I am worried about originality of my Extended Essay topic in biology.

I have a big problem with procrastination, and so I already failed to turn my original topic in on time (which turned out to be impossible to carry out anyways), and now I am looking for another one (don't worry, I won't be asking you for it), I need to turn it in with an outline and bibliography.

I was probably too stubborn and too ambitious to choose biology, as I don't even have it on SL, but oh well. Right now I'm trying to design an experiment, am interested in learning about plants and/or their ability to sense and remember information. I found great research about it by M. Gagliano, and tried to come up with an experiment of my own, but everything I wrote so far seemed far too similar to the studies she's done already. From what I know, these studies are pretty new and the topic was not extensively researched before, but I am scared that my idea will be deemed too unoriginal, and it will not make sense to carry it out.

Does anyone have any advice on:

1. how to come up with an experiment that is both original and possible to carry out,

2. how to not fall into despair when the deadline is approaching you like an angry T-rex

3. how to produce space in your house for 60 or so seedlings?

Please and thank you, anyone that responds.

OMG! I've *literally* been facing the same issue AND the funny thing is that I also want to do something on plant cognition and bio-acoustics but because of the limited research material available, it's getting really hard to be creative to delve into the exploration of the topic. Anything I try to come up with is basically on-going research and seems a little too far fetched for a Bio EE. Initially planned on doing the EE in Chem but oh well, seems a Chem EE is harder so sticking with the Bio. Honestly I'd really really appreciate some help regarding the same topic as well

(is this how you respond on here?)

Anyways, I actually solved this problem, and am doing that, I just mashed up the methods that I saw used into one that would be doable, while possibly scientifically accurate. I planned an experiment, and boy, was it a relief to hand in that paper. Now only to execute and write this bad gal!

I could send you some useful/interesting research if you want! I mean, let's not write the same essay XD (I'm writing on the influence of high frequency sound volume on seedlings), but perhaps you would be inspired, or at least gain knowledge about the topic?

Plants respond to the leaf vibrations of herbivores chewing:

Sound positively influencing health and immunity of plants:

An overwiew of the research on the influence of sound on plants (THIS!):

Roots can locate water only by sound(doc. Gagliano is so effin cool, I love her research, there are also the ones on learning and memory in plants it's so cool!) :

Plants can use sound as a defense mechanism:

An overwiew of the research on the influence of music on plants:

Haha, good luck on your EE! That's an interesting topic and I'm glad you could come up with it (well at least someone's getting their **** together)

Thanks a tonne for the links, I'll make sure to have a look at all of them! Looks like they're gonna get me to a better place if not immediately help me formulate a topic ( something that is definitely not gonna have us write the same essay xD ) I kinda have a rough idea of what I'm going to be doing, thanks to browsing through 487 websites a day, hehe! Thinking of doing something that involves sound frequencies' effect on changes in a particular gene's expression but my research question is not quite focused and I haven't come up with an idea for what gene I'll be doing the EE on. Fingers crossed to start off ASAP!

Also yes, that's how you reply to people here :D

Oh, cool! If you want to focus the topic- try to find out if there is research that suggests that gene could possibly change, and remember it has to be something measurable, and possible to do for you. The best of luck on your essay too! Let us all get trough this safe, sound, well-slept, and mentally healthy!
