Ivan Zhang
Hey guys I want to do my EE on bio and I am wondering if it is possible to use mice that are mutated to have type 1 diabetes. Besides this mutation there is nothing else I see that would cause ethical conerns for the experiment I am going to conduct Reply
My2ndAngelic
According to IB Experimental Policy: "Any planned and actual experimentation involving animals must be subject to approval following a discussion between teacher and student(s) based on the IB animal experimentation policy." So as long as you have your supervisor's approval, everything is OK. Reply
Ivan Zhang
Yes but it also says: Any experimentation should not result in any pain or undue stress on any animal (vertebrate or invertebrate) or compromise its health in any way. Therefore experiments that administer drugs or medicines or manipulate the environment or diet beyond that easily tolerated by the animal are unacceptable I am wondering if it would violate this as well? mac117
Just now, Ivan Zhang said: Yes but it also says: Any experimentation should not result in any pain or undue stress on any animal (vertebrate or invertebrate) or compromise its health in any way. Experiments involving animals must be based on observing and measuring aspects of natural animal behaviour. Any experimentation should not result in any pain or undue stress on any animal (vertebrate or invertebrate) or compromise its health in any way. The last few few words are the key. You'd compromise the mice's health, and you are not allowed to do that. For this reason I am almost certain you are not allowed to use mice. 2 Reply
Ivan Zhang
Even if the mice are mutated by the facility where they come from? Reply
Ivan Zhang
Also, what if I have the ethics license? Reply

Yes, the mice's health would still be compromised, regardless of where you get them from. 27 minutes ago, Ivan Zhang said: Also, what if I have the ethics license? I'm not sure what that is, but IB doesn't be seeming to be making any exceptions or mentioning a license. Reply
My2ndAngelic
But you can use simulation instead, right? Is there a simulation for that? Reply
Ivan Zhang
I don't think so. I guess I'll do something else for my lab Reply
