EXTENDED ESSAY

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I am interested if according to the new guide(i haven't found this information) you MUST NOT write an ABSTRACT OR if IT IS OPTIONAL, AND STILL NOT INCLUDED INTO THE WORD COUNT. I don't know but i think it could add to the overall focus of my essay. If anyone knows pls let me know.

Thanks in advance!

I swear that in IB's quest to eliminate rote-learning they're just making life more stressful for everyone involved. Looking through the guide, there's literally no mention of the abstract in anyway shape or form. On page 81, there's a table that indicates what is and isn't on the word count, and the abstract is not mentioned there either - it's just been eliminated from the criteria. However, I'd probably say not to take the risk and not write an abstract, because they might throw it in with an introduction (though that would be a jerk move entirely) - from their criteria, it feels like they're saying you should be focusing your essay in the introduction and in your research question itself, but I'm really unsure.

Have you asked your supervisor or IB Co-ordinator about this? I feel like they're going to give you more accurate information than we can drudge up from the IB document.

My EE is in English and my supervisor said an abstract isn't necessary. I'd avoid it because of confusion in word count as well as having to work more!

Basically the abstract serves the same purpose as your intro but has an added conclusion. And as mine is in English, I need a thesis statement (I believe it's a good idea for an essay in any subject) which is very similar to a conclusion.

So, if you have the urge to do something abstract-like you can follow the following:

Intro: background info + what you believe/thesis statement/hypothesis

Body: discuss your thesis statement by analysing things

Conclusion: Simply state your hypothesis was correct/partly correct/(very rarely) wrong

BUT REMEMBER: if it's an experimental sciences EE, the format is a bit more solid and specified

Thanks guys for the advice, I asked my librarian and also she said it will most likely be included in the word count if I write it, but that I can still write one without sending it. It could be just for me and my supervisor to have a better overview. My EE is in bio so I hoped I could make it look like a real research paper, but I'm certainly not gonna risk my grade because of that, but also for others- YOU CAN WRITE AN ABSTRACT FOR YOURSELF BUT DON'T SUBMIT IT!
