Mercantillism

Recommended Posts

As some of you know, Europeans in the 1500s were really into mercantillism; governments protecting markets and waging wars and such to expand their trade powers.

Nowadays Mercantillism doesn't exist anymore. But what exactly replaced it? Was it Capitalism, Laissez-Faire, comparative advantages or what?

What exactly replaced it has to be 'Mixed Economies' because they aren't totally laisez faire, capitalistic or controlled but have features of all of them and more. Economies now try to expand still but not by wars or anything but by a mix of trade. They also still protect economies but not by war but by less aggressive tactics like tariffs, subsidies, Import Regulations and quotas etc... You can't define economies now with one specific attribute but with many as all economies are a mixture of everything else and the definitions have become a blur.
