desi070496
So I did my world Lit topic and wrote the essay. I showed my teacher and she said that it was fine. But I'm still worried that the Topic is too broad. My question was: What perspective does the Sorrow of War offer on Vietnamese Culture. So basically in my body i talked about how folklore, religion, spirits and ghosts and omens are mentioned throughout the novel. And how it gives us an insight into the culture. So if anyone could offer me some insight on as to if im doing it right or if IB would like the paper. TykeDragon
How many words was it? If you could fit it into the word count and not think it was seriously lacking that's a good sign. Having lots of things you could pull out from the book and analyse would show good interaction and knowledge of the book, for that criteria. Make sure you have enough analysis - which is where an issue of the question may arise - it seems a little weak... maybe more along the lines of how vietnamese culture is used to further a theme or character in the book, like 'to what extent is Vietnamese folklore/culture used' for something?Although, I know little about Vietnamese culture or this book. Sorry! 1 Reply
Arrowhead
I think your essay is probably fine, you just need to tweak the wording of your RQ at this point. Perhaps focus on which aspects of Vietnamese culture the literary devices in the book explored (you've done this in the essay, just succinctly mention it in your RQ) and feel free to say things such as "allusions to Vietnamese folklore and beliefs in the book [name] gives us an insight into [particular aspect] of Vietnamese culture." 1 Reply
desi070496
Well the essay is about like 1463 words and i basically just analyzed the quotes in which the book mentions the aspect of culture and analyzed how the tone and sentence structure portrayed the aspect of culture. But i'm not exactly sure how to put the aspects in my rq without it sounding extremely broad. Because this is what I came up with: What perspective does the sorrow of war offer on Vietnamese culture regarding spirits, omens, folklore and religion? Andi think that sounds too drawn out.
