Um, it's not a choice. You have to write a single Works in Translation paper that counts as your 'IA' for English. You also have an Oral Presentation and Oral Commentary, though the latter is externally moderated so is not really an IA.

 

I think by 'IAs' you mean to say practice commentaries and essays in English class. The answer to that is, it depends. I probably wrote 10-15 full commentaries in 2 years of the IB including for final exams and such. Other people practised more in their free time.

 

If your skill with commentaries is good and you're confident in your ability to write IB English essays, then practising the odd one or two commentaries and essays over the holidays outside of regular school work is more than enough.
