Tharikaa
Hello! I'm currently doing my IB year 1 and it's time for us to decide universities. I want to do Marketing and management in the UK, and I take math studies. As far as I checked pretty much all the universities I want to apply to say math SL/math studies, but some of my friends keep saying that eventually universities would place an offer for a person with Math SL instead of a person with math studies. So my question is, do universities prefer math SL candidates over math studies even thought they accept math studies? Reply
inriya
Unfortunately, in the reality yes. Math SL is preferred more than Math Studies because it does show more of your ability in doing maths. (Not discriminating anyone who is doing Studies). E.g: If there's 2 candidates with same PG, they did all the same subjects except for maths, the university will prefer someone who did Math SL than Studies, especially: Economics and Management, Accounting and Finance, E&F, BBA, etc. Reply

Because I'm planning on applying to only marketing and marketing management courses Reply

Especially if you're getting 7s in Studies. I was predicted a 5 in Studies, and I know someone who applied for a similar course to me with SL predicted 6, and I got an offer and they didn't. Personal statements/application essays are way more important 1 Reply

For marketing, I'd say it couldn't matter any less what your Maths level is, but Management is likely to have at least a bit of maths in it, so you might want to check if the universities you're applying to are happy with studies. 1 Reply
