Terminator
Hey guys, So I'm still doing my research into finding novel (s) that I want to do for my English EE? Are there any that you suggest? Or ones that you thought were quite interesting and contained enough 'literary meat'? Or even if you could give me some tips on how to get started into picking books (rather than reading the entire library!) that would be helpful thanks Reply
Maple
Do you have any direction right now? Are you doing a comparative essay? Contemporary/Modern Literature? Classics? Reply

Maple
Are there any types of genres in particular that you enjoy reading? Stick to those genres, because you will need to become very, very familiar with the work(s) on which you choose to write. You should definitely choose novels that aren't overdone. Overdone includes (1984 & other dystopian fiction, Jane Eyre, Jane Austen's Novels). Though the novel you choose should still have some 'literary credibility' - no twilight When I started my EE, I read many books from this list. But I also chose to read some great Canadian Novels such as: Fall on Your Knees, Someone Knows My Name, The English Patient and In the Skin of a Lion. Anyway, you should read quite a few works before you settle on what you want. When you finally read the right book, you will know it Edited July 30, 2014 by Maple 4 Reply
Daenerys
Hello! Try reading some of the winning and shortlisted novels on the Booker's List in the recent years! That is where I found my EE novel from. All the best! Reply
Erudite
Daenerys makes a really good suggestion. I also suggest browsing through the Pulitzer Prize winning novels in the fiction section here. They clearly have 'literary merit' so you don't have to worry about that. Best of luck! Reply
Fox smith
I would recommend something contemporary, maybe Donna Tartt´s The Golfinch, in case your interested in art, David Foster Wallace´s The broom of the system for something weird but funny as well as serious and reflective, or (again DFW) The Pale King, a recent unfinished novel, published posthumously that deals with the theme of boredom, in case you want a more novel topic. If you´re not into contemporary stuff, then The island of dr Moreau, by HG Wells, which is a strong novel, by a famous author, but not well known by the public. In a similar vein, some of Jack London´s less known works (The Scarlet Plague, The Iron Heel, dealing respectively with an apocalyptic near destruction of humanity and the restart of civilization, that shows the wretched human nature, or a socialist movement, written from a different perspective than usual). Dark Humor your thing? Kurt Vonnegut´s entire ouvre, Slaughterhouse-five, Breakfast of Champions, Galapagos, and Deadeye **** are the ones I would probably recommend the most. Oh, and of course Cat´s Cradle for a hilarious end to humanity. Retelling of greek myths can be an interesting place to start, Autobiography of Red is probably my favourite book, although its a bit odd (its verse novel) and is so, so emotive, can´t help but cry. If you like crime stories, detectives, anything of the sort, and are looking for something considered high literature, Paul Aster´s New York trilogy, Reply
