  1. Hi, I am struggling with a written assignment in Language A: Literature and I have faced a significant issue, while the deadline is approaching. Is it allowed to compare a translation of a poem (to a language that it is taught in) with its original version? Is it allowed to prepare written assignment just on one poem and its translation? I have chosen the following topic: "About different ways of presenting the major character in „Carcass”. A comparative analysis of the original poem by Baudelaire with its translation." I am comparing the translation of a French poem with the original work and the purpose of this comparison is to evidence that the translator lost - to certain extent - the sense of the original text. Is it a properly chosen topic for a written assignment in Language A: Literature? Can a written assignment be a comparison of a translation with an original piece of literature? Can one poem by the subject of analysis? I would very much appreciate anyone help me to answer this question!! Joanna
  2. Hi! I have been searching many hours to come up with a chemistry topic for my extended essay but I find it extremly hard to find a topic and a research question. Now I am starting to run out of time as I ideally should have decided my topic by tomorrow. I was wondering if any of you have any recommendations on were to find inspiration or ideas for sutiable investigations (I am doing an experimental based essay). If anyone who has written their extended essay in chemistry could tell me how they came up with their topic and the thought process behind it, it would be extremly helpfull!!
  3. Hi everyone! Ok so, my original Extended Essay research question was "How are the common themes of betrayal and love portrayed differently in the Shakespearean comedy “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” when compared to the tragedy “King Lear.” However, my adviser said that it was too narrow for an EE and I should compare two different playwrights instead. I'm not really interested in going outside of Shakespeare, so I have decided to completely change my topic. I'm still sticking to English Literature, but I think I'm leaning towards novels instead. This is where I need help. I really want to do something with "A Thousand Splendid Suns" since it's a beautiful book, relates to me personally, and I haven't seen it used in any Extended Essays so far. Besides that, I don't really know which direction I should go in. A little guidance or some suggestions would be helpful and much appreciated. Also, if my original topic could be somehow be salvaged, I'd be incredibly grateful for that. Thank you so much! Update: I did some research and I'm considering maybe comparing "A Thousand Splendid Suns" with "The Bastard of Istanbul." Lemme know what you think! Thanks!
  4. NEED HELP ASAP! I am having some difficulty with formulating a question for my IA topic, which is harmonic frequencies. My dependent variable is the frequency. My independent variable are the different harmonics I am playing on the frets of a guitar. How do I come up with a question for that?
  5. Hey everyone, I've noticed that there is a lack of Theater Arts students on this website and I struggle to find help and advice for my Theater class. Today I decided to put that behind me considering I have been through a lot during my theater journey and decided it would be easier for me to just create a forum for the new Theater Arts students from 2016 onward. This forum will be a discussion point for everything Theater based from the Nov 2016 session and for the years to come (unless they change the syllabus again). Please feel free to ask me any questions that might concern you about the Theater Arts course as I am graduating this November so I've gone through the ups and the downs of being a Theater student.
  6. Hi everyone, I am in my first year of IB and my class is getting started on our EE's earlier to save time in the future. Our teacher wants us to choose our topic and formulate our research question as soon as possible but I am confused on what question, let alone the topic I want to research in. With topics in mind, our teacher suggested that we choose based on something we are passionate or interested in, but I don't really find myself passionate towards any of the IB classes I am taking. I am really interested in psychology but haven't taken the class, and I understand that it is not recommended to choose a topic in which you haven't taken the class. Given how long time has passed and the fact I have not yet found a topic, I feel doubtful whether or not I should continue this route. Is there any wisdom/advice on how to approach this? Thank you so much!

  8. Hi everyone, My class is beginning to write the first section of our history IAs and my teacher said that it will be okay to revise our questions. I have to write this first section in 2 days, but I am having doubts whether or not my research question is appropriate or not. Here is my question: "Was it inevitable for the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings to occur?" I feel like the question is not specific enough and based on my research, there are so many theories that my IA could end up all over the place. I was thinking about changing it but with a topic similar to my original one, like this: "To what extent did the Soviet Union's declaration of war against Japan during World War II affect their surrender in 1945?" Could I still use my first question or should I try to revise it? If so, what are some ideas for topics? Thank you so much!
  9. Want to share the title of your extended essay? Or perhaps need help choosing one? This is the place. Psychology - The Psychology of Road Rage: A discussion of psychological explanations of road rage and policy implications.
  10. Hey! Does someone have any notes on the history books IB called "Authoritarian States" and "Cold War" Thank you
  11. hey guys, is it a good idea for me to do the laplace transform for my Math HL IA? I'll base it on simple harmonic motion of bungee jumping, and I need your feedbacks whether this is a good topic or not. There will be some out of the syllabus stuff, but it involves integration by parts, algebra and some basic stuff. I'm displaying the concept in an amateur way. Thoughts?
  12. Hi everyone, I found an interesting maths IA topic that really interests me but found out that someone is using the same topic for her extended essay. So can I use the same topic for my IA? Thank You!!
  13. Hello all, I am still stuck at choosing my topic for my Extended Essay for English. I have chosen a book called 'Purple Hibiscus'. If anyone has any idea about what topic I can talk about and the things that I can explore more about it, please help me. Thank you so much
  14. Hi guys! I'm trying to write my EE in history and my research question is due next week. I know I want to write my EE about the Italian Mafia, but I don't know how to word a research question. A research question I was thinking about was: "How did the Italian Mafia influence West Virginia Primary in May 1960, effectively winning JFK the Democratic Primary?" I'm not sure if it's good enough though. How can I improve this RQ? Thanks!
  15. Hey guys! I'm in Business sl and I am doubting a little about what my RQ should be. I want to do my IA about motivation, possibly centered on my mother's business (it's a pretty big school chain, and currently in UK and Spain.) and the motivation of their teachers. I am not sure about how to center it. My main ideas: How could Company X improve the motivation of their teachers in its spanish schools? Should Company X implement Y theory (Pink's, Maslow's...) to improve teacher motivation in Spain? I'm stuck!!! Please help
  16. I'm in physics HL and I have to do my IA soon. I found this interesting equipment in my laboratory that launches metal balls with a set speed or launch angle. I wanted to do something with this equipment and came up with the topic of comparing "launch angle vs horizontal range." I'm worried if this is too easy for a physics HL student. My teacher said it's better to stick with an easy topic and do the writeup extremely thorough. If this is too easy, I'm also considering to compare "launch height vs horizontal range." Could you please recommend which would be a better topic, and if both are too easy, could you please give me some inspiration for other experiments that could be done with this equipment? Thanks.
  17. Hello everyone, Now I am one of those students that sucks at science and chose chemistry just because I thought it would be the one I'm least likely to fail in. But now that the internal assessment has come up I really don't know what to do. I understand how Google works, so the issue isn't googling and researching on the internet. However, I was wondering if anyone knew a topic that would be easy to understand and research? I also feel like I should add that I am not looking for a unique and interesting experiment which will get me a good grade. I just need to understand what I'm doing and pass.
  18. Hello, so I'm kind of new to this and will be starting IB next year (this use to be my sister's account who has already graduated). Before the term ended, my school gave the 10th grade a little orientation regarding the DP for next year. They gave us our subject selection sheet and currently, I'm beating myself over which one I should take. I'm not really a scientific person nor am I interested in learning about the Earth (as bad as that sounds). So the best advice that I could receive is which subject is the most easiest for me to pass and who knows, which one of them might interest me later on. Bio SL or ESS SL?
  19. Hello: The deadline for submitting the first draft of the Biology IA is approaching but I'm still not sure if my topic is viable. The topic I chose was: "The effects of drinks in the blood's pH" ( it's a rough translation from spanish). It's going to be an experiment where I take various samples of blood, add acidic drinks like coffee, soda and alcohol and alcaline drinks like fruit juice, and measure the change they make to the pH of the blood, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea. Please help and thank you
  20. Hello everyone, I'm currently working on my math IA but I havent decided on which topic I want to do. However, I want to do my math IA on integration or differentiation. If you know any topic that is suitable for HL, please comment. Your response will be appreciated!
  21. PLEASE HELP. For my Mathematics HL IA I was planning on calculating the Earth's perimeter, radius and then calculate the Earth's curvature using no technology. To calculate the perimeter I need to measure the shadow length of an object in two different locations at the same time. In or Der to not deal with having to do measurements on a second location, I decided to pick the date as 21 of December and the location somewhere on the tropic of Capricorn so I know that the shadow length is zero and I only have to take into account the shadow length of my stick. (I live in the North hemisphere) By using the function arctangent I would find the angle between the two locations and I would only need the distance between them. This is where my problem is. In the past, people traveled to measure the distance between the two places. They found results like 6.6 camel days (It took a camel 6.6 days to travel the distance) and made rough estimates. Then I thought maybe I could do the same thing but using how many hours it takes to travel with a plane. But I had initially planned to calculate the distance using spherical geometry, but in order to do that I think I need coordinates (which would mean I have to use navigation). Then I could find out the radius and then prove how curvature is calculated using calculus and calculate the curvature of the Earth and then compare it to the actual results to see how far maths can take me. Do you think this would be a good topic for IA and is the level of math going to be enough? And also what method should I use to calculate the distance between the two locations?
  22. I had two ideas in mind for my Math HL IA 1) I was thinking about doing it on non Euclidian geometry. I couldn't find a specific topic but I was thinking about proving that the Earth is round using spherical geometry but I am not exactly sure how to do it. 2) I was thinking about the Mandelbrot set. Maybe showing how it was bound by 2, but that would be repeating something that has already been discovered and proved many times before. If you have any suggestions on how I might find a specific topic it would really be helpful.
  23. Okay so I have to turn in a group 4 research question by Friday this week and my group members haven't been helping me at all. Right now we have an idea going with how sustainable biodegradable, paper and plastic materials are compared to each other. Basically just testing how long it takes each one to decompose and see which one goes faster. But that's not a 5x5 design and we only have 2 months so we can't really use that. Please help me out. I cannot carry this project on my own and I'm swamped with other things I have to do. So please drop some research questions. We have a really broad topic of community, so anything that can help improve the community or that can be tested within a typical community. That's what I'm working with, please drop any ideas.
  24. So this is my first time to do this, like conducting my own research and I am still not sure of this critical thinking side of the IB program because previously I did the IGCSE which based more on like writing and following instruction. Right now my first drafts are almost due and I desperately need an IA topic. If this helps, I am interested in taking veterinary science in University so! PLEASE HELP! Any help is really helpful right now!!
  25. So I have this idea for my chemistry IA that I'm not sure of. I want to compare and contrast the effect of the different ratio between baking soda and acid vs. the amount of baking powder on the height the cake after baking. Baking powder is a mixture of baking soda and another acid that reacts when mixed with wet ingredient; it is used to make a cake "fluffy." I want to see if baking soda + acid will have the same effect as baking powder and how different amount of it will affect how much the cake rises. Possible variables: Independent- the ratio between baking soda and an acid + amount of baking powder (the total mass of baking powder and acid will be constant, and the mass of baking powder will change) Dependent- The height of the cake after baking Control: size of the mold, the amount of ingredients for the cake (flour, water, oil, etc.), baking temperature & time, amount of batter before baking, type of acid, type of baking powder, type of baking soda. The problem with this idea is that there are too many variables that can influence the result of the experiment. For example, how it is mixed, placement in the oven, spread of the batter etc. Will this be a good topic to do? Is there any way for me to control these variables? Or change some aspect of it to make it more controllable?
