SL French B Paper 1

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Here's a discussion for French B Paper 1. I was SL. I think it was harder than normal :( Normally I'm quite good at Paper 1 and I'm sure of most my answers but for those paper I wasn't too sure on some.

In particular, I messed up a true or false (the woman's capacity to adapt and whether she can avoid or escape poverty). I put false because I thought échapper meant escape and so that she fell into poverty in the first place, but éviter meant avoid so she didn't fall into it. Overthinking I guess. The other true vrai/faux were both true I think.

For the meaning of voire, I put et meme cause that's it's normal meaning but it didn't seem to go. I put jamais first, but then I switched to voire.

Also for en quete de, I put au courant de even though I knew it should have been a recherche de because I thought they were trying to trick us with enquete meaning survey and recherche meaning research :(

The rest was good though I think. For the one that said what does he mean when he says, pour finir la misere, il faut qu'on évite que les gens deviennent pauvres? I was stuck between B and D. B was we should address the main causes of poverty, and D was if we are poor, we cannot avoid being miserable. I thought B didn't address the misere part, but later i found out misere can kinda mean poverty in itself.

What did you guys think?

I thought it was horrible  -_- but I'm extremely terrible at french so take my thoughts with a grain of salt.

Were all the vrai/faux questions vrai.  I think I put vrai for two of them and faux for the other. I totally guessed on those. My justifications were correct I think.

I put en meme for voire as well. Although I guessed on it, I just looked, and they have the same meaning  I would think that is the right answer.

I put "recherche de" for "en quete de"

The newspaper one, text C I believe, was really horrible.

I put all of the true/false ones as true and I felt quite confident in that.

I had trouble with the pauvrete question too I put B for that because there was no direct indication that poverty = misery because earlier he said that poverty is relative (first paragraph).

Do you guys remember the question where we had to match up meanings where one word sounded something like boulevard? It might be the same one you mentioned but I'm not sure. I had quite a bit of trouble with that one and I ended up putting construit and detruit lendement for the first two butI was guessing at that point

do you mean the word "boulverse"? i still have no idea what it means, and to tell you the truth-- i'd rather not find out (as i probably missed that answer)

also: I put all of the vrai/faux questions as vrai-- i'm feeling good about that.

But, did anyone notice the abundance of B answers in the multiple choice?

I think that was way different than any of the past/practice paper 1's :( It was a lot harder to use context to help answer, 70% of the words in the matching section I had never seen before, I got a 7 on one of the practice papers, but this one I'd be happy to get 5.

I found it much harder than any practice papers I'd done, but since it seems that most people feel that way, perhaps the curve will work very well in our favor!

I put all the vrai/faux questions as true as well. I was unsure because I thought the paper was tricking me and I expected there to be at least one false but it seems others got all true as well :P

I got confused on the synonyms... I put voire as 'detruit lundement' because I had no idea what it meant :(

Bouleverse is perturbe :$ I learned that from old past papers.

Voire was et meme. Grignote was detruit lentement :$

I hope boundaries go down this year!

I'm trying to remember any other questions. For the last text, about TV, and linking each of the 4 characters to what they said. Lea (the first one) said when she was younger she'd have loved to eat and watch TV at the same time. Anne-Charlotte (the second one) said a high volume makes it difficult for conversations to occur. Sylvain (the third one) said that in his home, people don't give importance to meals and it's not much of a family occasion. The last one (i forgot her name) said that cooking and eating together is pleasurable.

Did you guys get that?

I fell into the stupid trap of thinking they all can't be true :(

voire was et meme i'm pretty sure cuz they used it again in one of the other passages

yah hopefully boundaries will go down paper 1 boundaries always too high

en quete de - i thought of it as "in the quest of" so "in the search of" thus "rechercher"

Boulverse will forever be a word that I will hate :P

Yeah, I got the answers that you got for the TV texte... that was one of the texts that i found the hardest because the questions required more reflection and less looking into the text for exact quotes to support your answer.

Was French a one year course for you guys? Cause now I have year two with two less exams to take

Nope, I took it as a 2 year course. We don't do 1 year courses much outside the US or Canada :$

Quoting from a phone is really confusing. But to Ossih, for the quesions about TV, I thought that the second person said that she has the TV on a lower volume but they still don't talk as a family so then regardless of volume, the TV would not promote conversation? I honestly don't remember what I put but I think I eliminated the answer you mentioned as an option.

For Sylvain I think I said that he/she doesn't force people to eat together or something like that. I got the same answers for the other 3 people though.

For Lea, I put that she found eating together pleasurable because in the text it stated that as she grew older and became more mature,  she realized the importance of eating together as a family? Although now that I think of it,  Ossih's answer is right as well. I may have missed that option entirely arghh D:

Um the option said that having the volume NOT low does not promote conversation I think. So ours was the same option I believe :$ I don't remember though.
