JMR
What books did you use as sources for examples for your TOK essay? I know that they vary depending on the question, but if I could get somekind of recommendations as I am completely lost on where to start searching from.. KLSmash
You don't have to use books; I didn't. You don't even need to have any sources. You only need to source information you didn't come up with/isn't known internationally. Reply
Sandwich
The TOK essay is one you don't really need to have references for. Unless you want to include a piece of artwork in the appendix or something like that, as you're mostly discussing the nature of things and using examples from your own life/knowledge, there's no need to reference anything. If you quote from somewhere, possibly, but the TOK essay shouldn't require any quotes. Approaching it a bit like the Extended Essay, as a piece of academic research or argument, is not the right way to do it. TOK is all theorising and common sense arguments with personal proofs. Using somebody else's thinking undermines the IB's whole theory of TOK which is that it's apparently meant to help you with your own thinking.I'm sure a quote or two wouldn't harm your essay, but it's not necessary and is potentially the start of the slippery slope to not making your essay personal enough. SharkSpider
The only sources I needed to cite for my essay was my TOK class and my own thought. Realistically, there isn't a topic that can't be completed by simply talking to your peers and instructor, participating in class discussions, and getting some time alone to sit and think.
