  1. Hi everyone! Ok so, my original Extended Essay research question was "How are the common themes of betrayal and love portrayed differently in the Shakespearean comedy “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” when compared to the tragedy “King Lear.” However, my adviser said that it was too narrow for an EE and I should compare two different playwrights instead. I'm not really interested in going outside of Shakespeare, so I have decided to completely change my topic. I'm still sticking to English Literature, but I think I'm leaning towards novels instead. This is where I need help. I really want to do something with "A Thousand Splendid Suns" since it's a beautiful book, relates to me personally, and I haven't seen it used in any Extended Essays so far. Besides that, I don't really know which direction I should go in. A little guidance or some suggestions would be helpful and much appreciated. Also, if my original topic could be somehow be salvaged, I'd be incredibly grateful for that. Thank you so much! Update: I did some research and I'm considering maybe comparing "A Thousand Splendid Suns" with "The Bastard of Istanbul." Lemme know what you think! Thanks!
  2. Hi, Im having trouble deciding exactly what my ee research question is. Im doing one comparing the giver and the handmaidens's tale and looking at what characterizes dystopian novel such as these, is that a good enough reasearch question or too broad? I separated my essay into looking at: What is supposed to be the ideal? Who is in charge(benefiting)? here i also looked at how they ruled with both fear or respect and how they contrasted Who is paying (losing)? Who tries to stop it? And then my teacher suggested I look at what this says about us, but I fear this may be cutting it too close to the word limit. In general, if you have any suggestions or ideas, I'd be happy to hear them!
  3. My research question is What is the significant effect of pH in irrigation solutions in the allometric relationship of growth in Raphanus raphanistrum subsp. Sativus (Radish)? How do I change question so that it is more EE relevant? (deeper, more insightful, original) My teacher thinks that it is like an IA Topic however, it can be changed to make it more significant to analyze, as how EE should be. Please help! Thank you
  4. I plan to do my Extended Essay on Economics, specifically price discrimination. Please share your thoughts on my Research Question and suggest how I can make it better.RQ : To what extent does the price discrimination that exists in the Cafes in Bukit Jelutong affects the consumer’s demand?I’ve noticed that the local Cafes where I live in, has a common practice of price discrimination for either students through student discounts or happy hours where any meals bought at a specific time is offered at a lower price. Being someone who enjoys these price discrimination, it has made me wonder how effective it actually is. Do these cafes actually experience higher customer traffic when such price discrimination is implemented? I plan to test this through analyzing whether the price discrimination leads to higher demand of the good.
  5. I have around 3 weeks until I need to turn in my final draft of my extended essay, and I am just now starting. I know I shouldn't have procrastinated, but I did and now I have to deal with the consequences. Anyways, I know my topic will be on Dirty Realism (a style of writing that depicts the more mundane aspects of ordinary life), and I know that I will include writers like Richard Wright and Tobias Wolff in my essay. Now what I don't know is my research question. I have two in mind: 1. How does Richard Wright and Tobias Wolff use Dirty Realism in their works? 2. What is the role of Dirty Realism in Richard Wright and Tobias Wolff's works? Are either of these any good? And if not, what changes should I make to these questions?
  6. Hi! For my extended essay, I wanted to write a non-experiment-based research paper on clostridium difficile colitis (a disease in the colon caused by bacteria). I want to talk about the etiology and epidemiology, method of transmission, and growth/reproduction of bacteria in my essay. Does anyone have a good idea on a research question I can use? I'm not sure on how to create a research question about a disease, especially since I am not conducting an experiment. Thank you:)
  7. Is this research question focused/good enough? I've had a lot of trouble with it. How is the changing women's ideal beauty image over the later half of the 20th century reflective upon American social culture? How should I word this not so awkwardly? And is it solid and focused enough to write 4000 words on? I want to write about how different cultural effects have had on the ideal beauty image and how that image is a product of the social/political times. This would make this investigation a theoretical study right? Because I am mostly looking at secondary sources and looking at each era to see what social movements influenced the ideal image of then. I'm not taking this course so I'm worried I will do mediocre on it. How should I approach this? ANY ADVICE PLEASE!
  8. Hi i am working on my english ee and i was wondering if this sounds like a strong enough research question to start out with? How does Ken Kesey use the fog motif and indirect characterization of the secondary characters in the novel One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest to demonstrate that everyone has a false perception of reality? thanks
  9. Hello, For my school, it is required to put in two EE proposals as they need to sort out the teachers to the students. I currently have come up with an RQ for my first choice which is visual arts but haven't managed to get it approved as I need to draw a conclusion but I have no clue what to write my EE about, I have yet to consult my business teacher but I think I'm leaning towards looking at e-commerce. Does anyone have any recommended RQ? Should I look at the company my dad works for, its a company that deals with taxes and financial stuff. If anyone has anything that could help, just a 2 minute answer would help. Thank you
  10. Hi, I am trying to come up with an EE topic (I am already pretty late on this whole EE thing) and the only subject left for me to do it in is economics I came up with the idea of producing my EE around the topic of books and ebooks, mostly because an uncle of mine actually runs a book distribution company and can help me a lot in finding info. My research question right now is: "To what extent did the introduction of e-books in affect the demand and sales for paperback books in the São Paulo region of Brazil?". I live in São Paulo, Brazil, by the way... While I think this might be pretty viable, it has a few problems as the demand and sales for books and e-books is constantly changing everywhere, for many reasons, especially now in the economic mess Brazil is. Because of this, I think it would be very hard to form a cause-and-effect relationship between the books and e-books. Also, according to this uncle of mine, who knows quite a bit about the topic, it would be hard to find information regarding specific sales and the effects of e-books in any one city or region of Brazil, but finding info for the whole country might be possible. As I mentioned, this topic seemed good at first but now presents many practical problems. It would be nice to be able to stick to the whole books theme, but if it's not possible, I will switch to another topic. Anyhow, does anyone have any suggestions, ideas or anything to say on the topic? Anything would be useful really, so if you can think of something please send it my way! Thank you in advance! PS - I've also heard that it might be a good idea to keep my EE focused on microeconomics. Is that true? Thanks again
  11. Hi! Yesterday I found out that my supervisor had gone on vacation, leaving me without any guidance until the middle of August. I wasn't done with my research question (I have myself to blame really) and now can't afford loosing two more weeks withour any reasarch on the specific question. I've come up with 3 research questions concerning the Rwandan genocide (history), I would be very grateful if you could help me. Can I rephrase anything to make it better? Which one do you consider the best option for an EE? Is any of these questions even doable? 1.To what extent was the Rwandan genocide a result of a state plan made by the authorities? 2.To what extent did the propaganda spread by the media in Rwanda lead to the genocide? /Why was the media propaganda before the Rwandan genocide so effective? 3.To what extent was the Rwandan genocide a result of the society build up by the German and Belgian colonization? Thank you in advance!!!!
  12. Hello! I am very interested in F. Scott Fitzgerald and his depiction of the jazz age through his different books. I've read The Great Gatsby & This Side of Paradise. I'm beginning to read The Beautiful & The Damned. Basically, I'm trying to figure out a way to tie all three books into a question. Ideally it would be all three but I can settle for just two books tied together. I know that many say that he has depicted himself within these books & that he has a very specific way of how he perceives and describes women within his novels. Please help me by leading me into the right direction with any advice you can provide me!!
  13. Hello, I've had quite a few problems with narrowing down my History HL IA question on the Tiananmen Square protest and the Singing Revolution. This is what I've got as of now; "How did the public views of communism and the communist rule influence the intentions behind the Tiananmen Square protest compared to the Singing Revolution?". I want it to be focused on the fact that in China they mourned a communist leader whilst in the Balkan states they were rebelling against the communist rule but as said my research question is a bit too big so a bit of help would really be appreciated:) cheers!
  14. I am planning to use "what are the religious origins and aims of ISIS?" for my extended essay, but my teachers were not really sure about it. Should i do it? I am really keen on studying ISIS as an organization but I am not too sure if I can use it as a extended essay topic.
  15. I am doing my extended essay on prenatal maternal stress and its effect on the fetus, but I am not sure that my research question is focused enough, this is what I have so far: To what extent does prenatal maternal stress influence the fetus?
  16. I'm just starting my Extended Essay and I'm comparing and contrasting Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and A Thousand Splendid Suns By Khaled Hosseini. I want to focus on the relationships between the characters in the novels- the relationship between Olanna and Kainene and the relationship between Laila and Mariam. The reason I chose the two novels is because I wanted to specifically focus on female relationships and how they are presented during a time of war (as both books have a pre, during and post war timeline) and how it affects the dynamics of familial relationships. I've been trying to formulate a good research question for this but I can't and I would really like some help on that if anyone is willing.
  17. Hello! So recently I have been struggling to with the Extended Essay research question or topic in general. My supervisor isn't much help tbh, but I think I might have figured it out. Basically I am doing World studies in English and History. I chose immigration to be my global issue and decided to focus on Germany (my local area). This my research question: To what extent did Germans try to push the Turkish guest-workers (immigrants) out of Germany during the time 1960-90s and how was literature used to isolated immigrants? Is it any good? Is it too brought? The thing is I am not sure how I can bring English into this without trying to find a piece of literature and analyse it. Another thing is, a teacher of mine told us to choose the subject that we are going to study later but I don't think I am going into English and Literature even though I would love to do political science, my parents are planning something in Biology, basically science area. But I chose World Studies because I am really interested in global issues and political issues such as mass immigration, or identity politics etc.
  18. My question is: What external factors influence the strategic choices in terms of marketing of Starbucks- Do you think it's narrow enough?- How can I make it more narrow?- Do you think it's appropriate for EE? Thanks in advance
  19. So far I've come up with three different approaches to what I want to work on for my EE; which is western animation. The movies that I have seen potential in for analysis are the ones mentioned in the questions. I need some feedback on which of these is more acceptable for an English Extended Essay (if any) and some suggestions on the wording/scope of them. The first was suggested to me by my adviser. Topic Question South American Settings How are South American settings explored in Postcolonial American Animated Films “The Road To El Dorado” and “Emperor’s New Groove”? Postcolonial Theory To what extent are Ancient World Cultures portrayed accurately in Postcolonial Animated Films “Moana” and “Kubo and The Two Strings”? Character Dynamics To what extent do the main characters in “The Road to El Dorado” and “The Emperor’s New Groove” interact through similar dynamics? Thank you!
  20. Hey guys If possible, could you please let me know if this is a good enough research question for an Extended Essay in Literature? Research Question - How does Cormac McCarthy use the relationship of the man and his son to address themes of morality in his novel The Road? I know there's a lot of meat when it comes to morality in this book, and the relationship of father and son seems to form the centrepiece of it. I'm just not 100% sure if this question will help me fulfil all the requirements for a literature EE. Thank you so much.
  21. Hi guys, I have completed the experiment for my EE on testing the efficiency in blocking bacteria of medical masks of different levels of performance and I wonder how to my research question could look focused and professional? My original research question was simply: How efficient do medical masks of different performance levels prevent infiltration of bacteria? I want to elaborate on it, but any ideas? Thanks.
  22. Hi, My current research question is: To what extent were the social and political British imperialistic influences in China in the 1900’s a responsible factor for the collapse of the Qing Empire? In my essay I want to analyze the social and political influences the British had on China and how those were a responsible factor for the collapse of the qing empire near the end of the imperialistic era. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on both my topic and on how to improve my research question.
  23. Hello, so my supervisor recommended this research question to me: To what extent can microfinancing in the Philippines help women and families escape the poverty trap? I personally think this is way to broad. Help?
  24. Hi, everyone! Thank you so much for taking the time to click on my topic. I'm currently having a major breakdown and anxiety attack (but what's new amongst us, IB students, am I right?) So, anyways, I'm having a hard time coming up with my RQ for my EE. The subject I'm writing it under is Psychology and I take it at HL level. I know that I definitely want my EE to be about the hospitality industry and analyze stress levels in the employees BUT the problem is is that I have no idea how to word it... I've come up with one example like: To what extent are stress levels higher in hospitality employees than in firefighters? I definitely know that I want the question to be a "To what extent" but now I just need to word it properly. I would seriously appreciate any advice THANK YOU SO MUCH x
  25. So my topic I was looking at was the effect of temperature (I may change this factor) on the growth of bacteria (at least 3 different types of bacteria) and comparing these temperatures by using a spectrophotometer to determine optical density so that I am able to construct a growth curve for the varying bacteria at different temps. I was wondering whether this topic was extensive enough for the EE and if anyone had done anything similar in that is this the most efficient and accurate way of monitoring the growth of bacteria with quantitative values. Thank you so much, any advice is appreciated
