lbb
Hi everybody,I just started the IB two weeks ago. My extended essay won't be due until christmas, but I want to get started on it. My question is, is it possible to write about a play? I was thinking about Our Town, by Thornton Wilder. I wouldn't do it as a Theatre Extended essay, I would want to do it as a Group 2, Category 3 EE. Is that possible? Reply
Guest Marie Feldhoff
I think you could do it in category 2, if it's a play, put it in the right cultural context. Or if it's a book (drama), in category 3, make sure it's written in your target language then you're all fine. Best would be to read the subjet guide, and ask your supervisor/teacher or EE coordinator. It helps a lot to read former Extended Essay as a guide line so that you get an expression of what you're about to do. Category 1: languageThe essay should be a specific analysis of the language (its use, structure and so on) normally related to its cultural context or a specific text. Category 2: culture and society A: essays of a sociocultural nature with an impact on the languageThe essay should be an analysis of a cultural nature that describes the impact of a particular issue on the form or use of the language. B: essays of a general cultural nature based on specific cultural artifactsThe essay should be an analysis of a more general cultural nature but specific to a country or community where the language is spoken. Topics that are too broad and could apply to many cultures (like globalization, the death penalty or eating disorders) are inappropriate.Essays of a general cultural nature must be based on specific cultural artifacts. Cultural artifacts in this context are understood to include a wide variety of phenomena, ranging from works of fine art to newspapers, magazines and cartoons, to films, television programmes and popular music. Category 3: literatureThe essay should be an analysis of a literary type, based on a specific work or works of literature exclusively from the target language. In the case of a comparison of texts, alltexts must originally have been written in the target language."Good Luck! Marie! Reply
lbb
thanks for your answer.I might have made a mistake, I think the Essay will be a Group 1 EE. So if I would want to do a Group 1 EE on "Our Town," would this play be considered literature so that I could write a Category 1 or 2 Essay about it?
