  2. Hello, I'm new to this whole website so I'm not really sure how it works here. But anyways, I've got a question: What's the best way to practice analysing, comparing and contrasting two texts? Recently I realised that I have this issue with me where I'm not able to think quickly or make sense when I write on paper (my sentences are always jumbled up, disorganised). I perform great with assessment tasks but writing is a bit of difficulty. Conventionally, I use my laptop to write the answers to the questions then transfer it to my paper, however I won't be allowed to do this during the actual exams, thus I'm quite nervous about my ability to perform an excellent result. So my only option is to start practicing from now, I want to be able to get used to it and hopefully improve by the end of next year, I just need some tips on improvement (maybe some past papers I can download to practice on them), so I was hoping if you guys could help me thanks!
  3. Hi, its my first time writing here, so i don't really know how this works. Its my first year of IB and in two weeks i have my mid terms. I really want to prepare for my exams and i tried to google some Paper 3 economics practice questions, however, i couldn't find any. I already did all the questions that cover the material we did in class until now (demand and supply, equilibrium, elasticity), but there were only three questions and i feel its not enough. I really struggle with paper 3, i feel like paper 1 its easier because you can explain your ideas more clearly. So my question for you is, where could i find some more practice? If you have some practice worksheets, please help me

Im currently trying to revise for my predicted grade exams, and its really taking its toll on me My teacher refuses to give us ANY past paper questions, as she says that "there are too little of them and we need to choose what to put in the exam". I do understand what she means, but I really want to test myself with questions and do well! I can't find any online either. If any of you have any access/websites which have past paper questions that you could share, i love you!

  9. Hi guys, I would like to ask for some help, I am trying to plan different essays for different topics. I am having trouble with the topic comparing the 1905, February 1917 and October 1917 revolutions. The basic idea i have is that 1905 wasnt much of a revolution, more of an outcry for change and some facts, I would include are like the sailors did revolt like at Kronstadt but the army remained loyal and it wasnt organised (and other facts along the same line) The February 1917 revolution i would say isnt organised but more of an outcry as excacerbated by WW1 and poverty and food and fuel shortages and both the army and navy revolted (unlike 1905 where it was only the navy) etc. The October revolution was organised, included strategy and organisation by the Bolsheviks and takeover of government by the Bolsheviks although other parties were basically confined to the Soviet. I would like to ask if anyone has other ideas, facts or arguments to put forward concerning the comparison of the three different revolution.

  16. Hi, so I'm really worried, because I've taken English HL, and we NEVER do anything in class. The teacher just comes in and just stares at us. Her lessons (if you could even call them that) are so confusing, because we just seem to be "discussing" random topics that change every class.   18. hi guys, my practice tok essay is below. i would appreciate your feedback Question: The vocabulary we know does more than communicate our knowledge; it shapes what we can know. Evaluate this claim with reference to different areas of knowledge. As with every explanation, commentary or thinking exercise, it is always easier to define certain expressions to fully understand the claim at hand. The claim mentions the words: vocabulary, communicate and knowledge, all of which are important to understand this evaluation. Vocabulary are the words that a certain person is in command of, whether verbal or physical. This means the words that one uses, or as a closer example, the words on this very page are part of the authors vocabulary. This term normally goes hand in hand with communication, as communication; which is the act of conversing with another person, is worthless without the proper vocabulary. Lastly, the claim mentions the ominous word knowledge: This term is defined as the state or the fact of knowing. Interestingly enough, all three concepts being knowledge, communication and vocabulary are put into one claim: Namely that vocabulary we use isn’t only a bridge towards successful communication for others, but it also molds what we can know. This evaluative text first examines what effect and why the word “can” is present in the above claim and later changes its foci onto whether or not our vocabulary limits our understanding of people and communication with them. One small inconsistency that one may notice from reading the claim is that the word “can” is used in the sentence “it shapes what we can know”. Although this minor word seems to be negligible, its presence is monstrous, as to be proven now. The word “can” may make a large difference in a sentence and may even change the sentence entirely. For example examine the difference between these two sentences: “The effects of drugs can reduce situational awareness.” “The effects of drugs reduce situational awareness”. Technically speaking, the only difference between these two sentences is one word; “can”. However, if one examines both sentences from a grammatical point of view, one receives two different meanings. The first sentence is considered to be a possibility, whereas its counterpart is considered to be a proven fact. Even though this small diversion into grammar on first glance has nothing to do with the claim itself, on second inspection the presence of the small word “can” would actually completely change the claim .The presence of the word “can” in the claim above actually has a restrictive effect. Personally, a feel of restriction is shown when one says “it shapes what we can know”. On the other hand if this three letter word was not present in the question, the sentence would be “it shapes what we know”. Here, unlike before, due to the non-presence of the word “can” the sentence promotes a much less restrictive nuance, as well as presents the reader of the above claim with the idea that he is capable of telling all his knowledge, instead of only the knowledge he “can” i.e. is capable of telling. In a nutshell, the word “can” actually stands for a barrier between a restrictive and non-restrictive or free sentence meanings. Having explained the entire notion of the effect the word “can” could have on a sentence, the actual task was to examine whether or not our vocabulary shapes what we know. The most efficient way to test this statement’s validity would be to see how easily it can be disproved. In other words, the claim should be considered to be correct if our vocabulary changes over our life, along with the amount and quality at which we communicate. At birth, and the few years after this event, we cannot communicate at all. It is only several years after we live on this earth that we commence to utter distinct vowels, and a much longer time period is needed to start communicating with our peers. However, even then we still rely on very basic grammar and very basic logic to help us through life, and it is only as we become educated, or in other words we become more developed, that our vocabulary both in quantity and quality increases. Because of the fact that our vocabulary becomes more numerous, this proves the fact that vocabulary can shape what we know, as through age we are more prone to successfully communicating what we mean and explaining what we know. Overall, one can see that the claim must be correct, as through age and by education, we learn how to express ourselves better, thereby giving ourselves the ability to first of all communicate better with others, but to more importantly show how explicit we can express ourselves to prove what we know. An example of how education teaches us vocabulary, thereby shaping what we know can be found amidst English Grammar, namely in phrasal verbs. For instance if a non native English speaker hears the verb “call”, he will think of someone phoning another person on their phone or yelling their name, as he is not as fluent in English. However, if the word “off” Is added behind the word “call”, the entity becomes the verb “to call off”, which in this example has nothing to do with a phone, but instead means to “cancel”. If the non native English speaker has not been educated in this aspect of phrasal verbs, he or she will be limited in the ways they know, as their vocabulary has not reached a sufficient measure to understand this verb. Another way to prove the claim about vocabulary shaping what we know, can be found in several of the areas of knowing, for example in mathematics. As bizarre as it sounds, mathematics, even though it does not require any knowledge of language expressions, it still needs its own vocabulary in order to define, calculate or express any number of terms or results found. A prime example can be found in everyday algebra in primary schools. The correct vocabulary is so important (even in math!) because without it, we could not express even the most basic of calculations, or even if we could express what we meant, because of the lack of vocabulary, our interlocutor would not be able to understand what we would mean, as here again his vocabulary would be different or even non-existent. We must keep in mind that the only reason we cannot communicate with other people is because we have no vocabulary, and therefore have no way to shape what we know, regardless if it is correct or not. Another area of knowledge that can relate to these phenomena is history, as it relies heavily on the passing on through information, either by vocal or written accounts, to “create” it. However, knowing that if we had no vocabulary to express ourselves and then because of this fact no way of communicating, it would be quite impossible to speak or communicate, and so history itself would have technically never happened, as there would be no verbal or written accounts to record the events that happened. A historic event that tells of the confusion that a lack of vocabulary/lack of communication brings would be the events occurring at the tower of Babe[1]l: Humanity, being united under one language, decided to be equal with God and so decided to build an enormous tower to reach the Heavens. God however, confused each builders tongue, so that they could not understand each other’s vocabulary and along with that, each others language as they could not convey what they knew about the tower (building plans and brick laying techniques for instance). This lead to chaos, and the tower was never finished. One can therefore say that vocabulary not only helps with communication, but is also crucial to understanding everyone around us. In conclusion, I not only agree with the claim that the vocabulary we know does more than communicate our knowledge as well as shapes what we can know, but I would also go further saying that vocabulary is maybe one of the most fundamental building blocks for society and progress itself. I felt like I was understanding everything in class but when my teacher gave us these questions, I had a panic attack because I don't even know where to start.
