Art HL

Recommended Posts

So, school hasn't start for me yet but I'm really nervous for IB. I picked Art HL and two things are bothering me. First, I haven't decided on whether I should do option A or B because I don't really understand the differences between the two. And second, I'm really worried about having a theme that will unify all my studiowork/project. Because I have come up with 3 to 4 ideas for a theme, and I have like 3 themes I'm considering right now. Should there only be one theme throughout or I can have several themes?

thank you in advance:)

A: Your art will be graded externally (in a different school/country), and it will be worth 60% of your IB grade. Your research book will be worth 40% and will be graded internally.

B: The opposite of A. Your research book is graded externally and worth 60%, and your art is graded internally (by your teacher) and worth 40%.

As for the themes, you can have more than one, but I wouldn't have more than two dominant ones if I were you. My two themes are humor and math... very different themes, but integrating them into my artwork has been working well. Of course, the IB usually likes ones that are more like "diversity" or "culture" or things that sound more international.

Since Thrashmaster's already answered the two main questions, I'm going to just add to his third.

No, you definitely don't need one theme! what the IBO wants is an evolution of you as an artist, so basically an increase in the quality of your work, from the start of IB1 to the end of IB2. It's perfectly fine to juggle 3/4 themes as long you find a way of integrating them, and of course, you can switch topics you like any time!

My theme was communication/perception of an item :)

I feel you ^^ I'm also starting my first year and I have the same problem, whether to choose option A or B...

Good job thinking about themes and good luck with everything! :)
