flumpool
Hi! I'm currently a sophomore and in the process of making my schedule next year. Now, I'm not very good at math. I usually spend 2 hours studying math at home everyday, yet I still got a B past semester. I was recommended to take the BC Calculus course in 11th grade, which would lead to IB Math HL in 12th grade. However, another pathway I can do is AB Calc (IB Math SL) in 11th grade, which would lead to AP Stat/BC Calc in 12th grade. BC Calc has 9 units, while AB Calc covers 6 units. I want to say again that I'm not very good at math. Here are my questions: - Which pathway should I take? - I have yet to decide on my career, but dietitian, computer science, and maybe graphic designer have been on my mind. Would taking HL Math be useful to any of those? - Does taking HL Math heighten my admission rates? Since I'm not a math person, if taking the HL Math(BC Calc) route does not really help getting into colleges compared to the AB Calc route, I would rather not take it. Please give me advice on how I should go about this. Thank you! Reply
SC2Player
For computer science, HL math is highly beneficial. For being a dietitian or graphic designer, SL math is sufficient in most cases (HL might help a little in graphic design, but I don't think it'd help much). In terms of admission, it mostly hinges on the course you're applying for. Some courses either require or recommend HL math, while others don't care much either way. Overall, SL math is a safer option, especially if you're going for a career that isn't heavily math-based. 1 Reply
