IBstudentE
So I just had my 11DP mock exams and I got a 5 in my English compare and contrast essay. I don't feel totally disappointed, but I feel like I can get a better grade if I just knew how to improve myself. My teacher doesn't really teach us anything :)))) like what to do differently. I can't get a copy of the mock paper to post here, but in general, do you guys have any tips? I would like to see myself doing better in the future. Graystripe
This is an outline for everything you need to include in a paper 1, provided by my teacher. It's for SL, so only one text, but you could probably apply it to a compare and contrast essay as well. Paragraph #1 Introduction Needs to Include: Who is the author? What I the title of the text? What is the text type? Where/when was it published? What/who does the text target and how does it do this? (audience) What is the author trying to achieve and share? (purpose) Give a brief context/content What will you discuss and how will you discuss it: Thesis (scope and sequence) Paragraph #2 needs to include: Sentence to introduce the Content of the text? Details about what you think the text is about, back up with proof from the text? What is the major topic and what do you learn from that in text? Add details from the text to prove what you are thinking. Are there any literary devices that are used to help you understand the theme? Example of that literary device from the text. Closing statement that links this paragraph to the thesis and the message/purpose Paragraph #3 needs to include: Sentence to introduce the tone of the text to the target audience Proof from the text to support your thoughts about the tone How does the tone effect/share the mood of the text to the target audience Proof from the text that support your thoughts about the mood Closing sentence about how this connects back to the thesis and the message/purpose, how does it support your thoughts? Paragraph #4 needs to include: Introduce the stylistic devices that are being used to support your thesis (at least 2-3). What kinds of linguistic tools does he/she uses? First device, how it is working in the text to support your thesis Proof of this first device from the text Second device, how it is working in the text to support your thesis Proof of this first device from the text Third device, how it is working in the text to support your thesis Proof of this first device from the text The Effect of the stylistic features on the reader/audience How does the author use language to convey a sentiment or message, connecting back to the thesis and the message/purpose? Paragraph #5 needs to include: How is the text organized, literally (i.e. layout/formatting)? What kinds of structural elements of a particular text type do you see? Proof from the text to support your ideas about the formatting and structure? (describe things if need be) How do these Structure choices made by the author support the thesis and the message/purpose? Paragraph #6 Conclusion Restate your thesis and discuss how it is proved by what you shared above. Recap the major points of your essay (Content, theme, literary devices, tone/mood and structure demonstrate/convey/show/support… the thesis and the message/purpose. Link back to the target audience and the effectiveness of the text. Reply

Hi, Graystripe adds an excellent structural approach. I would only add that understanding ToK to better frame your arguments/points/voice is crucial to scoring in the 6-7 range. Message me if you want to hear more. Cheers, Rob Reply
