Business & Management VS Economics

Recommended Posts

I'm taking both (B&M HL and Econ HL)

You can use what you learn in Business for example to apply it to your company. It also improves your analysis skills a lot..

While econ uses 'real life' examples.. I mean that we talk about markets, sales, demand and quantity etc..

It depends on what you want to take as a major though :P

It is not easy! I am also taking These two subject HL. With economics it is not hard because you have just to learn everything but with business... you have to learn and then use it to answer the questions. At economics you will have to write 4 commentaries. It is not hard, if you want I can send useful links on how to write it) Physics HL? Whom do you want to become?

That depends really. Business is more focused on what goes in an organisation rather than looking more broadly, like economics. Economics looks at more what happens outside an organisation and how funds are transferred and is more linked to government-type of things. See what interests you more.

it depends on you for example if you consider to be an entrepreneur or any manager in a firm, then i would suggest to go for business management, and if you are planning to go for any other except these then consiber going for economics as it mainly talks about markets etc. i am planning to take international business as my option in my under grad.

If you are good in analysing and love to write then Business and Management is right option

If you are good in maths and solving it i feel than you should opt for Economics

Both subject are base on real life issues.

hey got some questions about these 2 subjects so please give me as much feedback as possible would be rlly healpful:

1. How hard are the two subjects at HL? Does it requires lots of studying for an over average student?

2. Is it a good combination of courses? (with my other HL is physics) What potential careers is avaliable?( considering the lowest grade is a 5 for example)

3. Does economics Hl involves writing essays or short answers in the exams,homeworks,projects..?

Thank you in advance

1. I'm currently taking Business HL, and have friends taking Economics HL. I'm sorta an over-average student, and business is a breeze. It's more of common sense. For Economics, they're telling me that B&M is still more fun compared to Economics since you'll be able to apply BNM to your life more.

2. Generally, yes, and take this if you're planning to take a business or management course. (Business administration, etc.)

3. BM is like an EE which has longer word counts compared to Economics that only limits you to 1000 words. :D Everything else depends on your teacher!

Hope this helps!

Hi, i would definitely take business if i was you. in your case if you want to study it in uni it would only make sense. but dont rule econ out. it is a straightforward topic and there are a lot of overlapping concepts with business so it can only help you

Actually most Business schools and University business courses prefer that you don't take Business and Management. That's true for the UK and the US. In fact, Cambridge and LSE include Business as one of their non-preferred subject, in that an A-Level or IB grade in this class would not be considered.

Also, what you study at IB-level is a joke compared to the specialisation at University. Just because you took B&M HL in the IB doesn't mean you will be better off at Uni as a Business Major, not even close. You should disabuse yourself of that notion.

I've been taking Economics and it's a great subject, next year I'll be taking it HL, and yes, it might be a bit hard sometimes, but it's definitely worth it. Not only do most universities prefer it over Business and Management, but you also get plenty of credit if you take Economics HL (that's mostly in the US)

My sister is taking Economics at a university level and she's always telling me how she's studying the same things as I am. So, if you want credit and to be ahead of the rest in college, I recommend Economics HL.

Hey I took bm hl and Eco hl in my IB.. I think Eco will be more useful!! It will make ur base Stronger and sharper! Evn if u do Eco later this base will help u make things clearer! From my experience the more u study Eco the more u understand it!! And with bm it's like if u learn once it's there staring at u!!! So I would go for Eco! Bt if u take both of them it's nothing better!! ;)

They are both very interesting topics. I took them both at the same time as my HL's.

Personally, I preferred economics over business and management because for some reason I liked the idea that these theories and models would relate to real life, even though many of these theories and models had many assumptions to them (ceteris paribus = all else being equal).

As I said, both are interesting topics, taking both would not hurt, as they do not cover the same topics (most of the time).

Perhaps, I would talk to both teachers in your school to see what it's all about first hand if I were you.

Cheers

DK

I dont mean to confuse you but personally i find business and management better. This is because of a various of reasons, business goes through a wide variety of topics that you might come into in university but however not all go into extreme details. The two courses are similar but the economics class is probably more straight forward and a bit harder in my opinion. I stress that you not be influenced and ask your teachers and past students in your school. As i do not know your current situations but it would be wise to ask if the teachers are good and if the school has the resources. It wouldnt be fun doing a subject with a bad teacher. I did economics HL for one term i strongly disliked and i changed to business and management and i found the course more suitable for me because of the what it teaches and how you can really apply this to real life.

Why not just take both? (Sorry if this has already been mentioned. I didn't bother reading all the posts)

I take both B&M and Econ.

Personally, Business is a bloody breeze. Common sense mostly. Economics, well that's much more theory and calculations and application. Economics is also in my opinion much more interesting cause whatever will be learned in class can be related to a million real life situations. So there will always be good debates.
