  1. Hii! My HL's are Biology, Chem and Business management. MATHEMATICS SL, English sl and Hindi sl. I had physics up till grade 10 (IGCSE A*). Can I major in Computer science with these subjects in the US (colleges like Georgia tech, Purdue, Wisconsin Madison, etc) (or Canada)? I know they review each applicant holistically, but still subject do matter... Also roughly how many points (out of 45) will I require to be competitive for admission in Georgia tech!
  2. Okay, this question is not too related to IB, but I am doing the IB, and I will soon need to decide which of the exams to take. Both SAT and ACT are very similar, but at the same time, they are quite different. I hope some of you guys could help me out. Which one should I take? Here are some facts which will most probably influence the decision. I am not terribly bad at reading, but I do not like it. I am not too good at writing + I do not like it. I am good at math + I like it. (I am also fine with non-calculator questions) I would want to do tests from Physics and Chemistry. (I want to be a chemical engineer, so that's why) I am not too slow, but I would be glad for more time for the exam. Of course, I want to somehow prepare for the exams, but I do not plan deep, hard studying of the topics. If you need more details, feel free to ask me. I will be happy for any answers! Thank you for the help!
  3. Hey! What do the CalTech Admissions people look for in a candidate? How do I maximise my chances of getting in? Any CalTech Alumni here, I would love your advice.
  4. I am on the verge of choosing my subjects: Math HL Economics HL Comp Sc HL/SL Spanish ab initio English LangLit SL For my final subject, which subject should I choose to get into the finance field because seemingly Business Management is considered a soft subject by Ivy League and top UK Universities?
  5. Hello all, Long story short I dropped the full IB diploma a few days ago and I am now currently doing the IB certificate. I am doing 6 subjects, 4 SL's and 2 Hl's. I dropped Biology HL to SL, it was just too much content for me to handle. Anyways, my question is will I be able to get admitted into a good school? I'm focusing more on Canada than America in terms of schools. I am in my second year of IB and my current score is 26 but I'm trying to push it up. My counselor and I emailed most of my American schools and they mostly said they don't care about whether it's the full diploma or certificate but 1. I don't have very high grades and 2. My SAT score is not that competitive. Right now I seriously feel like I'm not going to get accepted anywhere and my parents will kill me. I'm so disappointed in myself but I'm trying to push through. Please tell me if you think I'll have a shot at getting accepted. Also please feel free to add any schools you would think I have a shot at. For Canada I'm looking at University of Calgary, UBC, Queens, Thompson Rivers, Western University , Brock, York and University of Ottawa. I was also thinking of University of Sydney in Australia but I'm not sure...
  6. Hi my fellow IB classmates I am a Y11 student currently taking my first year of IB (it's been 2 months already as of this post) at an international school in Hong Kong. However, there's a special case for me. Originally, I am leaving for Canada or the United States to continue IB or IB/AP due to the limited subject choices offered here in HK. Due to certain events, I broke my forearm and in the process also severely damaged my ulnar nerves, preventing me to leave as constant medication is required. On the up side, my parents allow me to leave next year to continue IB in Canada or the states but there's some concerns raised from me at this point. Can you only take 1 language&literature subject? Or do you have to do at least 2 from group one? Here are my current choices in HK HL: English Lang&Lit, Geography, Physics SL: Chinese/Cantonese Lang&Lit, Business Management, Math Here is the subject list I wish to alter once I'm there: HL: English Lang&Lit, Geography, Physics SL: Music SL, Business Management, Math Is it possible? Furthermore, what will happen to my Music IA scores and what can I do with the predicted grades I got for Chinese Lang&Lit? Any help/response will do Thanks (sorry for the long passage)
  7. Hello! I'm an Indian IB student looking to study Engineering in the US. You see, I've researched a lot about potential universities but I'm still lacking some match and safety schools and I'm currently extremely doubtful whether the unis I have in mind are a good fit for my strengths. I'd love it if an educational counselor or anybody who knows the US admissions well could message me and help me out. Thank you in advance!
  8. Will someone who lets say gets 24 points be eligible to go to university?
  9. Hi guys, As I want to study economics at a selective university (in U.S) in the future, and I cannot stand taking Math HL at the moment, would it be sufficient to take Math SL combined with AP BC calc? I find Math SL very easy and score 6's/7's frequently (this is since I am repeating one year of the IB), so how hard would it be to shift focus during IB (repeated) year 1 and really study BC calc for almost a semester to take BC exams in spring? In this way I can compete with stronger applicants without having to struggle through the other than calc material in HL Math? Thnx
  10. Hello everyone, Hope you are having a good day Well...I'm going to get straight to the point, I'm scared about whether or not I'll be going to Uni next fall. Basically I'm a full diploma student in a foreign country, my family moves around quite a lot due to my dad's job. I'll be going to 12 Grade next week, so far I'm surviving IB and meeting deadline in terms of EE, CAS, IA's or TOK.. I had terrible to decent marks in 9th & 10th grade, I got mostly 3's,4's,5's and a few 6's (I did the MYP). I switched schools after 10th grade and moved to a new country and honestly It was pretty horrible in the beginning I hated it but I eventually got over it as I realized I'm almost done with school. So much **** happened in 11th grade my first semester was better than my second and I was really motivated at the beginning of the second semester but some stuff happened and i stopped caring, I accept responsibility and I realized how much I've screwed up my life I barely passed my end of year exams but I've worked on myself this past summer, I read ahead, I went over my textbooks and I'm going to be more serious this coming year and make it count! I'm scared no university or college will accept me, my ECA's are varied I have done, vball, tennis, art club, debate team, MUN, and I did an intern ship this summer and I plan to possibly do more this coming semester, my community service works are good too. I'm seriously worried for myself, I can't let my parents down! Especially after they have spent thousands and thousands of dollars on my education and some of my cousins aren't even able to afford school fees. I was really dissapointed in myself and I was actually considering suicide if I don't get admission. Community college is not an option for me. (not that there is any thing wrong with community college). I've been looking at schools in the US and Canada. for Canada I'm looking at: University Manitoba, York University, Western University, Mcmaster, TRU, Ryerson University, Brock University . (I really want to go to UBC or Mcgill but I know it's probably a stretch) for USA : NYU, The New School, Elon, Highpoint, Northeastern, Temple University, Rollins College, Penn State, Arizona State, Washington State, DePaul university and many more. I really want to go to college, I now know myself as a person and I have so much potential, all my teachers say it. I didn't put in the effort back then but I am now. Please, please chance me! please be thoroughly honest. I'm also going to be taking the SAT in October, I took SAT prep classes during the summer and got a 1100 which I've been trying to improve. *UPDATES: I dropped the full IB Diploma, I'm now a certificate student. I got into a few schools... Thompson Rivers University in Canada, Temple University, University of Tampa, Suffolk University and Quinnipiac University in the US. So if anyone else is going through something similar just know that there is hope. I'm just waiting to hear from more Canadian universities as Canadian schools are now my main priority.
  11. I heard that the acceptance rates of IB students into institutions are higher compared to the total population acceptance rates? I wanted to know if this is actually true or not because I also heard that its not...If this is true, does it apply to USA and Canada universities ?
  12. I am planning for this to be a spread where people can post some links on the updates on the positive AND negative impacts of Trump's decision of pulling out of the Paris Climate Change Agreement. I believe that most of the information in this thread will eventually be really useful especially for economics, geography and ESS students so... You're welcome... We can also talk about the claims and counter-claims by Trump and whoever is against Trump... All-in-all I am going to keep on regulating this thread in case I find anything interesting. You guys can post whatever you guys think about it... right now... Thoughts... or maybe ideas on how to help us "stop" or "slow down" climate change.
  13. Hello, I'm an international student currently living abroad doing the IB program. I'm in Grade 11 and I have a few concerns about university. I'm fluent in French but English is my first language. I have plans to study either international relations or psychology in university. I'm very worried that I won't even get admitted into any college or Uni... I messed up in MYP (grades 9 & 10) honestly I didn't think the first two years of high school would be that important. After grade 10 I moved schools, I started out the first semester pretty well I was trying harder but then all of a sudden my grades fell and I don't think I did too well on my end of year exams. I am doing the full IB diploma so I have started my IA's and my EE is going pretty well I haven't missed any deadlines.. I want to know if there is still hope for me to get into a decent university with my lowish grades.. this summer I plan to do nothing but work, I'm getting a tutor for my weaker subjects such as math and bio. Next year I know I can improve but I don't know if it will change anything considering I have already messed up grades 9-11..I'm usually a 4/5 grade student with the occasional 6 or 3. I know I can do so much better though and I'll try my hardest. On the other hand I have good extra curriculars, also this summer I plan on taking SAT classes I'm aiming for at least 1200! I have done MUN I'm on the tennis team Volleyball team Track team Yearbook Debate team I took part in a Global youth summit for international schools (in 2016 and in 2017) And I also have good Community service record due to CAS. I have also volunteered at an animal shelter and an orphanage several times My uni choices so far are: USA: UCLA NYU The New School (NY) Lynn University Loyola Marymount university Roosevelt University DePaul University Wake Forest University Elon University Florida International University Colgate University Northeastern University American University Canada: UBC Uni Manitoba Uni of Toronto Western University Uni of Waterloo York University Queens university Do you think that there is still a chance I can get into these schools if I do better next year? I know next year is senior year and that colleges usually look at junior year the most but please please please give me your inputs. Please note that I'm not applying to all of these schools.. I'm trying to narrow down my list. My Subjects are HL: Literature Biology History SL: Spanish Ab ESS Math studies

I'm starting this topic so as to help people asses their portfolios and what can be done in order to improve their chances of getting into colleges of their choice. I'm really open to solving any of your doubts and have a casual chat if u need one.
  15. Hello, I was wondering if the options I choose in my HL subjects affects my admissions in universities especially USA. For example: I have taken Sets as my option for Math HL, but I was wondering if it affect my admission, because sets is comparatively easy to calculus. Would taking calculus give me an advantage over sets when it comes to applying for colleges? Thank you, Abhishek
  16. Hi, I applied to US university and got offers. When I applied, my transcripts were shown in ib grades and I also gave my predict. The ib policy of the school I want to go is like this: Students in IB programs may receive up to eight semester credits for each higher-level (HL) subject passed with a grade of five or higher. We encourage IB students to earn the full IB diploma. -Those who earn the full IB diploma with 30 or more diploma points may receive eight semester credits for each higher level (HL) subject with grades of five or higher -IB students may receive up to two semester credits for some standard level subjects with grades of five or higher. so does this mean that even if unfortunately I fail to get diploma (hope this won't happen!😕), my offer won't be rescinded since the school just encourage us to earn diploma? Btw, I know us university take seriously on students' senior grade and high school graduation certificate, but my school doesn't grant final grades+ certification based on our final ib results Pretty curious about this question because I heard US universities don't really care if you really get the diploma. They care more about ur gpa and sat and Ib is for credits. Thanks for the reply!!! 😊
  17. Hi all, I am currently applying to the US (fall 2017) and noticed that most of the regular decision application deadlines are in the first week of january, does this refer to the last day to start an application or the last day to send in documents/grades (because our mock grades are released at the end of january/beginning of February as well as the SAT results). Will they still accept my mock grades and end of year report in jan/feb or do i have to be completely finished with the application before the january deadline on their website. Thanks.

Is this subject combo good enough if I want to study econ at top uni's in the US. Econ hl Bio hl english l&l hl Swedish L&l math sl physics sl I want to keep my options open, hence why Im doing bio and econ hl. will it orherwise suffice for ivy's anyway? Is it too "all over the place" and unclear or does it show that i am well rounded+ "strong" in many areas? Btw, are there degrees which combine econ and bio (or just science and economics) as I am inclined towards both areas. Do you have to declare / mention your major when applying to Us colleges? Is math HL required for ivies econ? thanks a lot!!
  19. So it goes like this, I had my IB examination due in May and I got my result on 6th of July. Before IB exams begun, I had already filled the form in order for my result to reach the university I had applied to, I could even see the name of the University on one of the tabs where it showed the list of universities that will be getting my result, however, here is the catch its almost 20 days later now and still my result didn't reach the university. If my result doesn't reach then the university can't process my fee bill and the last date of paying the fee bill is 4th of August which is pretty close. I just wanted to know if IB generally delay's this much as it's really getting me freaked out now and if yes then when should I expect it to be delivered if anyone knows? Thank you in advance
  20. I am currently finishing my first year in the IB diploma. My current grade average is of 90. I am a Mexican student planning on applying to American universities in December. I think we all know that IB is VERY rigorous and I don't know if it is really worth it. The main reason why I'm staying in the diploma is in order to get into a good university. The alternative I have is taking three IB courses (I would choose HL Math, HL History, and SL Information & Technology in a Global Society) and I would probably raise my overall GPA. Do admissions officers really value the full IB diploma instead of just some courses?

  22. When applying to a U.S. university, is it possible to only send your IB score (and IB subject scores)? I am also taking regular classes and getting percentages and letter grades in those, so I have a normal school transcript, but I've been focusing on IB so my grades look pretty bad. I know at some schools you only have to take IB, and you don't even get normal school grades, so would U.S. universities accept only my IB scores? Thanks in advance!
  23. Hi, I have a IA topic in mind, though is it ok to investigate this? To what extent was the invasion of Grenada of 1983 Reagan's Cuban Missile Crisis? / Compare (and contrast) the invasion of Grenada in 1983 to the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. or To what extent was the invasion of Grenada of 1983 in line with the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine of 1905? Would any of these work?
  24. Hey guys, is there a huge difference in the education and future opportunities for employment in the engineering field between these two countries? If I go to the USA, then I'd have to go to a community college in the first two years first/
  25. Hi everyone, i'm planning on doing my EE in English B. I really want to do it on Avatar since it's actually a really controversial movie if you think about it. Back to the point, i'm considering phrasing my research question as follows; "To what extent is Avatar a portrayal of American imperialism and sovereignty?" Do you believe this is maybe a too broad question? Or is it simply not understandable? How should I rephrase it? ---ALSO--- Is it maybe too political? From what I've heard the IBO does not appreciate too political essays. (However I'm going for the originality grade so maybe they enjoy some controversial topics!) Thank you in advance, from a stressed out IB-student in Sweden.
