  1. Hello all, I am still stuck at choosing my topic for my Extended Essay for English. I have chosen a book called 'Purple Hibiscus'. If anyone has any idea about what topic I can talk about and the things that I can explore more about it, please help me. Thank you so much
  2. Hi guys! I'm trying to write my EE in history and my research question is due next week. I know I want to write my EE about the Italian Mafia, but I don't know how to word a research question. A research question I was thinking about was: "How did the Italian Mafia influence West Virginia Primary in May 1960, effectively winning JFK the Democratic Primary?" I'm not sure if it's good enough though. How can I improve this RQ? Thanks!
  3. Want to share the title of your extended essay? Or perhaps need help choosing one? This is the place. Psychology - The Psychology of Road Rage: A discussion of psychological explanations of road rage and policy implications.
  4. Hey guys! I'm in Business sl and I am doubting a little about what my RQ should be. I want to do my IA about motivation, possibly centered on my mother's business (it's a pretty big school chain, and currently in UK and Spain.) and the motivation of their teachers. I am not sure about how to center it. My main ideas: How could Company X improve the motivation of their teachers in its spanish schools? Should Company X implement Y theory (Pink's, Maslow's...) to improve teacher motivation in Spain? I'm stuck!!! Please help
  5. I'm in physics HL and I have to do my IA soon. I found this interesting equipment in my laboratory that launches metal balls with a set speed or launch angle. I wanted to do something with this equipment and came up with the topic of comparing "launch angle vs horizontal range." I'm worried if this is too easy for a physics HL student. My teacher said it's better to stick with an easy topic and do the writeup extremely thorough. If this is too easy, I'm also considering to compare "launch height vs horizontal range." Could you please recommend which would be a better topic, and if both are too easy, could you please give me some inspiration for other experiments that could be done with this equipment? Thanks.
  6. Hello everyone, Now I am one of those students that sucks at science and chose chemistry just because I thought it would be the one I'm least likely to fail in. But now that the internal assessment has come up I really don't know what to do. I understand how Google works, so the issue isn't googling and researching on the internet. However, I was wondering if anyone knew a topic that would be easy to understand and research? I also feel like I should add that I am not looking for a unique and interesting experiment which will get me a good grade. I just need to understand what I'm doing and pass.
  7. Hello, so I'm kind of new to this and will be starting IB next year (this use to be my sister's account who has already graduated). Before the term ended, my school gave the 10th grade a little orientation regarding the DP for next year. They gave us our subject selection sheet and currently, I'm beating myself over which one I should take. I'm not really a scientific person nor am I interested in learning about the Earth (as bad as that sounds). So the best advice that I could receive is which subject is the most easiest for me to pass and who knows, which one of them might interest me later on. Bio SL or ESS SL?
  8. Hello: The deadline for submitting the first draft of the Biology IA is approaching but I'm still not sure if my topic is viable. The topic I chose was: "The effects of drinks in the blood's pH" ( it's a rough translation from spanish). It's going to be an experiment where I take various samples of blood, add acidic drinks like coffee, soda and alcohol and alcaline drinks like fruit juice, and measure the change they make to the pH of the blood, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea. Please help and thank you
  9. Hello everyone, I'm currently working on my math IA but I havent decided on which topic I want to do. However, I want to do my math IA on integration or differentiation. If you know any topic that is suitable for HL, please comment. Your response will be appreciated!
  10. PLEASE HELP. For my Mathematics HL IA I was planning on calculating the Earth's perimeter, radius and then calculate the Earth's curvature using no technology. To calculate the perimeter I need to measure the shadow length of an object in two different locations at the same time. In or Der to not deal with having to do measurements on a second location, I decided to pick the date as 21 of December and the location somewhere on the tropic of Capricorn so I know that the shadow length is zero and I only have to take into account the shadow length of my stick. (I live in the North hemisphere) By using the function arctangent I would find the angle between the two locations and I would only need the distance between them. This is where my problem is. In the past, people traveled to measure the distance between the two places. They found results like 6.6 camel days (It took a camel 6.6 days to travel the distance) and made rough estimates. Then I thought maybe I could do the same thing but using how many hours it takes to travel with a plane. But I had initially planned to calculate the distance using spherical geometry, but in order to do that I think I need coordinates (which would mean I have to use navigation). Then I could find out the radius and then prove how curvature is calculated using calculus and calculate the curvature of the Earth and then compare it to the actual results to see how far maths can take me. Do you think this would be a good topic for IA and is the level of math going to be enough? And also what method should I use to calculate the distance between the two locations?
  11. I had two ideas in mind for my Math HL IA 1) I was thinking about doing it on non Euclidian geometry. I couldn't find a specific topic but I was thinking about proving that the Earth is round using spherical geometry but I am not exactly sure how to do it. 2) I was thinking about the Mandelbrot set. Maybe showing how it was bound by 2, but that would be repeating something that has already been discovered and proved many times before. If you have any suggestions on how I might find a specific topic it would really be helpful.
  12. Okay so I have to turn in a group 4 research question by Friday this week and my group members haven't been helping me at all. Right now we have an idea going with how sustainable biodegradable, paper and plastic materials are compared to each other. Basically just testing how long it takes each one to decompose and see which one goes faster. But that's not a 5x5 design and we only have 2 months so we can't really use that. Please help me out. I cannot carry this project on my own and I'm swamped with other things I have to do. So please drop some research questions. We have a really broad topic of community, so anything that can help improve the community or that can be tested within a typical community. That's what I'm working with, please drop any ideas.
  13. So this is my first time to do this, like conducting my own research and I am still not sure of this critical thinking side of the IB program because previously I did the IGCSE which based more on like writing and following instruction. Right now my first drafts are almost due and I desperately need an IA topic. If this helps, I am interested in taking veterinary science in University so! PLEASE HELP! Any help is really helpful right now!!
  14. So I have this idea for my chemistry IA that I'm not sure of. I want to compare and contrast the effect of the different ratio between baking soda and acid vs. the amount of baking powder on the height the cake after baking. Baking powder is a mixture of baking soda and another acid that reacts when mixed with wet ingredient; it is used to make a cake "fluffy." I want to see if baking soda + acid will have the same effect as baking powder and how different amount of it will affect how much the cake rises. Possible variables: Independent- the ratio between baking soda and an acid + amount of baking powder (the total mass of baking powder and acid will be constant, and the mass of baking powder will change) Dependent- The height of the cake after baking Control: size of the mold, the amount of ingredients for the cake (flour, water, oil, etc.), baking temperature & time, amount of batter before baking, type of acid, type of baking powder, type of baking soda. The problem with this idea is that there are too many variables that can influence the result of the experiment. For example, how it is mixed, placement in the oven, spread of the batter etc. Will this be a good topic to do? Is there any way for me to control these variables? Or change some aspect of it to make it more controllable?
  15. Hey! I need to get a research question and I am interested to become a Veterinarian and I want to do an IA connected to it, however, I am confused on the topic I can do for my biology IA.
  16. Hi, I am trying to come up with an EE topic (I am already pretty late on this whole EE thing) and the only subject left for me to do it in is economics I came up with the idea of producing my EE around the topic of books and ebooks, mostly because an uncle of mine actually runs a book distribution company and can help me a lot in finding info. My research question right now is: "To what extent did the introduction of e-books in affect the demand and sales for paperback books in the São Paulo region of Brazil?". I live in São Paulo, Brazil, by the way... While I think this might be pretty viable, it has a few problems as the demand and sales for books and e-books is constantly changing everywhere, for many reasons, especially now in the economic mess Brazil is. Because of this, I think it would be very hard to form a cause-and-effect relationship between the books and e-books. Also, according to this uncle of mine, who knows quite a bit about the topic, it would be hard to find information regarding specific sales and the effects of e-books in any one city or region of Brazil, but finding info for the whole country might be possible. As I mentioned, this topic seemed good at first but now presents many practical problems. It would be nice to be able to stick to the whole books theme, but if it's not possible, I will switch to another topic. Anyhow, does anyone have any suggestions, ideas or anything to say on the topic? Anything would be useful really, so if you can think of something please send it my way! Thank you in advance! PS - I've also heard that it might be a good idea to keep my EE focused on microeconomics. Is that true? Thanks again
  17. I'm thinking of doing my ESS Internal Assessment on the Lotka-Volterra Model. It is a set of differential equations which help calculate some variables in prey predator relationships. But I'M not quite what I could do since only explaining the equations and the model using graphs and stuff would probably not be enough for a high score. What else can I do about this topic?
  18. So, I have recently started looking into extended essay topics and I'm not really sure what to do. I'm focusing on history and so far I've come up with the idea to focus the essay on how the rise in political power of the Roman Catholic Church in medieval England affected the lives of the people. But, I'm kinda hesitant on this topic as I'm not sure if this topic would be good to write 4000 words on. Any suggestions on how I could expand upon this idea???
  19. Hey i need a chem ia topic suggestion or sample which will help me in deciding a topic... thank you in advance
  20. So I'm doing my EE in Biology and my research question is "To what extent does constant cold acclimation at the temperatures 18˚, 5˚, and 0˚ degrees centigrade affect the seed germination rate and subsequent total biomass yield produced in Phleum pratense L. (Timothy grass)?". The experiment was supposed to investigate the effects of seeds germinated under cold temperatures and the effect on the biomass produced in seeds after germination among different temperatures. I even had some data with around an 80% germination rate for the seeds at 10˚C. But 10 days in, and 100% of the seeds at 18˚ (my control group!) germinated and 0% of the seeds germinated in both the 5˚ & 0˚ groups. I have no ideas for any other topics in Biology. What do I do? Continue writing the EE with my failed experiment and try to come up with reasons why it failed, and even attempt to state that this could be beneficial to the scientific community? Try to switch research questions within Biology? Or do I all out switch subjects to English and just "type away"? I need answers quick, because I have 9 weeks left until I have to present an EE without a conclusion. Future message to those who reply: Thank you for taking your time to read and answer!
  21. Hey Guys, So i wanted to write my EE on the effects of segregation in schools in the 1960's do you know any good sources I could use?
  22. Trying to choose a good IA Question for IB History SL. My IA is about the Vietnam war...Potential Questions I came up with are: MLK and how he impacted the Vietnam War: The consequence of/Impact of: Entering Vietnam war MLK’s speech College demonstrations: On many college campuses these demonstrations took the form of student strikes, teach-in sessions, and peace rallies. Vietnam war economically on African Americans/White Americans. Opposition to the war from Citizens on the role the US in the Vietnam war Multiple Perspectives: MLK, College Demonstrations, and Gov’t How did the anti-war protest affect foreign policy during the Vietnam war? How did the black anti-war protest affect race relations inside the military? What role did MLK have decreasing discrimination inside the military? What was the consequence of racial discrimination on black veterans? How did hate groups affect the success of anti-war movements? ______________________ Tips, suggestions. Any question that looks good from above???
  23. Ok, I'm trying out a few different topics but i need to know if I could get a good paper out of discussing/investigating the origin of Hitler's hate for the Jews. I know there are many different takes on this but do any of you think it'd be okay? If not, any suggestions? I'm trying to go more on the path of the Holocaust.
  24. I would like to ask you guys about my extended essay topic, and honestly, tell me if it's fine. Can we successfully genetically engineer E.coli bacteria to fix nitrogen?. As the title suggests, I would chemically engineer e.coli bacteria to go through the process of natural nitrogen fixation. Concerning tools, I got in contact with a university nearby and they agreed to help. Am sorry if this sounds like it was written in a hurry because... well.. it was.
  25. Hi, My teacher has accepted a EE topic but I think that it is ethically okay while she is quite unsure we both are trying to get other opinions... so the topic is: Computer gaming/reading on visual acuity now this would have an affect of photoreceptors. My scientific explanation is it develops Myopia due to constant use of computers In her opinion its ethically wrong cuz we might are affecting someones vision, while mostly all schools use technology especially computers all day. Therefore, If someone who's kinda an expert in these things or have an opinion in this please advise, as this is a really interesting topic with very good personal engagement and I think I'll do a great job in it... Thank you Hope to hear from someone soon
