Lynn Gweeny
Hi, I'm doing my Math HL IA on finding the volume and surface area of a frustum (from a cone). I'm determining the volume in three ways, out of which one is integration. I'm calculating the surface area in two ways, one of which uses integration too. However, though the formula for surface area is out of the HL syllabus, I feel like this is a very simple idea, and might not fulfill the 'Use of Mathematics' criterion as formulae for the volume and S.A. is available online. My Math teacher says this is sophisticated enough, though I feel the opposite. I would like an opinion on this topic and whether I can do anything else to make this topic more sophisticated. Thanks in advance! Reply
kw0573
"Use of math" also needs math from multiple chapters/aspects, eg complex numbers and calculus, and not just calculus (area of a circle does not count because it is a pre-requisite and not part of the syllabus). Lynn Gweeny
Okay, so you're saying I need to include topics apart from calculus? Reply
kw0573
For your topic, yes thats what I mean. In general the HL IA will be penalized for focusing on just one branch of math. Reply
Lynn Gweeny
Oh okay, thank you. If you wouldn't mind my asking, what other topics do you think I could include in the IA? Or other ideas to make it complex? I'd like a tiny idea or something - I can build something off of that. Reply
kw0573
When you look at the other 5 math units, (Algebra, Functions, Trig, Vectors, Stats/Prob), which can you most easily integrate? Reply
Lynn Gweeny
Algebra and trigonometry are the easiest to integrate. Reply
