  1. Long story short, I did a bio extended essay, messed up the experiment, instead of isolated colonies I got a single weird blob. No data collected. Failed the experiment. Am I allowed to use external data to support my arguments?
  2. I want to study in Hong Kong, and am applying to City Uni of HK, HKU, and HKUST I have a predicted 35 Math HL 4 Phys HL 5 Chem HL 5 Lang lit HL 6 Econ SL 6 Spanish B SL 7 TOK/EE 2 I'm quite undecided on what I want to study, I just want to get into one of these schools. Are there any majors that would make my chances higher, at any of these unis, especially HKUST and HKU? I know that at HKU, a 33 makes an applicant competitive for economics and finance (per their website) Any thoughts?
  3. Hi, Can we use contractions like 'it's', 'I've', etc? I'm doing a Chemistry EE and we need to keep the formal tone, but I'm going over the word limit so I'm hoping contractions will save me. Thanks in advance!
  4. Hey guys, this is my first time using IB Survival and I found out that it is really beneficial for the IB student. My Physics EE revolves around the effect wheels have on the recoil momentum of a potato cannon. RQ: To what extent does the rolling friction of wheels affect the recoil momentum of a potato cannon after launch? I just want your opinion on my research question and my topic, and if you believe it can be improved please let me know. As for the experiment itself, I am planning on building a potato cannon (with and without wheels) and comparing these three things after the launch of the potato: the location of the cannon, the speed of the potato, and the distance the potato traveled. Please let me know if there is a problem with my approach and how it can be improved, it would mean the world to me. Thank you

Hi, everyone. I have some struggles with my ESS IA. I decided to look at the water quality of the lake. I got physicochemical measurements such as DO, Suspended substances, PH, BOD-5, ammonia, and nitrite. My context is to see how this water quality may affect the lake ecosystem. What do you think are the most important indicators? What formulas or evaluations can I use?
  7. hey, so I recently started brainstorming on what I can do for my chemistry IA. I am doing HL chemistry and I am going into the final year of IB. I have somewhat of a basis on what I want to do. I want to do titration, having the acid be hydrochloric acid and using various basic solutions. For the basic solutions, I want to create solutions from some antacids and compare how each antacid works by seeing how much of each is needed for the pH of the acid to reach and maintain a neutral pH. I'm not sure if this is going to work because this idea is still in the works. Any ideas or tips on how I can improve??
  8. So I decided that for my extended essay, I was gonna culture bacteria (e.coli) and check the effect of the pH and the correlation between the pH level and the growth of the bacteria. However, instead of using the quadrant method to spread the bacteria over the plate I just made a continuous pattern as seen in the pic. Can somebody help me count the colonies to check how the pH affected the growth? Thanks, plenty.
  9. Hello, I am finding it difficult to decide which science subjects to choose and would appreciate some help and guidance. First of all, I am not entirely sure what I want to study in the future (perhaps economics, although the sciences really interest me too). That being said, I am sure about studying in the US. I have done a summer course in IB biology (also math which I am fairly well at), also had a brief look at the content that appears in IB physics. I have no prior background in chemistry however. These are my subjects in general: Economics HL English HL Science HL Math SL Ab initio SL Science SL I want to pick 2 science subjects, one at HL respectively SL. 1. How is physics HL? Is it the ‘broadest’ science in terms of future studies? Does it differ largely from SL - is SL in that case quite a bit easier? Easiest / hardest topic? 2. How is chemistry SL? I am not to keen on HL, and have heard that SL is easy. Easiest / hardest topic? How do you study for it? Is it quite mathematical? 3. Lastly, is biology HL much more difficult compared to SL? Is bio SL pretty much the same level as chem SL? In case I take bio and physics - is that a weird combination, from universities perspective? Since the subjects don’t overlap that much at all..btw, which subjects do overlap the most and would this ease study? Here are the combinations I am considering: Physics HL + Biology SL or vice versa Biology HL + Chemistry SL Thanks in advance! Also, please do share any additional insight/your experience with the subjects besides from my questions.
  10. In 10th grade we need to pick our IB courses, and I really want to take ESS. Unfortunately, my school doesn't offer it. Are there any plans to add ESS to the Pamoja site?
  11. I have a chem blog called Chem Is Try. It's both on the ChemNet of the RSC and Blogger (well, I should have put it on WordPress.) The blogger address is aquilinachemistry.blogspot.com. (Feel free to visit it if you like!) The first blog post about the chemistry set was actually recommended by the RSC (I think via ChemNet newsletter last year). The question is...I have not written one entry in the last 4 months. For each of the entry, I would like to think topics that are really compelling, interesting, and informative to write. The brainstorm part takes quite a long time. I have been busy with other chemistry/design/interdisciplinary activities and my academics in the 4 months and haven't written one new post. Now I have 6 entries and some followers on ChemNet. So what to do with my blog? I would like to work more on it after my SATs and maybe promote it to a wider audience. Now I just left the blog on the two websites without promoting them...
  12. Hi all. I really want to switch to computer science HL (i take SL) and drop my physics hl because I am afraid it is too hard for me. I am in my first year of IB, my subjects are English A SL, Arabic B HL, ITGS HL, Physics HL, Computer science SL, Math studies SL. The problem is my school does not teach computer science HL (only sl) so I have to teach myself and I am kind of struggling with it. I scored an A- for computer science and a C+ for physics in my first term exams. How can I plan out lessons? Where can I study from? Are there online courses I can take or something? Any extra tips?
  13. I'm realllllly struggling with my chemistry IA. My experiment was too easy and I'm not finding anything to write about. Anyway, if i get a 3 on this IA and get a 7 on all 3 papers, can I still get a 7 overall in Chemistry SL?? I think the worst I could get on this IA is a 3 but I might be able to do better.
  14. Hey! I am currently working on my SL Biology IA. While analyzing my results, I found two outliers. Now the problem is, the outliers don't greatly impact my result, but they still do affect them. My question is, do I still include these outliers when I am creating my graphs or do I not include them? Thank you
  15. Hi everyone! I've noticed that there is nothing on this website for Social Anthropology so I'd like to start one. If there is anyone else who has this class out there somewhere, please feel free to comment!
  16. Hello all, I would really appreciate any help with this issue. For my CHEM ia I'm really interested in diabetes/ sugar levels and what factors could decrease its presence. I don't know exactly what to do for it, can someone advice me with things that could be related back to ib chemistry?
  17. Just finished my first semester of IB and WOW is this an experience. Definitely rewarding, I feel, but I am worried about my schedule for next semester. I was supposed to take Bio HL as my one science next semester and Art SL this semester, but my Marching Band class this semester was the same block as Art SL (the only time when they offer art) so I was forced to switch into Chem SL next semester. So that means I have bio first block and chem fourth block in the same semester, and science is without a doubt my weakest subject. I talked with my coordinator and she said she thought I would be fine doubling up on science but I would like to know what you all think that have taken these classes? Are they extremely rigorous with tons of homework? Or do they compliment/overlap each other at all in content since they are both natural sciences? Thanks for any insight you can provide!! ~hunter

  19. Heey guys, I have am kinda stuck with my extended essay, I mean I kinda figured out a title: "Determining the acidity level of (insert fruit) and determining which is safer for (insert illness) patients?
  20. Hi, I'd doing my second year(10th Grade) of IGCSE, and next year I will be taking the IB. I am strong in all of the 3 sciences that will be offered at our school, but I can't decide which two to take at HL. Right now I am definitely taking; HL: Maths, Literature, (two sciences) SL: Geography, Language B German For my 'final' decision, I put both physics and biology. This is not final, but I need to change it soon if I would want to. The reason I chose these two is because the physics teachers at our school will guaranteed good ones, however, that will not mean that they are any easier. Can anyone give any advice to choosing sciences that will allow for me to have a lot of options, because I have no idea what I want to study.
  21. i have a topic for my Bio IA which is, the effect of sugar on seed germination. I don't know what seeds i'll be using yet, but i will place them in a container surrounded by cotton buds and will add water every day, with plain water as the constant. I not entirely sure what concentration levels of sugar to use or how to calculate molars. I'm not sure what the results would be. How many seed have germinated? the growth of the seeds? and how it could become meaningful data, e.g. tables, graphs. if anyone has done an IA or prac similar to this or has some knowledge, any input would be greatly appreciated, thank you. Chris Collins.
  22. Hi guys, I've chosen the following IA question "the effects of different concentration of inhibitor on the activity of alpha amylase". Is it a good question or is it too simple. I was thinking of just using some kind of metal solution on it or i was also considering weight loss drugs but i'm not entirely sure yet. Just wanted to know if it's a good topic. Thanks
  23. Im planning to do a SEHS EE next month, so i need some ideas. im very interested in topics related to track and field, but im not really good at choosing topics, so plzzzzzz i need some ideas Quote
  24. Hey guys, So we are just starting our biology IAs and actually my lab proposal was due last week but i've jumped around ideas for a long time and discussed them with my teacher but he doesn't give me any real advice and just tells me to research unlike the chem teacher. So i've finally come up with the idea of the effects on different concentrations on inhibitors on enzymatic activity and was wondering if that was a plausible IA question. I'm bio HL so i'm a bit afraid i might be doing something simple. But the idea is that i use some kind of enzyme and substrate and then add different concentrations of inhibitors (if possible) to find out the reaction rate. I'm thinking of using colorimetry to do this which will give me absorbance over time and that will be my rate. Please inform me if this idea is good or bad because i could really use the criticism, my teacher is really no help anymore (although the lab technician is pretty nice) and i just wanna move forward with this and be assured that i'll get the best mark that i can. Really hoping for a response thanks.
  25. for my ess ia , is it possibly to make up secondary data if it is justified??. i cant find any the data i need for a simpson's diversity index
