Hi guys, can you guys give me advice on my iop thesis? My iop book is A Lesson Before Dying by E. J. Gaines. I really want to incorporate utilitarianism as a topic into my iop. My thesis is "Gaines demonstrates the faulty of the utilitarian's values evidently cause character sufferring because the basis of its roots is unjust." Is this a valid thesis? If not what can i do to make it a valid one?

Your topic for the IOP doesn't actually seem to make any sense, so that would definitely be step 1 to make it a lot better. I honestly don't really know what you're talking about. Perhaps re-word it so that it's written in coherent English and then people will be able to comment!

Also, be wary of talking about philosophical ideas etc. raised by the texts - you have to make sure that you're always analysing the idea in the context of the book and doing plenty of analysis on the text itself. It's perfectly possible to do, but it is a bit of a trap that you can accidentally slide from english literature into just talking about an interesting idea. To score top marks in this sort of thing you want to show awareness of style, symbolism, themes and so on, so the safest route to go down with a presentation is something which will allow you to mention all this stuff.
