so when a question asks you to deduce something, do you have to show the working out in order to get the full points?

Check the syllabus for the command terms and what is expected from each subject. For example, if "deduce" is used in Math HL, then the syllabus states that you should "reach a conclusion from the information given". So to answer your question, yes, you should show the working out in order to get the full points.

I remember seeing a question with 'Deduce' in my Biology test the other day. It was about the blood groups and they gave you some information. I didn't show my work and I got full marks, since it is something you infer. You need to analyze the data in order to reach the answer.
