  1. Hi guys, I attend a school in Germany that both offers the Abitur system and the IBDP. After the first semester of Abitur, I realized that IB would be better for me so I discussed a switch with my IB coordinator. He said I could either join the IB next semester (2nd semester) after the christmas break or join the IB from scratch next year. NowI want to join as soon as possible and rather not retake the year but in IB, but my coordinator said that without a report for my first semester, I wouldn't be able to study in Germany. To what extent is this true and does this apply to ALL Universities in Germany?? Like can I still use my IB final grade to join certain private or international schools in Germany? And is there absolutely no way I can study in German without my first semester report?? I also read about a "studienkolleg" which IB students need to take to join a school that doesn't accept IB in Germany? Can I do that after IB? Or is there anyway to somehow get my first semester report without repeating the start of the year? Please help I don't know what to do For reference: - I would soon get a report for my first semester in ABITUR - my subjects would be HL: English, German, Bio SL: Chem, History, Maths - I would like to study biology in the future

  3. Hey guys I have already finished my grade 11 and till now I have no idea about what I want to do in my future or about my career choices. I really want to get into a university in either new Zealand or Australia. I'm really interested in music and literature but i'm thinking i might not make a career out of these cause i'm just and average singer and i don't think i will make it. Also i'm not extremely good in writing so that brings it down to 0. Now I'm extremely worried and don't know what I should do. My subjects are: Eng HL - 5 Psych HL - 6 B&M HL - 5 Math studies SL - 5 ESS SL - 6 Spanish ab initio - 4
  4. Long story short, I did a bio extended essay, messed up the experiment, instead of isolated colonies I got a single weird blob. No data collected. Failed the experiment. Am I allowed to use external data to support my arguments?

  7. Hey! I'm thinking about my subject choices and I'm intrigued by theatre and visual arts. However, I'm scared they'll be seen as "soft subjects" in uni. Is this true? I'm thinking about either taking one of the art subjects or then global politics. Also, how would you describe the differences between visual arts and theatre? Is one harder or more time consuming than the other? Any and all experiences and tips are welcome!
  8. Hi guys, As I want to study economics at a selective university (in U.S) in the future, and I cannot stand taking Math HL at the moment, would it be sufficient to take Math SL combined with AP BC calc? I find Math SL very easy and score 6's/7's frequently (this is since I am repeating one year of the IB), so how hard would it be to shift focus during IB (repeated) year 1 and really study BC calc for almost a semester to take BC exams in spring? In this way I can compete with stronger applicants without having to struggle through the other than calc material in HL Math? Thnx
  9. What subject's are you guys doing and what are you planning to study at university?? personally, I'm doing HL: - Biology - Chemistry - Geography SL - Maths - English Arabic I'm planning to go into dentistry (starting IB in September, i might swap geo with english)
  10. Hey, so I didnt manage to get my diploma and therefore plan on doing retakes. I might not be able to make it to apply to November retakes by the deadline, but I was wondering if I do the May retakes, can I use my predicted grades to apply to any University around the world?
  11. Hi, I am a pre-IB student planning to go on to do a philosophy major. I do not know what subjects I am going to take, however, I have got the following outline in mind: English B HL (I think I could have done A2 as a second language, however, it is not offered in my school) Maths HL (Inspired by Bertrand Russell on this one) Turkish A1 HL/Physics HL/Economics HL (I am pretty much in turmoil) Philosophy SL (If I could take it HL, I would, however, it is not offered in my school and IB Online only has philosophy in SL Physics SL Turkish A1 SL (If I take one of last two in HL, I am going to replace the one I took with either chemistry or economics SL) Now, you may be all over the place as I am. That is why I shall be explaining this peculiar choice. In Turkey, no matter what we do, the national curriculum imposes upon us near-HL-level workload on chemistry, biology and physics. If I take any one of these lessons -except physics HL, which I think can be useful for understanding the philosophy of science and the point to which modern physics has come from a philosophical point of view- it is solely to reduce my workload. I do not think I will even so much as glance towards the national curriculum if our normal exams in school are not in that style -probably they are not, though I have to ask that. If our exams are just on what we learn in the IB, then I will probably choose the following courses: Hi, I am a pre-IB student planning to go on to do a philosophy major. I do not know what subjects I am going to take, however, I have got the following outline in mind: English B HL Maths HL Turkish A1 HL/Physics HL/Economics HL (Turmoil continues) Philosophy SL Physics SL/Economics SL Turkish A1 SL/Economics SL Let me add that if I take economics, I will be taking it online just like I did philosophy. Now, here are my main questions, but all advice is welcome: 1. Will physics SL or HL help me to achieve my objective (i.e. understanding how Newton invented the concept of mass and from that the philosophical foundation of Newtonian physics in general)? 2. What can be the contribution of economics to my study of philosophy? The only thing that I can think of is that some great philosophers after the 19th century (Karl Marx comes to one's mind but John Stuart Mill counts as well) were economists, and I believe that only a basic comprehension of economic principles can support my learning in university on these topics. 3. Can Maths HL have any contribution? You know, maths being an important source of knowledge from Plato in the antiquity to Spinoza and Descartes and modern attempts to rederive the whole of maths on the basis of logic are pretty strong reasons for me to take maths HL. Plus, I am very good at maths; the natural curriculum sucks and the only thing we do is to memorise long theorems in advanced Euclidean geometry, but even in that I could prove by myself many of the theorems we studied. 4. Can Turkish A1 HL have a contribution? Well, let me be pretty straight-forward in here: New Criticism and close inspection of the text to derive meaning is horrible, and I am certain I am not going to ever read a novel in that way. However, literary criticism seems to have strong ties with philosophy, especially with Derrida and his deconstructionism, and Lacan and his "philosophical psychoanalysis" and I try to create my own independent way of looking at literary texts, one that I feel is more meaningful. In view of all this and also considering that the skills that are necessary for writing a well-structured, coherent essay are crucial in all fields, doubtlessly so in philosophy -unless you are Nietzsche, but I digress- I think that Turkish A1 HL might be a good choice. Thank you all for your response and for sticking with me until the end of this very long post. Bonus question: Do you know a way in which I can take English A2 as a second language? I passed FCE with distinction, which means that my English proficiency level is C1, and I think I can very well go beyond the curriculum of English B. I spent the last year studying English B from the Cambridge textbook and it was like having a leisure ride- I had zero difficulties.

  14. Hi! I was wondering does anyone have any experience or reviews about Birkbeck university in London? Because I really want to try out the undergraduate course BA honours for Film and Media, full-time, but I'm not sure whether it's really that good... I read many positive reviews about business and english related courses, but nothing about film. So if you know anything let me know!
  15. Hello guys, I was just looking at the course I think I want to do at uni (I know year 2 and only just deciding and cutting it a bit short but anyway) and it says UK education requirements to be accepted and it only mentions A levels and the required grades but then there was an option for non-UK education and there was no mention of any specific course so I was wondering if any of you knew which one IB would come under? Thank you!
  16. Hey, I'm considering studying law in UK and doing specialisation in animal law later on. And here comes the question: does it matter if I go to a uni that offers animal law as a module course? I've read somewhere that it might be helpful or sth, but the thing is there are not that many schools, which offer it (John Moores, Kingston, Northumbria, Aberdeen, East Anglia, Leeds, Essex, Lincoln), and the ones that do are not the top ones, and the number of points they require (ranging from 27 to 34) is also quite low. What do you think? Thanks for help in advance1

  18. Hey guys, I wanted to ask those who are applying to australian unis, do you apply for the sem.1 in february or the sem.2 in july? I've read on UNSW page that IB students who finish in may can apply for sem.2, but does that mean we cannot apply for the one in february? And does it make any difference? If I apply for sem.2 does it mean that I've missed a part of the course, or what? I'm new to it, so sorry if it's a stupid question
  19. I'm writing my EE in biology, but I'm going to apply for law. Should I change my subject to history or sth or is it ok to write it in subject not related to law? Thanks for any advice!
  20. Is it recommended to write my EE in biology if I'll apply for law later? Or should I better switch to history or sth? Do unis look at EE? Or does oxford especially pay attention to it? Thanks for any advice!

  22. Hello there, I had been doing IB but it seems like I'm going to switch schools, more specifically switch to a different country. I did IGCSE (Cambridge Qualification) and I have a GPA of 3.70/4.00. I'd like to know if there are any universities that would accept me for my IGCSE. I am doing SATs, ACTs and APTs at the moment. I want to major in biology in uni. Pls help out. Thank you
  23. Ask us any general questions and we'll try our best to answer them. Like our uni experiences, etc. If you want some that are geared towards certain disciplines or certain countries, you might have to wait a while. p.s. I'm not sure how well this will work out.
  24. Heya! I can't be alone in taking STEP in a couple of weeks, so I was thinking of having a STEP prep thread where we can help each other out!
