college. HL - Math, Physics, Computer Science SL - English, Spanish, ESS I know that chemistry is traditionally a subject for CS but I'm personally very bad with the subject and I've heard that HL and SL chem are quite difficult, and considering the fact that my HL's are already quite rigorous on their own, I wasn't sure if it was the best idea to add chem to the workload. I'm also not really sure about ESS yet, I want to take either ESS or a humanities subject that won't be as demanding as some of the other options. So I'm just wondering whether my subject choices are cohesive and whether I should be taking chem or maybe switching out ESS for a humanities subject? Thanks for reading.
  8. Hi everyone! I have a lot of free time on my hands these days, and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for Math textbooks, websites or study guides that follow the grade 9 Ib curriculum? I wanted to see what subjects I haven't studied yet and which ones I'll have an easy time with. It'd be cool if you even name the textbook you used..... Tips for other subjects are appreciated too! Thank you!
  9. Hi, I'm on the fence about a few of my IB courses. I want to major in Psychology and attend an Ivy League Law school after I graduate. I wanted to do History but our school, unfortunately, doesn't offer it. I'm currently in grade 10 Chemistry and have an A-plus; moreover, I'll be doing grade 10 Biology next semester. Apart from the fact that I like Biology, I believe that taking that course will make me appear to be a more well-rounded student who is good at both sciences and social sciences. I've never taken Psychology or Business classes before; however, I'm interested in them, especially Psychology. Option 1: HL: English, Psychology, Biology SL: French, Math, Business and Management Option 2: HL: English, Psychology, Business and Management SL: French, Math, Environmental Systems and Societies Option 3: HL: English, Psychology, Business and Management SL: French, Math, Biology
  10. Hey guys! So I had an idea about my math IA and discussed it with my teacher who seemed to like it but I still have some concerns. My idea is essentially modelling newtons cooling curve and then use calculus to turn that curve into a linear equation and use linear regression and squares to find the line of best fit however I feel that the idea is not complex enough and does not go "beyond" the HL syllabus as I have seen with some other IAs
  11. Okay so basically, I am doing an I.A on predicting the price of Ethereum, a crytocurrency, in 2018. It is very much like predicting a share price of a stock market, and I am having trouble with what to do with my data. I don't know how to use standard deviation and other things to draw conclusions, or even know how to make a normal distribution out of this. Please help

  14. Im a student in Sweden with the subjects; English A HL Economics HL History HL Math SL Swedish A SL ESS SL I'm very sure that I want to apply to an University in the UK, and study Economics. A school I'm very keen on is LSe (London School of Political and Economical Science). Courses of my interest; BSc Philosphy and Economics BSc Economics BSc Econometrics and Mathematical Economics They generally require International Baccalaureate: Diploma with 38 points including 7 6 6 at Higher level, including 7 in Mathematics Do they mean that it's a must to have a 7 in Math HL, or does a 7 in Math SL suffice? IF that's the case, is there any way to take an A exam (UK) in Maths? (My school doesn't offer Math HL)
  15. So, recently I'm already starting my Mathematics SL internal assessment. I have chosen to do modelling. My topic is dealing with the modelling of Carbon dioxide concentration produced by yeast over a period of time. I chose this topic because I'm a Bio student as well. Unfortunately, I'm assuming it's not enough to get a high score to just find the equation to the graph right? I'm really desperate and not sure what else to do. My Maths teacher is already asking for the draft and I'm lost right now. Please help, thank you very much.
  16. Hello! I am a French student doing the IB and I am doing a survey to complete my math studies IA. I would really appreciate it if you could take the time to answer my survey. Thank you, Thibault
  17. HI everyone! I'm currently working on my math studies IA and I would really appreciate it if you guys could answer a couple of questions for the data collection! Thank you!!! (it's in both english and french)
  18. Hey guys, Could someone pls give me feedback on the courses I have chosen for the DP programme. I want to go into the med field. My school doesn't offer both sci at HL. Without further ado this is what I'm thinking of taking: Hl Chem, Sl Bio, Sl French(mandatory), Hl Lang & Lit (mandatory), Sl Math, Hl History
  19. hey guys, is it a good idea for me to do the laplace transform for my Math HL IA? I'll base it on simple harmonic motion of bungee jumping, and I need your feedbacks whether this is a good topic or not. There will be some out of the syllabus stuff, but it involves integration by parts, algebra and some basic stuff. I'm displaying the concept in an amateur way. Thoughts?
  20. I am a year 1 student and just covered 4 chapters in the book, but my teacher told us to do our IA already without telling us how to do it. So I just did my presentation before winter break about the Fibonacci Sequence and the teacher told me to change it since it's overdone. However, since we haven't covered much I was worried about my current level and what I can do for IA. Is there any Math IA topics to avoid other than the Golden Ratio? I was thinking of investigating the math in Islamic art because I am interested in photography and art. The other topic I'm contemplating is math in bridge building. Thank you!
  21. Hey future ib colleagues, I’m the next victim of IB! Its that time in my life where I actually have to think about what I want to be in life. I HAVE NO IDEA. Teachers are commanding (I’m over exaggerating a bit) subject choices for IB. I chose subjects that interested me other than actually dying and trying to figure out what career I want. Here it is: Higher level: Chemistry Arabic Psychology Standard level: Math English Physics can people who took these topics give me advice? Also what career can I get out of these choices??? Help!!!!
  22. Hi guys, So my friend is deciding to replicate an old IB math exploration. I was against it but she said it wouldn't matter. The old ib exploration scored a high grade and it was on motion. She's gonna do motion too in another sport similar to the previous one with her own data though. Same format and general ideas and calculations throughout but again, her own data. Would this count as plagiarism? Also, the old IA didn't get sampled. It got 20/20 in 2014. Would this be detected on turnitin? Basically it's a complete replication of what was found in the IA using different numbers and different wording, just the same format and order and ideas.
  23. My math class has been assigned our IA's this past month. I'm wondering what kind of math processes would fit my topic best. the question is "Is there a correlation between number of drunk teen drivers and the total number of alcohol related crashes?" Although I'm not even sure if correlation would fit this best. I have to have the math portion of my IA done Wednesday so I'd really appreciate some helpful feedback.
  24. Dear Sir's/ Madam, I am currently struggling to derive a suitable Math IA topic for my Math Sl course. My teachers say choose something personal, that interests you. I am very interested in language and literature. Are there any Math IA topics that are associated with language and literature? Thank you in advance.
  25. Long Post I am in Year 1 taking Mathematics as my subject for the extended essay. Initially i decided to use rotation of conic sections as my topic for my EE but i decided to change my topic again right before my IRS is needed (bc i dont feel motivated anymore on the old topic). Now, i am still trying to think of a new topic so that i can start writing next year. So far i read a Sample EE that garnered 32/36 points. It is about optimizing the distance of the kick of a ball from the conversion point to the try line in rugby considering only the plane parallel to the ground. The EE was easy to understand and as it simply defined the diagram and applied trigonometry, functions, and calculus(derivative) to look for the optimal distance and angle. Along with this method, he also used Circle theorems to achieve the same result. This EE kind of inspired me because it is simple yet his investigation is profound and he had a lot to discuss. Because of this, i thought of switching to the topic of applying maths in sports. One of my considerations is soccer or football as it is closely related to rugby as well as ice hockey since it doesnt deal much with gravity, but alas i dont play soccer, football, or ice hockey so it may not benefit me to look into this (but i am willing to look into these if it is simpler) Another one is table tennis where i thought of looking into the finding the range of angles wherein when hitting the ball, it would land and the maximum location(edges of the table) or near the net. One problem i encountered with this problem is that there are multiple variables regarding defining where the farthest and shortest trajectory of the ball with respect to the racket, how i hit the ball: angles along x and y, position of ball on the table, height where i hit the ball, gravity, spin on the ball, velocity etc. Last problem is how i will pattern this as a math EE as physics concepts are used here as well (projectile motions, angle of incidences etc). in short, id like to ask your insights and possible remedies to my problem on 1. Concepts in sports where i can apply mathematics 2. How to deal with the plethora of variables that can be seen in the topic 3. math concepts i can use to tackle it the table tennis problem 4. how to tackle the physics here mathematically, any advice Hope you guys can help, im sorry for the long backstory and the very demanding questions.
