  1. I'm taking Biology SL and we're kind of rushing through the syllabus right now, so by next year, we can revise again with the teacher. I'm not really confident with how I'm progressing with Biology as it has never been a subject of interest for me. Currently, it's the breaks and I want to focus on Biology and Languages as much as possible. My friend gave me an Oxford Study Guide for Biology, a summarized version for me to study, saying it's really helpful. So should I just get another notebook for Biology just for studying from only the Guide Book? Any inputs are welcome
  2. What would be the better science for Japanese university (G30 program in general) ESS or CHEM SL is there a business course in this program?? if you have any advice for this program, please comment
  3. Hello everyone! I'm going into the 10th grade this year, and am planning on doing the IB program 11th-12th grade. In the future I am hoping to be a pediatrician, so I was looking online for what IB classes you should take in order for medical school. Most sites said Biology and Chemistry HL. I like chemistry a lot and am hoping to HL in that, but I'm not so sure about biology. So, first of all, would HL biology be necessary for medical school? Also, if I did do HL bio, would it be important to take biology this year too? (Pre-IB) I'm currently signed up to do physics, and I did biology in 8th grade, but I've heard that HL bio is really difficult so I'm wondering if I should take up biology this year to be prepared for when I do IB. Also, considering I want to be a pediatrician, I'm unsure whether physics is actually important or if I should just do biology instead. Thank you!
  4. Going into jr year and class choices are due in a few weeks, please respond and thank you in advance to the ppl that do What sciences should I take and at what level if I wanna go into engineering or medical. Like what would be the best base for college? Also at what level should I take math? ^ 2 HL spots and 1 SL
  5. Long story short, I did a bio extended essay, messed up the experiment, instead of isolated colonies I got a single weird blob. No data collected. Failed the experiment. Am I allowed to use external data to support my arguments?
  6. Grade 10 bio notes for beginners.
  7. Okay, so our biology teacher is a noob and we need help. She doesn't know what she's doing at all. She gives us the same tests that she gives her standard biology classes and we haven't covered the whole book at all. What do I do? I know for a fact that whatever she does won't help. So how do I save myself? What can I do to teach myself one of my least favorite subject? Please help me. I am dying and I don't want to fail.
  8. Hi everyone! I'm going to be studying grade 9 pre-ib at St.Roberts next year, and I was wondering if anyone knows what science textbook is used for the science course? Even if you didn't go there, any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance, Sarvnaz
  9. Does anyone have an example of what an interim reflection for science could be?
  10. Hello, I have to conduct an experiment for my Biology IA and I was thinking it should be about Caffeine. I am a Caffeine intolerant and I would want to make some experiment of "how to reset caffeine tolerance" and to see if its possible. Perhaps I could measure my heart/ pulse rate for 3-4 days and see if there is any difference. Now I really need to now if this idea would work for the Biology IA and I would really appreciate if any of you could suggest how I should write the research question for this experiment in this case. Now first of all, can I do this if I have human consent form ( for myself or for other humans)? Or is there a problem with using this on humans? The thing is I have to conduct this experiment on my own, so please if you have any other suggestions or ideas that I could possible do without the help of an actual Lab, I would truly be thankful for it. (research questions about any topic in human physiology maybe? ) I am an SL Biology student by the way.
  11. Hey! What do the CalTech Admissions people look for in a candidate? How do I maximise my chances of getting in? Any CalTech Alumni here, I would love your advice.
  12. Heey guys, I have am kinda stuck with my extended essay, I mean I kinda figured out a title: "Determining the acidity level of (insert fruit) and determining which is safer for (insert illness) patients?
  13. Hi everyone, So Uni applications are due soon and I'm a bit confused over the IB scores. Mac's Health Sci program (very popular) needs an anticipated IB score of 36 points and average above 90%. Would I still be eligible for admission if I was able to keep my average well over the 90s, but not reach the anticipated score (getting 35 or 34 instead)? If the IB is going to hinder my chances of getting in, is it mandatory to include anticipated IB scores? Just a bit flustered with the system. Thanks.
  14. What subject combination at HL and SL are the best to become an astrophysicist, especially if you are looking at a pretty high level university like UoT?
  15. How strict is the 6-12 page limit for science IA's? Will the moderator just stop reading at 12 pages and pretend like the rest doesn't exist. And do title pages in that page limit?
  16. I want to study in Hong Kong, and am applying to City Uni of HK, HKU, and HKUST I have a predicted 35 Math HL 4 Phys HL 5 Chem HL 5 Lang lit HL 6 Econ SL 6 Spanish B SL 7 TOK/EE 2 I'm quite undecided on what I want to study, I just want to get into one of these schools. Are there any majors that would make my chances higher, at any of these unis, especially HKUST and HKU? I know that at HKU, a 33 makes an applicant competitive for economics and finance (per their website) Any thoughts?
  17. Hi, Can we use contractions like 'it's', 'I've', etc? I'm doing a Chemistry EE and we need to keep the formal tone, but I'm going over the word limit so I'm hoping contractions will save me. Thanks in advance!
  18. Hey guys, this is my first time using IB Survival and I found out that it is really beneficial for the IB student. My Physics EE revolves around the effect wheels have on the recoil momentum of a potato cannon. RQ: To what extent does the rolling friction of wheels affect the recoil momentum of a potato cannon after launch? I just want your opinion on my research question and my topic, and if you believe it can be improved please let me know. As for the experiment itself, I am planning on building a potato cannon (with and without wheels) and comparing these three things after the launch of the potato: the location of the cannon, the speed of the potato, and the distance the potato traveled. Please let me know if there is a problem with my approach and how it can be improved, it would mean the world to me. Thank you

  20. Hi, everyone. I have some struggles with my ESS IA. I decided to look at the water quality of the lake. I got physicochemical measurements such as DO, Suspended substances, PH, BOD-5, ammonia, and nitrite. My context is to see how this water quality may affect the lake ecosystem. What do you think are the most important indicators? What formulas or evaluations can I use?
  21. hey, so I recently started brainstorming on what I can do for my chemistry IA. I am doing HL chemistry and I am going into the final year of IB. I have somewhat of a basis on what I want to do. I want to do titration, having the acid be hydrochloric acid and using various basic solutions. For the basic solutions, I want to create solutions from some antacids and compare how each antacid works by seeing how much of each is needed for the pH of the acid to reach and maintain a neutral pH. I'm not sure if this is going to work because this idea is still in the works. Any ideas or tips on how I can improve??
  22. So I decided that for my extended essay, I was gonna culture bacteria (e.coli) and check the effect of the pH and the correlation between the pH level and the growth of the bacteria. However, instead of using the quadrant method to spread the bacteria over the plate I just made a continuous pattern as seen in the pic. Can somebody help me count the colonies to check how the pH affected the growth? Thanks, plenty.
  23. Hello, I am finding it difficult to decide which science subjects to choose and would appreciate some help and guidance. First of all, I am not entirely sure what I want to study in the future (perhaps economics, although the sciences really interest me too). That being said, I am sure about studying in the US. I have done a summer course in IB biology (also math which I am fairly well at), also had a brief look at the content that appears in IB physics. I have no prior background in chemistry however. These are my subjects in general: Economics HL English HL Science HL Math SL Ab initio SL Science SL I want to pick 2 science subjects, one at HL respectively SL. 1. How is physics HL? Is it the ‘broadest’ science in terms of future studies? Does it differ largely from SL - is SL in that case quite a bit easier? Easiest / hardest topic? 2. How is chemistry SL? I am not to keen on HL, and have heard that SL is easy. Easiest / hardest topic? How do you study for it? Is it quite mathematical? 3. Lastly, is biology HL much more difficult compared to SL? Is bio SL pretty much the same level as chem SL? In case I take bio and physics - is that a weird combination, from universities perspective? Since the subjects don’t overlap that much at all..btw, which subjects do overlap the most and would this ease study? Here are the combinations I am considering: Physics HL + Biology SL or vice versa Biology HL + Chemistry SL Thanks in advance! Also, please do share any additional insight/your experience with the subjects besides from my questions.
  24. In 10th grade we need to pick our IB courses, and I really want to take ESS. Unfortunately, my school doesn't offer it. Are there any plans to add ESS to the Pamoja site?
  25. I have a chem blog called Chem Is Try. It's both on the ChemNet of the RSC and Blogger (well, I should have put it on WordPress.) The blogger address is aquilinachemistry.blogspot.com. (Feel free to visit it if you like!) The first blog post about the chemistry set was actually recommended by the RSC (I think via ChemNet newsletter last year). The question is...I have not written one entry in the last 4 months. For each of the entry, I would like to think topics that are really compelling, interesting, and informative to write. The brainstorm part takes quite a long time. I have been busy with other chemistry/design/interdisciplinary activities and my academics in the 4 months and haven't written one new post. Now I have 6 entries and some followers on ChemNet. So what to do with my blog? I would like to work more on it after my SATs and maybe promote it to a wider audience. Now I just left the blog on the two websites without promoting them...
