r1111
Recently it's been found that pornography is addicting and there are also a bunch of porn addiction forums and such such as Reddit's No Fap which are becoming famous. Do you believe the negative effects of porn on society are too much and that governments should restrict porn? Apparently porn is illegal for children in many countries yet porn is hardly a simple type and enter away. Should porn be regulated just like other demerit goods like alcohol? Or do you believe that pornography is harmless and isn't causing any problems? In that case, do you think that porn addiction is more of a bad habit more than anything else? I believe that governments should restrict porn on the internet by first making sure it's not free so that it requires a credit card to access these sites. I think porn clearly shows a degrading moral standards of societies and that it does cause many problems. I am curious as to what others think. 1 Reply

I think some forms of pornography should be heavily regulated like child porn. Especially violent child porn. There have been enough cases of child molesters who go on to commit horrendous crimes mimicking the material they see. I'm not saying ALL child molesters have watched some, but I just feel it's too easy to access this kind of material. Reply

Award Winning Boss
No. Stuff like CP already is banned (since it's illegal). The legal stuff shouldn't be banned by internet providers since it isn't the job of the government to parent children to that extent. Plus, underage teens are just going to us proxy servers to get round it. Normal pornography are just films with naked people in them. 1 Reply
Emmi
No. There are better things to monitor/regulate than porn. Most people will find a way to get around any kind of ban a website or government puts out anyways.Besides, a ban on porn will probably make a lot of horny men quite displeased, and I can't give my significant other that kind of attention all the time. 4 Reply

Popular Post yii yann
Never. There is nothing wrong with porn, except in very few cases (CP, "real rape" pornos, necrophilia, etc). The majority of porn is just a bunch of naked people bumping uglies, sometimes without even doing that. There are all kinds of fetishes portrayed, and it is laughable if everyone here claimed they didn't have at least one "deviant" sexual fantasy. This is okay. Most people like watching porn as a recreational thing, while having a ****, looking around because of curiosity, etc. There is nothing wrong with it. However, one of the problems that have risen due to porn is an addiction to it. This is a problem with people, not with porn itself. Do we ban food because there are gluttons? Stop airing TV because lots of kids are destroying their vision by watching it 24/7? No, we try to get the people to stop doing it. That should be the focus here. Watching porn is not a bad habit. Just like having consensual sex is not a bad habit. However, letting it rule your life, affect your life negatively, destroy relationships, etc... That is bad. OP said it clearly shows degrading moral standards and causes problems. What moral standard has it degraded? Showing that its okay for two or more adults to get together and have sex? As opposed to the "high" moral standards of yore, when powerful men had large harems, killed off the women who weren't sexually satisfying anymore, and took young daughters from families to have sex with? Or are you talking about the moral standard where a man has the ability ("right") to sleep with loads of women, while their wives stayed at home, sexually repressed. You are wrong. Porn has shown lots of people that its okay to have sex, to want to have sex and that fetishes are normal. Unless you believe repression is a sign of a high moral standard, porn has NOT degraded any moral standard. I'm a woman, and I think porn is awesome. 10 Reply
Guest ryuk1
Well, they can't even if they want to (considering that access to porn is quite easy) and they shouldn't. Demerit goods(too much microeconomics?) make life enjoyable, smoking, drinking etc and watching porn is any human's right. Except for child porn. Besides, porn is the only leisure of Turkish males. Royster Zhang
It's kind of annoying how the society's morals are interfering with the society's ability to infer. "Child porn" leads to child rapists and sadists, true, but what have "regular" pornography types been doing to our society? Most rapes nowadays are caused by an already-heavy porn addiction. In comparison to child porn/child molesters, "normal" porn/adult rapists have a much more positive correlation. So just because child porn is unethical to the society, it should be banned, while banning "regular" porn is a breach of human rights?I do agree, however, banning porn once at for all is too brusque a law. The government should do something about its proliferation, though, like what they do on the cover of most cigarette packets. If a guy is entering a porn website he would have to see a statement "Porn has been proven to be highly addictive, a cause of social anxiety, ADHD, erectile dysfunction, and many other issues. Are you sure you would want to enter this?" 2 Reply

Lots of people regularly watch porn without a problem. You want to start sticking warnings on everything? Why don't we just discourage people from driving, lifting heavy weights, etc. In fact, why not close down every casino and club you see? That way people will be safer right? It is a select minority that causes all the problems. It is much smarter to deal with THEM specifically, than to label an entire industry as "dangerous". 2 Reply
Arrowhead
I think what is needed is education about the ill effects of excessive exposure to pornography, the effect on young people's brains by having fapped to porn regularly from a young age, how it could affect their future relationships, their ability to be intimate, cause them to have a predilection to violent/abnormal sex, etc. Once the individual has been educated of the risks involved, if he/she chooses to go out and use porn, well that is his/her business. It is not the responsibility of government, nor anyone else, to save someone from himself/herself. We are (presumably) autonomous people in an autonomous society, in the age of the internet no information is impossible to find, we have and should continue to have the freedom to make informed choices.Of course it goes without saying that child/non-consensual sex-based porn should be banned unquestionably. Black Bird Lockheed
It should be restricted. I am definitely sure that people would not like their partner to see these sites. This creates a distraction and addiction among many people. I feel it should be banned completely. Well, having a sexual intercourse with a child is illegal, whereas it is not illegal to have a sexual intercourse with a an adult woman. So yeah, it is ok to have sex with a woman and it is not ok to have sex with a child. Sex is a natural, healthy part of most relationships and there is nothing wrong about it. I don't exactly see why porn is any different to anything else. Some get addicted to alcohol, some drink it in moderation and enjoy it, some people get addicted to cigarettes, others have one every few months when on a night out, some get addicted to gambling, some just play roulette once a year on holiday in Monaco. We can't ban porn just because some people get addicted to it. Alcoholism has a bad effect on family, relationships, all that jazz, and I somehow can't see it being banned any time soon. I guess we all remember how well prohibition worked in the US. 3 Reply

I suggest you go watch a TED video called The Great Porn Experiment, which basically describes an experiment sociologists conducted upon college students on pornography. They actually couldn't find a control group of students as they couldn't find any guy who doesn't watch porn. Porn itself is not like alcohol and gambling at all. I would go as far as to say it's the new opium of today. In fact, I would challenge any guy here who thinks they watch porn "Only in moderation" to go off it entire for 50 days. If you can do it, I take what I said back. PS As for the **** part, I thought he meant to say rape...Sorry about that. Reply

You can do all that without any moral scruple. EVEN THEN there is an age restriction. As for porn, can you just show it around in a family meeting as a form of entertainment? Unless you grow up in an extremely licentious family that promotes such actions, I don't think you could. AND the government is doing NOTHING on the age restriction, which was what I had said. I didn't say we should ban it, but we need to warn people, especially those who are underage. 1 Reply
