TheSeventhSloth
Hello everybody, I am about to start the IB Diploma course in September and have some time to confirm my subject choices. I wish to pursue software engineering and am sure about that. My current subjects are : Math, Physics and Computer Science HL Business Management, English Lang. & Lit. , Spanish ab initio The problem is whether or not I should choose chemistry. I'm not bad at chemistry(at least based on my 10th grade results) but I don't particularly like it either. If I choose it, I'll have to give up Computer Science which is the subject I really want to study. So my question is whether or not I need to take chemistry for software engineering. I haven't decided on a specific university(but I want to study in the US or Canada) but I want to know if chemistry is necessary in general. VeronicaG
If you want to do engineering in Canada, you need Grade 12 chemistry. Even if it's software. Computer science is very similar and does not require chem in most cases. There's some really good comp sci programs in Canada too Reply
TheSeventhSloth
So without chemistry I have no chance of getting in? What about the US? Reply
VeronicaG
Yup that's right (but you can still major in Comp Sci without chem). US admissions are outside my area of expertise, but you can google it yourself. Reply

Many Canadian universities accept a decent SAT Chemistry subject test score. You may want to double check with particular schools of interest to you. I generally do support HLs in Math/Chem/Physics because usually computer science is not a requirement for many many schools, and most university freshman computer science classes are not very hard or aiming at eliminating students.
