Math SL or Math Studies?

Recommended Posts

Guest

Hi everyone!

I've recently entered a new school which previously taught a different Math curriculum compared to my old school... I've missed out on some of the knowledge and skills.

I've done well in the first quarter of the year, being at the top five of the class. However, since I've never liked Math before, I kinda slacked off the second quarter and did very poorly. Plus, there were things I didn't learn in my old school that weren't clearly explained by my teacher and there was limited time to how much I can do the exercises... and so I've failed the last two tests.

I'm thinking of whether or not if I should drop from Math SL to Studies... Math SL is required in many majors in university and I want to stay there to keep my options open, but I really hate doing Math! Also, one thing that's keeping me from going to Studies is because what I failed wasn't what I had background knowledge in.

Any opinion on this?

I'd advise you to stay in SL. Some unis require it and anyway it is more desirable. Well, depending on the course you want to do as well. But I would just tell you to try harder, learn all the things you weren't taught and it will probably solve all your problems. Do some independent studying over the winter break to catch up and you'll be fine :)

Do you know what you're planning to study afterwards? Because if you are 100 percent sure that it has nothing to do with Maths (especially since you don't like it) then you can drop to Maths Studies, and tbh universities look more at the final IB score than your subjects. So, if you think you may do very poorly in Maths SL maybe you should move down. But if you think it was just because you had no experience, and that you can cope with Maths SL, then you should stay and keep your options open for like an Economics or something :)

Good luck!

I think Psychology or Education-related.

Thank you for your advice :D
