  1. Hey everyone, I'm an 11. grade IB student with higher level subjects English, Bio, and Music. I really don't know how to study Bio and Music, because I came late to this school year, which is the reason why I've some gaps. Because of that, I've to catch up about 1.5 semesters on my own and I really don't know how to do it. Is someone here who has the same HL subjects and can recommend some study books or some useful tips? Thank you for every useful answer!

  3. I want to do my IA on music (maybe modelling curve using chords) as I am a violinst and a struggling IB student. My interest in both maths HL Calculus and music has bought me till here to do a IA on it. But as of now I am lost about how to start and then go on. And how far is calculus involved and will the IA be a success. I have no idea how to look into this topic and what should I apply it to could I get any advice, resources or any procedures? Please clear my confussions.(much needed of surviving IB🙄)... Thank You!!
  4. Would composing a few songs as well as playing covers of other songs for a charity concert be a good Creativity + Service CAS Project?
  5. Hi everyone, I am struggling to find sources for my EE, they are either too expensive or unreliable. Especially when I am trying to find sheet music for a song. For example, I am trying to find a full version of "I'm Forest...Forest Gump" sheet music by Alan Silvestir but all I could find is sheet music for piano only. If I want full versions of every instrument(just like when you do an analysis on a classical score), where can I find them. Free ones would be great! Thank you guys

    IBHL Physics IA

I know there are tons of posts on here like this but can anyone help me like expand my IA idea? I'm in HL physics and maannnn am I bad at it but I'm pretty good at music (violin) so I had planned to do some kind of exploration on standing waves on string/ in tubes using my violin and my large set of boomwhackers, but I'm not sure what exactly I could explore to get 10 reasonable pages out of that. I was going to explore like how the distance between adjacent notes on the fingerboard gets smaller the higher you go up the fingerboard, but that's probably not 10 pages worth of info, so can you think of like any ways I could talk about standing waves, something about waves on violin strings, waves through open-ended or open-closed tubes (the boomwhackers) that could all somehow fit under one research question and also contain enough info to write about 10 pages (including graphs and tables and diagrams and such) about?

  9. Hello, So to start I wanted to preface with the fact that I really wanted to do my extended essay in music since its one of the only subjects I'm passionate about. I am a musician and I have taken music appreciation at my local community college and am currently in music composition SL. As far as the topic of the EE goes I really wanted to do a comparison of modern pop song's lawsuits. In the essay, I would do an in-depth analysis of the compositional and theoretical aspects in the section of two pieces of music where one was supposedly plagiarized from the other. I would then compare the two pieces and come to a conclusion on whether the lawsuit was accurate, pulling from my knowledge of music history to see if the music was plagiarized. An example question would be: "to what extent was Ed Sheeran's Thinking Out Loud a copy of Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get it on and was a lawsuit warranted?" Does this stray too far from the music topic? and is it too specific? I would appreciate any help in how to approach or change my topic
  10. Hey guys, so I was thinking about doing a Music EE but I'm not really sure how to start? I have suggested to my supervisor that I wanted to potentially analyse the variations of the main theme from Kingdom Hearts but I think one of the biggest issues is that I will most likely have to notate the scores myself. I've come up with some other questions that I could potentially look at if I still decide I want to analyse Kingdom Hearts: 1. To what extent does the music of Kingdom hearts incorporate Japanese culture? 2. In what ways are the themes of kingdom hearts video games expressed through the music? 3. To what extent does the music of Kingdom hearts owe influence to the music of other composers? 4. To what extent are Shimomura’s compositions in Kingdom Hearts original? But I'm not sure what to do... Should I find a completely different aspect of music to look at instead?
  11. I need a to form a "research question" for my EE, I just don't know what kind of question. I know for my EE I want to analyze either Debussy's string quartet and Ravel's string quartet (based on debussy's) or just Debussy's alone, but how do you make a question out of that? I have something along the lines of "To what extent did Debussy's String Quartet affect the structure and content of Ravel's string quartet" or something like that but I feel like that isn't like... IB enough. Like AP focuses more on music theory specifically but Ib music focuses more on analyzing the context, style, and feeling of music rather than the technical aspects of it, and I feel like that research question doesn't encourage enough analysis of that. Any other suggestions?
  12. Hello all. I'm in the search for good quality student model woodwind instruments for the growing music program in my school. One of the biggest problems has been the type of glue used for the joint corks on the clarinets. They have not held up to the hot tropical weather. Any suggestions are more than welcomed. Thanks in advance. -Emanuel
  13. The name of the game is simple: Put on your Pandora, your Spotify, your Itunes, whatever you have, and write the name of the song in your comment with the words "In my pants" at the end of it. I'll go first... All The Small Things in my pants.
  14. I’m currently having to choose my subjects for next year and am having trouble understanding what standard level creating is for music. I don’t want to focus on preforming as I am not amazing at it but rather composition as I actually do well at it and enjoy it. Could someone please tell me if in SLC I need to preform.

    Song choices

For my MLI, is it okay if I pick songs that are from Italy and Russia, or are they too close to each other? Thanks.
  16. So, I’m case there’s any metalheads here, I decided to share this with the community: It is a music album I made taking the instrumental part of famous metal songs and singing over them, though the main creativity part lies on the invented IB-themed lyrics. Mostly made it for fun, as I’m a terrible singer and my CAS profile was already pretty complete, but hell, it is metal and it is about the IB, there’s nothing better to focus on studying the finals! Share it with your classmates if you want to cause a good deal of laughing, some of the songs I made are really terrible (Studying till Starvation or Time to Change) while others are actually listenable (Slaves of the IB or The Final Exams) and they actually intend to tell a story most of us know, the path an IB student has to go through, the many difficulties he faces and the way he changes. I’ll be updating the descriptions with the lyrics, already put them in the first two, and would love to hear what you guys think, I really don’t care if you criticise them because I already know they’re bad, but still I’m interested to know what’s your opinion on them seeing most of the songs I’ve heard about the IB are rap, pop or other terrible genres of music... HAIL METAL \m/!
  17. Hey all, Currently enrolled in the IB Program, I am still undecided on two subjects that I wish to pursue: engineering and medicine. Leaning more towards the medical field, I had chosen my courses mainly based on that decision; however, I am concerned about the amount of stress it might bring during my junior and senior year. My selected courses include: HL Math, HL English Lang. & Lit., HL Chem, HL Bio, SL Psych, and SL Mandarin Ab Initio My concerns include what subjects are required to enroll in a medical program in the United States or the United Kingdom (mainly for HL), and whether switching one of my HL sciences to SL Music would bring about any concerns, and if not, which HL science to pursue.
  18. Hey! So, for my Music Links investigation rough draft, my teacher marked me really low, and I really want at least a 5 or 6 on it, please help me... What are some tips to get a higher grade in the MLI? I tried to be as detailed as possible, help ASAP
  19. I am currently working on my Extended Essay and I am writing about music but as I was looking over my previous question I was not sure if it was something I could write about. My school is very new to IB, therefore, students, such as myself, don't really know what we are doing. To tell you the truth, I have been playing trumpet for about 6 years but I'm not that much experienced in music theory. I chose this because I thought I would love it but it proved to be stressful. I really don't know what to write at the moment so it would be a great help if anyone could help me or give me an idea of what I should write. I did some research and some people said that we had to analyze music pieces. I looked over examples but I am still quite confused. Please, any advice and ideas would be great. Thank you.
  20. So to start this off, my school is new to IB and my class are the first group to go through this IB system. And as of now we are starting to work on the extended essay part of our diploma. I have chosen music as my topic but since my school is new to IB and so is my supervisor, I am not entirely sure what to write about and I am not sure if he does either. Actually I am sort of lying, I sort of do know but I am not sure if it is really up to IB's standards. Here is what my advisor suggested. "How was music portrayed in Shakespeare's plays during the renaissance era?" (I hope you understand what I am trying to say) I'm not sure if it is up to the standards of the music portion in the extended essay. Although I hope I can settle with this question, I just need some advice on it and if it is good enough to write about. All is appreciated, thank you.
  21. Hey everyone, I've noticed that there is a lack of Theater Arts students on this website and I struggle to find help and advice for my Theater class. Today I decided to put that behind me considering I have been through a lot during my theater journey and decided it would be easier for me to just create a forum for the new Theater Arts students from 2016 onward. This forum will be a discussion point for everything Theater based from the Nov 2016 session and for the years to come (unless they change the syllabus again). Please feel free to ask me any questions that might concern you about the Theater Arts course as I am graduating this November so I've gone through the ups and the downs of being a Theater student.
  22. Hi! Please help me! I want to do my Math IA on something involving Korea and/or K-pop!!!!! I have no idea if I am allowed though to use as I'm not even sure where to find info for!
  23. I am trying to do a Math HL calculus IA on the flute and my outline is due in two days. I started by measuring the distance to the first open hole for each note fingering and graphing it on the x axis with frequency of the notes on the y axis. This gave me a quadratic function that can be differentiated to find the change in frequency with respect to distance (df/dD). I was hoping the differentiation would be a bit complicated but it's just the power rule since I got a quadratic. I am now trying to use related rates to find another rate of change, but I can't think of one that would be relevant. I was thinking of doing something with the volume of air required in relation to the distance to the first hole: dV/dD = dV/df x df/dD However, this would be way too simple. The variables I could change include length of the tube, volume of air, embouchure size, air speed and lung capacity. If anyone can suggest a way to salvage this idea, I would appreciate it. If I can't find a way to make this work I will probably cry myself to sleep because it's the only semi-good idea I've had.
  24. I want to get a practice IB Music Listening Paper from the IB store, but before I do, I would like to know this: will they also allow me to download the corresponding music extracts in audio files? I know that for the exams they give you discs there (and I think they are moving to a computer-based system of audio files), but I would just like to know if I will be receiving such audio files in any format before I choose to pay for a practice paper. Thanks in advance!
  25. Hello all! Is there any place I can find the new IB Music guide? The only one I can find is from 2011, and I know that one is outdated because in it they describe the structure of the old exam rather than the new one. Any place I can find the updated one? Thanks!
