  1. So I am entering my second year as a DP student which is both exciting and unnerving due to the shear amount of work there is to do. That being said my math teacher over the summer wanted us to finalize our math IA topics. I have narrowed it down to two potential topics which are the geometry of ice hockey or how does listening to music affect ones ability to solve math equations. Thanks so much, Maddy
  2. Hi, My fieldwork report (IA) is due to be finished till the end of summer tbh my class has done a fieldwork investigation already in an urban park area in a bigger city, but the whole data collection was messed up and now i'm thinking about doing a research on my own :( I live in Hungary and the only place where they grow rice is around the little town where i happen to live...they have bio rice, wild rice and all kinds of stuff, anyways It sort of a HUGE deal, the paddy fields take up an area of 1000 ha land, they water it from a special canal and supposedly it satisfies 30% of the European wild rice market demands... I've been thinking about doing an IA related to this, but i'm not sure which topic would be optimal for this and what things could i really measure... Maybe it could be about something related to soil degradation or impact on the local environment in general, and the question could be like "How has agricultural activity at Location Y affected X?", but i can't really examine the impact over time...so I don't know :/ Any idea/suggestion/tip is deeply appreciated and desperately needed :3
  3. Want to share the title of your extended essay? Or perhaps need help choosing one? This is the place. Psychology - The Psychology of Road Rage: A discussion of psychological explanations of road rage and policy implications.
  4. I wanted to ask whether this topic would be suitable for an extended essay in chemistry. It involves comparing the effectiveness of different (or components in them) of physical and chemical sunscreens. In order to do so, I can either find out the effect they have on the voltage output of a DSSC, or I was thinking of using spectrophotometry. So is this idea okay? The topic is finalized, but just finding the exact research question/aim was difficult. Any help is appreciated as my supervisor doesn't reply to emails and we currently have holidays for a few weeks.
  5. Hi, I'll have to decide on our ia topics by tomorrow! I came up with 2 potential ia topics but can't decide which one to do: Does my city fit the multi-nuclei model? What factors affect the sphere of influence of the local supermarket/store? With the 1st one I'll need to find certain features in the, say 5-6, potential commercial centers in my city, and use the definitions to prove that they are indeed CBDs, and then piece them together. There're a few classmates with similar topics and we're supposed to go in groups, but still it might be pretty tough fieldwork? With the latter I'll first measure the sphere of influence, and then come up with affecting factors, like the types of goods they sell. Problem is, the effect of sth on sth is usually pretty relative, means there has to be a range of variables? Like I need to go from the grocery to the supermarket and to a department store? That would be too much for 2500 words. Has anyone done similar topics before? Any tips on that? Which one should I do??? Thanks a lot.
  6. Hi guys! I’m choosing the topic of my English B EE topic. Most of the topics I’ve seen in the internet are related to the books but I was wondering if I could do it on more “social” topic like for example how does the development of the internet affects sth?
  7. Hi. I've decided to do my EE in English, focusing on Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. I'm not getting any good advice from my supervisor, and the internet isn't really helping me. I've gone through a lot of book changes prior to this, more specifically dystopian and feminist books. However, I've read that these are really overused topics, so I wanted to try to think out of the box. I decided to choose Percy Jackson because I think that there is a lot of content I can analyze for my 4,000 words. It's okay to choose a relatively 'easy' book for EE, right? Right now, I need help on choosing a topic and formulating a good research question. Honestly, I'm stuck at choosing which topic I should focus on. I'm scared if the topics I have in mind will be good enough for an EE. I would really appreciate feedback on the topics, and the research questions that come along with them. Here's what I have so far. 1. The Portrayal of Greek Mythology in Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief How does Riordan portray classic characters from ancient Greek mythology in Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief? : Classic vs revised character traits of the Greek gods How does Riordan associate ancient Greek mythology with modern literature in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief?: Plots of the original Greek myths affected by modern technology, environment, characteristics of the Greek gods, etc. 2. Family Roles in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief How does Riordan portray family roles in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief?: Nature of family, duties and responsibilities of a parent and a child; how gods neglect their roles as parents, and how their demigod children are expected to do more 3. Coming of Age in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief How does Riordan portray the coming of age in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief?: How internal conflicts faced by the character is portrayed in the form of monsters and evil villains 4. The Hero Concept in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief How does Riordan define the meaning of a hero in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief?: Characteristics of a hero; analysing different characters and how they are considered heroes
  8. Hi, I am in dire need of help with selecting my math ee topic. I currently have in mind brachistochrone curves, but I can't think of a suitable RQ.
  9. Hello guys, I need an interesting bio hl topic for my IA. I was thinking about something connected with allelopathy, for example, planting mint and cucumber near each other and measuring how the cucumber is affected, maybe adding different temperatures so it wouldn't seem so easy? or something with essential oils and how they affect the growth of different plants but I don't really know which I could choose. What do you guys think?
  10. Hey! Does someone have any notes on the history books IB called "Authoritarian States" and "Cold War" Thank you
  11. Hey, everyone, I'm a bit new to the forum so sorry if the post might be a bit complicated/unclear. I have a question supposed to get simple and nice/easy however it gets complicated sadly, about my IB choices... So first of all, I think I'm a really good student this year (I like to think), so my grades are decent (mostly As). The thing is, I'm really not sure of what I would like to do in the future, and this is causing problems in terms of choices for my IB subjects. The topics in which I am the most interested in general (after high school, as a potential degree or something) would be the following: Psychology, Business Management, Biology, Economics, Engineering. For the moment, in terms of my choices for the IB, I still have 9 subject choices open and need to cut down the options to 6!! Here are my options still left/which I think I'll take: French A Lang. & Lit SL English A Lit. SL Physics/Chemistry/Biology HL Economics/Psych/Business HL Mathematics HL Taking an extra subject (probs HL), no arts, so it would be an extra from the choices above. My school told me they would authorize me to take 4 HLs if needed at the beginning of the school year and then drop one if I want to, or not, depending on how I would feel about it. Sorry for the post being so long, but thanks for the help!! thanks for answering!! and thanks for reading!!
  12. Hello guys, I have taken Extended Essay in Physics which is my HL subject, I was thinking of doing it on the Projectile motion in soccer. Is it a good topic? What experiment can I do in it?
  13. Hi, I am struggling with a written assignment in Language A: Literature and I have faced a significant issue, while the deadline is approaching. Is it allowed to compare a translation of a poem (to a language that it is taught in) with its original version? Is it allowed to prepare written assignment just on one poem and its translation? I have chosen the following topic: "About different ways of presenting the major character in „Carcass”. A comparative analysis of the original poem by Baudelaire with its translation." I am comparing the translation of a French poem with the original work and the purpose of this comparison is to evidence that the translator lost - to certain extent - the sense of the original text. Is it a properly chosen topic for a written assignment in Language A: Literature? Can a written assignment be a comparison of a translation with an original piece of literature? Can one poem by the subject of analysis? I would very much appreciate anyone help me to answer this question!! Joanna
  14. Hi! I have been searching many hours to come up with a chemistry topic for my extended essay but I find it extremly hard to find a topic and a research question. Now I am starting to run out of time as I ideally should have decided my topic by tomorrow. I was wondering if any of you have any recommendations on were to find inspiration or ideas for sutiable investigations (I am doing an experimental based essay). If anyone who has written their extended essay in chemistry could tell me how they came up with their topic and the thought process behind it, it would be extremly helpfull!!
  15. Hi everyone! Ok so, my original Extended Essay research question was "How are the common themes of betrayal and love portrayed differently in the Shakespearean comedy “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” when compared to the tragedy “King Lear.” However, my adviser said that it was too narrow for an EE and I should compare two different playwrights instead. I'm not really interested in going outside of Shakespeare, so I have decided to completely change my topic. I'm still sticking to English Literature, but I think I'm leaning towards novels instead. This is where I need help. I really want to do something with "A Thousand Splendid Suns" since it's a beautiful book, relates to me personally, and I haven't seen it used in any Extended Essays so far. Besides that, I don't really know which direction I should go in. A little guidance or some suggestions would be helpful and much appreciated. Also, if my original topic could be somehow be salvaged, I'd be incredibly grateful for that. Thank you so much! Update: I did some research and I'm considering maybe comparing "A Thousand Splendid Suns" with "The Bastard of Istanbul." Lemme know what you think! Thanks!
  16. NEED HELP ASAP! I am having some difficulty with formulating a question for my IA topic, which is harmonic frequencies. My dependent variable is the frequency. My independent variable are the different harmonics I am playing on the frets of a guitar. How do I come up with a question for that?
  17. Hey everyone, I've noticed that there is a lack of Theater Arts students on this website and I struggle to find help and advice for my Theater class. Today I decided to put that behind me considering I have been through a lot during my theater journey and decided it would be easier for me to just create a forum for the new Theater Arts students from 2016 onward. This forum will be a discussion point for everything Theater based from the Nov 2016 session and for the years to come (unless they change the syllabus again). Please feel free to ask me any questions that might concern you about the Theater Arts course as I am graduating this November so I've gone through the ups and the downs of being a Theater student.
  18. Hi everyone, I am in my first year of IB and my class is getting started on our EE's earlier to save time in the future. Our teacher wants us to choose our topic and formulate our research question as soon as possible but I am confused on what question, let alone the topic I want to research in. With topics in mind, our teacher suggested that we choose based on something we are passionate or interested in, but I don't really find myself passionate towards any of the IB classes I am taking. I am really interested in psychology but haven't taken the class, and I understand that it is not recommended to choose a topic in which you haven't taken the class. Given how long time has passed and the fact I have not yet found a topic, I feel doubtful whether or not I should continue this route. Is there any wisdom/advice on how to approach this? Thank you so much!

  20. Hi everyone, My class is beginning to write the first section of our history IAs and my teacher said that it will be okay to revise our questions. I have to write this first section in 2 days, but I am having doubts whether or not my research question is appropriate or not. Here is my question: "Was it inevitable for the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings to occur?" I feel like the question is not specific enough and based on my research, there are so many theories that my IA could end up all over the place. I was thinking about changing it but with a topic similar to my original one, like this: "To what extent did the Soviet Union's declaration of war against Japan during World War II affect their surrender in 1945?" Could I still use my first question or should I try to revise it? If so, what are some ideas for topics? Thank you so much!
  21. hey guys, is it a good idea for me to do the laplace transform for my Math HL IA? I'll base it on simple harmonic motion of bungee jumping, and I need your feedbacks whether this is a good topic or not. There will be some out of the syllabus stuff, but it involves integration by parts, algebra and some basic stuff. I'm displaying the concept in an amateur way. Thoughts?
  22. Hi everyone, I found an interesting maths IA topic that really interests me but found out that someone is using the same topic for her extended essay. So can I use the same topic for my IA? Thank You!!
  23. Hello all, I am still stuck at choosing my topic for my Extended Essay for English. I have chosen a book called 'Purple Hibiscus'. If anyone has any idea about what topic I can talk about and the things that I can explore more about it, please help me. Thank you so much
  24. Hi guys! I'm trying to write my EE in history and my research question is due next week. I know I want to write my EE about the Italian Mafia, but I don't know how to word a research question. A research question I was thinking about was: "How did the Italian Mafia influence West Virginia Primary in May 1960, effectively winning JFK the Democratic Primary?" I'm not sure if it's good enough though. How can I improve this RQ? Thanks!
  25. Hey guys! I'm in Business sl and I am doubting a little about what my RQ should be. I want to do my IA about motivation, possibly centered on my mother's business (it's a pretty big school chain, and currently in UK and Spain.) and the motivation of their teachers. I am not sure about how to center it. My main ideas: How could Company X improve the motivation of their teachers in its spanish schools? Should Company X implement Y theory (Pink's, Maslow's...) to improve teacher motivation in Spain? I'm stuck!!! Please help
