I'm sorry this reply is so late, I only joined yesterday I also did my essay on music in film I started off with a history of film music, then went into film composer's intents, and then did a study of the music in "The Sea Hawk" (1940) composed by Korngold. It was mostly analysis, but very interesting I suppose it depends what kind of film/music you want to focus on - are you more interested in film scores, or soundtracks? It might be good to pick one of your favourite films, and look at just the music for that film so your essay has some focus.
